About

Four years after forming in a London school, The xx unleashed their 2009 eponymous debut via Young Turks. The 11-track collection not only earned accolades from critics across the globe, but it also scored the U.K.’s coveted Mercury Prize and landed the dream-pop band in the limelight stateside. Singles from their indie-label foray graced American television programs like “Person of Interest” and “90210,” as well as a Karl Lagerfeld runway show and NBC’s coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Along with their own headlining theater tours and concerts alongside Friendly Fires, Hundred Waters and The Big Pink, the musical trio has performed at several festivals, including the Matt Groening-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2010, Coachella, Sasquatch Festival and Lollapalooza, among others.

For their most recent effort, 2012’s “Coexist,” the indie pop outfit expanded their ticket-buying base with post-dubstep EDM influences. Though mellow, these touches can be heard in the album’s first two singles, “Angels” and “Chained.”

Amazing show. We skipped the opening but still thought the xx was worth the full ticket price, despite the short set. Can't wait for them to come up with more songs and return to Boston!

the xx was honest and not "over-done" - such a great evening the crowd was great too! wish the beer lines didn't suck so much though :(

by mammajoe on 10/4/10United Palace Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was really awesome and both opening bands (zolasjesus and war paint) put on a really good show. The XX had cool lights and played really well!

  • short but amazing!!!

The xx played for less than an hour. But while they lasted, it was absolutely amazing. United Palace theatre is a perfect venue for the xx, very beautiful. The xx played all of their songs and encored with Stars which I just love love love so much. The dj mixer was super good. I thought he could've put a spin on Stars though. Infinity was great mixed in with some cool beats. This is their last show for a while so I'm glad I got to catch them!

  • Disappointing and cold

by NoisyPop on 10/4/10United Palace Theatre - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

Overall, a disappointing performance. Although the record sounded new and original, the live concert showed how inexperienced and limited they are. First, the venue was too large for this type of music. Then, the sophisticated lights seemed to have been there only to hide them behind a screen of smoke. They became famous too fast too soon and after that show, it makes me wonder if they haven't already said it all. The Womack & Womack song was fun (they needed that because they don't have enough songs anyway), but it also made me think that you could literally turn any song into an xx version.

Amazing show, sound was terrific, loved the venue!

The venue was amazing visually and sonically, but extremely far from civilization (176th St.). It also only accepted cash, had a no re-entry policy, and no ATM. We arrived as opener #1 Zola Jesus was assaulting the audience with her shrill form of hardcore throaty-Jewel-esque vocalizations that stopped just short of making our ears bleed. Then is was time for the darkly melodramatic musings of Warpaint, who seemed mis-monikered for a coven of irritated, slightly off-key witches with guitars. The XX were brilliant as usual, though it seems possibly suffering from a subtle case of end-of-tour senioritis. Few bands can utilize negative space this effectively to draw you into a live show, but their playing was slow and occasionally sloppy for all of its shimmery luster. In the end, I don't regret seeing this trio I hope will prove to be more than a one-trick pony in subsequent years, but I did find their Central Park Summer Stage show to be more engaging. It is possible, however, that the warm summer air, Asia Dogs and Coors Light had something to do with that perception.

  • Great performance, boring crowds

by Hermione731 on 10/4/10United Palace Theatre - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

The xx is great, the stage effect and the performance are all so unforgettable ! Im not sure if it's the venue or it is because im sitting on the upper lodge, a lot of people are walking in front of me during the xx playing on the stage! So I have to be moving left and right all the time just to have a clear view. I'm especially mad during some of the songs, people just can't stop walking pass me and blocking my view. I'm here to watch the xx, not watching people going to get a beer and go to pee non-stop.Next time if you're watching a band you really love in united palace, don't sit in the upper lodge, balcony and lower level is a better choice.

A brilliant show by a very talented group of artists.

  • by Dunnypop on 10/4/10United Palace Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Though they only have one album (and their set is less than an hour), they over compensated this with a Robyn cover and a great light show.

  • the xx was great~

by kunstlerr on 9/30/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

The xx was a very fun show. I've seen them three times now and I can't ever get enough. The only negative part of the show was the fact that the Chicago theatre was seated. Honestly, the xx is not a band to be sitting to, I've seen them in festival settings and at another venue; they are definately more interactive when in a crowd/pit rather than seats. Check 'em out!
