About

Four years after forming in a London school, The xx unleashed their 2009 eponymous debut via Young Turks. The 11-track collection not only earned accolades from critics across the globe, but it also scored the U.K.’s coveted Mercury Prize and landed the dream-pop band in the limelight stateside. Singles from their indie-label foray graced American television programs like “Person of Interest” and “90210,” as well as a Karl Lagerfeld runway show and NBC’s coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Along with their own headlining theater tours and concerts alongside Friendly Fires, Hundred Waters and The Big Pink, the musical trio has performed at several festivals, including the Matt Groening-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2010, Coachella, Sasquatch Festival and Lollapalooza, among others.

For their most recent effort, 2012’s “Coexist,” the indie pop outfit expanded their ticket-buying base with post-dubstep EDM influences. Though mellow, these touches can be heard in the album’s first two singles, “Angels” and “Chained.”

The xx show at the chicago theatre was amazing. This was my the second time watching them preform on stage, they are such a good band. I would highly recommend going to their concert if they are near

  • The XX - Xtra-ordinary!

    by soccerboi73 on 9/30/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was absolutely the best kept secret of a Show- it was dissappointing to see many Open seats...I think it was not well advertised and perhaps it would of Sold - Out if the show was on Friday or Saturday. The Opening acts were awesome - Zola Jesus and Warpaint...the anticipation of The XX performing blew my mind....I first caught them at Lollapalooza over the summer and I had to go again since it was so packed when they performed. The setlist was beautiful, from the Intro to Encore it was the best show of the Year. Everyone need to check all these bands - I hope they come again soon.

I had never been to the chicago theater and it was great.. my seats sucked but the theatre looked amazing and the sound was unbelievable

  • Awesome show!

The xx was amazing. I do not like "seating" for a venue, more of an up close type of concert-goer but the chicago theater sound is amazing! Overall awesome show!

The Chicago Theatre is a great venue but for rock concerts - it can be tricky. I saw The Arcade Fire here a few years ago and it was great. Definitely works for acts with a more mellow, softer sound where the audience isn't expected to get crazy. The XX sound amazing but I wish the performance varied more in sound from the CD. Only Stars was performed during the encore, which was disappointing.

  • The XX were the bomb bomb!

    by Digster71 on 9/30/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first time seeing The XX live and it was a show to remember. Their airy, almost ethereal, sounds were complimented by a visually stunning light show. The band sounded solid and gracefully transitioned from song to song. I am sorry that I missed them before and will definitely see them again. The only reason I did not give the show five stars was because of the first opening act. Zola Jesus was poorly mixed and difficult to listen to. The set was flat and uninspriring . . . almost boring. The lead singer seems to have a great voice. Too bad it was drowned out by the instruments. Warpaint, the second opening act was much better.

  • the xx gig

Was TOTAL SONIC BLISS! And Zola Jesus was way cool too.

  • Great lights, better music

by Anonymous on 9/30/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The XX has a great album. Their music sounds nearly the same live and the performace is well advanced for three people at age 21. The lights were a great addition to an already-great show.

  • The xx will send chills down your spine!

Although the opening acts weren't as memorable, the show was overall good. However, the audience was out of control. It

  • WARPAINT!!!!

by Llesus on 9/30/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

warpaint was AMAZING!!! i had only one problem though... who why would anyone want to sit down at a show? it takes all the ummmph out of the experience.

  • The XX was XXcellent!

by DependableSkeleton on 9/30/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The XX played every track of their unbelievably awesome debut album, opening with "Intro" and closing with "Infinity" as their encore. They also did their spectacular cover of Womack and Womack's "Teardrops". The stage lighting was right on evoking the subtle differences of each song. I cannot recommend this band or tour highly enough.

  • Zola Jesus and The XX rocked the house!

    by Gothkitty23 on 9/29/10Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

The XX had a surprisingly good show with an amazing light show as a part of their performance as well. The sounds, lights and amazingly powerful songs were such a great experience. They also sang some new songs I hadn't heard yet. Overall a really great, fun experience! They are definitely worth seeing in concert!

I thought the opening acts were okay, but the xx was incredible. Their voices are amazing and Oliver Sim is adorable. (not to mention their accents which are so cute!)

  • decent

    by CMG30 on 9/29/10Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 3 out of 5

nothing special. a lot of swaying and not much other interesting stuff going on on stage. The openers were less than steller and the XX was just good.

  • xx gave a great performance

by DeeDottieDot on 9/28/10Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

xx gave a great performance despite the sound system difficulty. Although it may not have been the best quality sound, which I don't think was their fault, they were able to keep the show going and it was impressive. To keep the range, pitch and overall rhythm of the music relatively similar to how their songs sound on their album is a testament to their skills as both musicians and singers. Considering they are a pretty young group, I'm hopeful that they will produce more wonderful songs and music. Lastly, their supporting acts (Zola Jesus and Warpaint) were pleasant surprises, especially Warpaint. I had to get their album, Exquisite Corpse during the show on my phone. I couldn't help it. Again, xx was fantastic under pressure. I would definitely see them again.

  • XX show - not bad, but just like the CD

by BayXX on 9/28/10Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 3 out of 5

Thought the XX played well, but it sounded just like the CD. Don't think the setlist included anything that wasn't on the CD, not even a cover. Also, the pyrotechnics left something to be desired - think the show could benefit from having more than just the occasional flashing lights. In any case, I think the XX will benefit from becoming a seasoned act on the road, and expect that their next show will be more than a replay of their CD and add more reason to seeing them live.

great great show.. amazing light show, wonderful venue, extremely talented musicians

  • Excellent!

by kbighorse on 9/27/10Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Great to see The xx do their own show, the lighting/effects were a great fit for them. Warpaint was an extremely pleasant surprise, very impressed, especially with the drummer.

  • The XX are impressive but still developing...

    by Mestizo99 on 9/27/10Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 3 out of 5

I'm sorry to say the XX's performance at the Fox did not juxtapose well with their music. Clearly, these are young artists sorting things out. I hope they find their voice, ignore those that steer them away from their vision, and live up to the potential they have revealed in their debut album. I hope they stay true to whatever creative influences helped them find their sound and that they explore and grow along these lines. Given their quick success and broad appeal, this may be very difficult to do, but here's at least one voice encouraging them to be strong!

  • OK, but TOO SHORT!!

by phyreseid on 9/27/10Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 2 out of 5

Really? $35 a ticket, for a 45-minute set consisting of no more than 7 songs? Weak. If I'd know that this would be such a limited session, I'd have stayed at home and listened to the entire album instead of just a couple of songs. It's bad when the most memorable part of a concert is that the travel time (one way) was longer than the headliner's set. I know these guys've been touring for a loooong time, and this might've been their last set, but they owed it to us to actually put on a good show, instead of phoning it in like they did.
