About

Four years after forming in a London school, The xx unleashed their 2009 eponymous debut via Young Turks. The 11-track collection not only earned accolades from critics across the globe, but it also scored the U.K.’s coveted Mercury Prize and landed the dream-pop band in the limelight stateside. Singles from their indie-label foray graced American television programs like “Person of Interest” and “90210,” as well as a Karl Lagerfeld runway show and NBC’s coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Along with their own headlining theater tours and concerts alongside Friendly Fires, Hundred Waters and The Big Pink, the musical trio has performed at several festivals, including the Matt Groening-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2010, Coachella, Sasquatch Festival and Lollapalooza, among others.

For their most recent effort, 2012’s “Coexist,” the indie pop outfit expanded their ticket-buying base with post-dubstep EDM influences. Though mellow, these touches can be heard in the album’s first two singles, “Angels” and “Chained.”

  • Perfection

    by mattiek1022 on 7/25/12The Fonda Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was hands down the best show I've ever experienced. It was perfection. The music, the stage setup, the lighting, the venue, the audience. Everything was on point. I expected the show to be good, but didn't expect the magnitude of how good this show was. It was a life changing experience. I've never felt so spiritually moved at a concert. Can't wait to see them again in October!

  • Hauntingly Beautiful: an Uplifting Sadness

by Trillassshit on 7/25/12The Fonda Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The opening band, Haim, was energetic and excited, and their enthusiasm helped get me excited for the show (as if I needed help). They rocked, and I was glad to get to experience them as I had never heard of them before. We had to wait about 45 minutes between Haim and The XX, but when they came on it was apparent why. The stage and light setup was very involved and became one of my favorite parts of the show. The visual and lights were incredible. It goes without saying that the music was amazing. Romy and Oliver's voices were above and beyond how they sound on the album and the occasional changes in tempo of a song from the album version was cool to hear. They were expressive and emotional, and I felt the intense sadness that many tracks embody more than I ever have when listening to the album and cried once... Jamie's music in the back was on point, but I wish he had spoken or been more of a fixture of the show so that people could better understand what he is really doing back there because its phenomenal. There were some moments that the timing of him hitting the drum pads on his MPC were a little off and that was distracting but as the show progressed he either got more in tune with Romy & Oliver or I stopped noticing inconsistencies. I have listened to every song by The xx countless times and it was great to hear them performed live. The addition of 5 or so new songs was also great and made me amped for the Coexist release!

  • Amazing Show

by JWalkSC on 7/25/12The Fonda Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The xx gave a goosebump-inducing show that was spare, heartfelt and at times very emotional. They played every song off their stellar debut album, while also playing 5 new songs that in some cases were dancier but just as memorable. The lighting and projection matched them perfectly and never distracted from the music. If you like their music, you won't be disappointed. The opening band Haim (made up of three sisters and a drummer) was also quite good and rocked pretty hard. They were a bit of a contrast to The xx, but great in their own right and ended with a four way drum solo.

one of the BEST concerts of the year for me, hands down. amazing ambiance, the lighting was gorgeous and the overall performance gave me chills. if you ever have a chance to see the XX live, DO NOT MISS IT, you wont regret it.

I've been a huge fan of the xx and couldn't wait to see them live. They were even better than their recordings. I was very impressed with the show and would recommend that anyone see the xx if they get the chance.

  • xx=Awesome

by NickFB on 10/5/10Orpheum Theatre - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

In short, The xx were awesome, as usual. I don't think they're quite as good as they are in smaller venues like the Paradise where the performance and setting match the feel of the album, but they were still great to hear. They only have one CD so their set was really, really short. In fact, my friend and I spent more time waiting for them to set up than listening to them. Or at least it seemed that way.

  • surprisingly amazing

    by a6fatty on 10/5/10Orpheum Theatre - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Went to see the xx play at the orpheum, didn't expect too much, since I didnt know the opening acts. From their music videos, the xx wouldn't seem like a great live band, but they did perform well. The performance was pretty good and the two opening acts did great to set up the mood for the xx. Overall great concert, and I wish future success to these three bands.

Great performance, they sound so good live plus the lights were sick!!! Warpaint was also crazy good.

  • The XX | Phenomenal

by SnapXX on 10/5/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

They sound just as good if not better live! Great delivery. Fab light show. Appreciative and interacting with the audience. A m a z i n g they were! The only complaint would be that the Chicago Theatre closes their bars without previous notification or warning before the event is even over :(

  • The XX = Money well spent

by SquintEastwood on 10/5/10United Palace Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

From beginning to end they played everything perfect. I enjoyed the whole setlist, and the vibe set. However the venue was HORRIBLE!!! I wouldn't go there even if someone paid me.

  • The XX were amazing

the XX were amazing, and Zola Jesus was better than I expected. And the 24 oz beers at the Orpheum were very convenient!

  • The XX

One of the best concerts I've ever been... As much as I loooovvveedd the XX before that, I now love them even more. They put on an amazing show. The whole evening was simply breathtaking.

  • Awesome venue

by theCrossGenre on 10/5/10United Palace Theatre - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

The XX was great, but the venue was even better. The band played as expected, but the sound wasn't that good. I can imagine their second tour will have tons of improvements on sound since they have plenty of studio / electronic initiatives. Again, United Palace Theatre is the perfect venue for concerts. Not to big, not too small and beautiful architecture. Best of all, not in a turist or hipster trap!

  • The XX was stunning.

by Nina64 on 10/5/10United Palace Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

They were as incredible live as they are in their recordings. Probably better, and their light show made it an unforgettable and surreal event.

  • XX, 2 XX's, 2 Stars

by IButterTheGnar on 10/5/10Orpheum Theatre - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

My girlfriend and I headed down to the Orpheum to see the XX, which is one of her new favorite bands. I haven't followed them for a particularly long time, but I always enjoy hearing and seeing new bands. positives: they do have a couple really solid, catchy songs and they are a very lyrically sound band(although you can't really understand much of what they're saying, but that's not really a big deal). visually, they had some good lighting effects. the keyboardist/drum machine player Jamie is an extremely sound musician. Romy has an incredible voice. negatives: had to be the shortest sets of any headliner band I've seen in a long time.. show was just over 50 minutes, with a single song encore. At 30 bucks a ticket I expected more. Romy, the female singer needs to fine tune her guitar/rhythm skills. I know they recently kicked out the other guitarist Baria, but she had difficulty at least 10x keeping the rhythm and making mistakes on what are extremely simple riffs. The crowd was also as energetic as the band..none.. while I get that this isn't the type of band that's going to be jumping around the stage, they really had very little energy, which had the entire crowd sitting the whole show until about the last song or two. overall the show was just ok, at no point did I find myself impressed by anything other then some of the strong vocals and drum machine expertise. I wouldn't recommend seeing this band live to anyone, they are a much better studio band. Set was much to short.

  • Amazing!!

    by rk234 on 10/5/10Orpheum Theatre - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

The xx was amazing!!! Not only did they play really well but they also had a light show that went so perfectly with the music. The only bad part of the night was that we had to sit through two opening acts that were mediocre at best.

They were better than expected! My daughter's first concert and it was a great one for her!!
