Easing down the road, with an a few bumps..
by GIBS on 3/5/24Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesFirst of all, the cast is great. As Dorothy, Nichelle Lewis was just terrific. She has a dazzling voice and a sparkling personality. She will turn a lot of heads. In the dual roll of Auntie Em & Evillene, Melody A. Betts was wonderful. Again, terrific voice and great energy, presence and her first line of show (as Auntie Em) brought the house down. Both of these ladies are a treat to see. The rest of the cast was also very good. There are wonderful voices, terrific energy and great spirit. Unfortunately, I think they were let down a bit by the production itself. The choreography was rather bland, particularly when the tornado appears and in “Brand New Day”. The tornado didn’t seem like a threat and “Brand New Day” didn't have the sense of joy one would expect. I think there has also been an addition to the top of Act II, instead of an Entre’ Acte, there is a dance sequence into OZ. It felt reminiscent of the Emerald City Sequence in the Sidney Lumet film, which didn’t work either. It felt unnecessary and lumpy. This is not a criticism of the dancers themselves, they performed the moves they were given. Just wish it had been stronger. Scenic design felt a bit one dimensional. And while costumes for the company overall were good, I felt that the costumes for the trio (Scarecrow, TinMan & Lion) were rather lackluster in comparison. This show is definitely worth seeing, but I think they could make improvements.
