About

The Tony® Award-winning Best Musical that took the world by storm is back. THE WIZ returns "home" to stages across America in an all-new Broadway tour, the first one in 40 years. Baltimore Sun raves "Powerhouse performances. Stunning choreography. Visionary sets" and Chicago Tribune proclaims THE WIZ is "An eye-popping and high-intensity revival! This groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz changed the face of Broadway--from its iconic score packed with soul, gospel, rock, and 70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy's journey to find her place in a contemporary world. With direction by Schele Williams (The Notebook, revival of Disney's Aida), choreography by JaQuel Knight (Beyoncé's "Single Ladies, "Black Is King) and additional material by Tony-nominated and Emmy-nominated writer and TV host Amber Ruffin (The Amber Ruffin Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers), this dynamite infusion of ballet, jazz, and modern pop brings a whole new groove to easing on down the road. Everybody rejoice!

Wonderfully updated production! All the voices were outstanding! Incredible sets!! I haven’t seen a show in years that was so all round well done in every way!! So lucky to have seen the premiere performance enroute to Broadway

  • Nostalgic!

Loved this rendition of the Wiz! There were lots of laughs, energy and familiarity to this modern take on a classic family favorite.

  • Standing Ovation 👏

by LOVE on 9/29/23Rating: 5 out of 5

My whole group of all ages absolutely loved it! Dorothy, Scarecrow we fell in love with, but that is not to say it took any love away from Tinman, Lion, and Evillene…Did I mention I had all of Deborah Cox CD’s in the past and just was tickled pink for her to be our Glenda! They All sang their hearts out! (And danced too!). I actually want the soundtrack (lol)! The colors, the dancers, the stage setup, etc., was top notch! I’m recommending to everyone I come across!

  • The WIZ was electrifying and phenomenal.

by Chris on 9/29/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

The singing, acting, dancing , stage set-up/props and costumes were second to none...Absolutely astonishing..THIS BROADWAY PLAY IS A MUST SEE! Simply amazing! Breath taking and Standing ovation worthy!

  • It was great for what we could see.

by Mimi on 9/28/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

I understand we paid for the cheaper seats off to the side, but only seeing the show was really disappointing. There were 2 big speakers sitting on the side of the stage in front of where we sitting we couldn't see half of what was going on. I just know next time if we go and see a show at this theater. We'll have to try and get better seats.

  • An unprecedented return to splendid!

by Renard on 9/28/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

Anyone who enjoys musical that reverberates every good feeling in your soul must NOT miss this play. I was left with only great praise for their fresh adaptation of the original Broadway success of "The Wiz". The script was hilarious, the costume and scenery were impressive, and the singers... No... I mean the "VOCALISTS"were not from this planet! Each main character and supporting cast member were truly amazing! Their dramatic and comedic deliveries hit every bullseye. And my God, their singing was everlasting to everlasting wonderful. Just in case you can't tell, I enjoyed the play!! Haha...

The Wiz was everything I thought it would be and more. It was pure excellence! The cast was amazing. I can’t wait to see it again in DC and on Broadway. This show brought me so much joy. If I could see it in every state that it goes to I would lol

  • Awesome Experience

by Kay on 9/28/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

I thought the show was absolutely AMAZING! It was funny and modern but it had the storyline that we all know and love. The singing and dancing was second to none. Those voices were incredible. I'd love to see it again.

  • Good Revival But Room for Improvement

by Play Patron on 9/28/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the actress playing Dorothy was great!! Beautiful voice and energy. Tinman was also a real standout. Lion and Scarecrow were good but not great. The Wicked Witch's singing voice could at times be loud and shrill. Good Witch Glenda was spot on. Go back to the iconic ruby red slippers as silver was a let down. And I missled Toto but understand a dog is hard for stage production and a toy dog may be cumbersome. But where I thought the revival was lacking is the staging and set/scenery. Where was the yellow brick road that symbolizes the walk toward dreams? I also felt the sets lacked imagination and wonder. The scene where the Wicked Witch melts was very weak. Seeing them walking through the haunted forest without the moving trees was a disappointment (could have been actors dressed as trees) So overall, a 4 not a 5. But fixable and it should be fixed before Broadway!

The upgraded version of the Wiz was just midrrn enough. The singing was fantastic, the crowd was electric, and the production was excellent. It was a great experience. Lion Calumet School, 1991

  • A MUST SEE!

by MsRayB on 9/28/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

The Wiz was absolutely AMAZING! The cast had you going through emotions. Dorothy will have you in tears with her journey to find herself to Evilene making you rejoice as she takes you to church with No Bad News! The set and costumes were incredible. If you are able to go, I highly suggest you do. You won’t be disappointed!

  • I Didn’t Want the Show to End!

by Tbailey on 9/28/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

This show was great. It’s similar to the TV production with a few spins and updates. I loved Dorothy’s vocals; awesome at such a young age. The Scarecrow was so multitalented; his dance moves were just as great as his vocals. So were Tin Man’s. Then there was the Lion whose singing was to die for and he was such a comedian in a cool sort of way. Lastly the Wiz and Witches made such a lasting impression. I can still see them prancing around on stage belting out their tunes. I give the show a 10 out of 10. All of the characters were awesome!

  • Absolutely Amazing

Absolutely Amazing!! Every dynamic of the show. Can't wait to see it again.

The music, the costumes, the dancing, the set, the actors - all A1! Miss Nichelle - as Dorothy - she is a STAR! I can’t say enough good things!
