About

The Sisters of Mercy on Tour

Formed in Leeds, England in 1980, The Sisters of Mercy is led by the deep baritone of singer and co-founder Andrew Eldritch. Their sound blends goth-rock and post-punk into haunting melodies, dance beats, atmospheric soundscapes, and lyrics that leave a lasting impression. The band achieved global cult status with their distinct self-proclaimed "supercharged industrial psychedelia" sound.

The Sisters of Mercy recorded their first single, "The Damage Done," with Eldrtich on vocals and drums, and co-founder Gary Marx on guitar. Eldritch later replaced himself on drums with a drum machine they named Doktor Avalanche.

They released their first album, First and Last and Always, in 1985. Their second album, Floodland, followed in 1987, with Vision Thing, the third and final full-length album, releasing in 1990 -- peaking at  No. 11 on the UK Albums Chart. Each album hosts a different lineup, with Eldritch's iconic vocals and Doktor Avalanche being the constants. While The Sisters of Mercy have not recorded new material since the '90s, they continue to write new music, also performing it during their live shows.

Known as a band with diverse tastes, The Sisters of Mercy have covered everything from Dolly Parton's "Jolene" to Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and The Stooges' "1969."

In an interview with Australia's AMNplify, Eldritch had this to say about their live performances: "A third of the set consists of all your favorites, a third is unreleased material, and the other third is never even thought of because we are generating a lot of new material with a new guitarist and we're actually writing stuff like crazy."

The Sisters of Mercy Live in Concert

The current version of The Sisters of Mercy are Andrew Eldritch (vocals, keyboards, guitars, drum programming), Ben Christo (guitars, backing vocals, bass) and Dylan Smith (guitars, backing vocals). The band was originally founded by Eldritch and guitarist Gary Marx so that they could hear themselves on the radio. The band takes its name from Robert Altman's film McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), which featured a track from Leonard Cohen's album Songs of Leonard Cohen called "Sisters of Mercy."

Their music has been cited as a major influence by several legendary bands, including Metallica, Nine Inch Nails and My Chemical Romance.

    401 K Tour

More effort could have been made to present a better show!

Great Venue. Great Sound & Lights. Bad Vocals

by Matt on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

When you go to see a show where the band itself is known for the lead singer’s distinctive voice and his mic is turned so far down you can’t make out his voice over the roar of guitars and thump of bass it is really disappointing. Mind you, his band mates were great. They picked up the slack but at times it felt like I was seeing a tribute band and not the real deal. Not a knock on the venue or any other aspects of the show; it was just too bad his voice was shot or the person running the sound board was not up for the job.

    Big disappointment

by carly on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

Sound and lighting were awful -- could barely see anything or anyone on stage and the vocals were horribly muddled. Eldritch's voice is completely shot and one of his two amazing guitarists helped compensate with what was technically backing vocals but mostly lead vocals. I have to think they could do something with the mike to help embellish and project Eldritch's voice -- which is a singularly unique element of the Sisters of Mercy sound. Two stars only because I've loved their music for more than 40 years! Venue itself was run more impressively than any concert venue I've ever been to. Excellent security and staff everywhere to help, extra security/staff to oversee balcony so that only those with tickets could actually sit there. Everything completely on time. Appreciated for a weeknight concert. Don't know if it was the venue or the band responsible for the atrocious lighting and sound though. I'll see when I go to another concert there next month.

What an awful show...what a waste

by Morticia on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

The venue was too Small to hold the capacity of people that they sold tickets for. We were literally on top and shoved in to the room shoulder the shoulder with nowhere to move. The sound was awful it kept reverberating back and the loud screeching was heard throughout the whole night along with the lead singer's microphone. Seemingly not to work for ninety percent of the show. This resulted in a stopping able to hear 90% of the show at all and having the background vocalist over power everything with the screech of their. Guitars and their screaming vocals. Definitely a waste of time, money and overall just a bad experience

    Fun night

by Cg on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

It was my first time seeing TSoM live and it was a nice trip down memory lane. That said there was some disappointment with the sound mix and the fact that Andrew Eldritch's vocals were completely lost or he wasn't even singing at all. The guitarist's vocals were way too loud in the mix and sounded completely out of place. So much of the show seemed suspect to being pre-recorded (no drummer so that part was obvious) but all in all it was a fun evening with friends and songs that were a part of the soundtrack of my life at one time.

I was happy to finally see them

by Vin on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

The energy was great. The new members are great. But I feel like they purposely turned down/off Andrew's mic which was really disappointing. I feel like I got a cover band and not the real SOM. Not really what I was expecting/hoping for.

Eldritch should have hung it up before this tour

by sb10 on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

Wow, what a disappointment! I’m a big fan and I’ve seen the SoM a few times over the last few decades. This show was just…bad. Eldritch’s vocals were completely inaudible. With the backup vocals at a normal level, it sounded like Sisters of Mercy karaoke at best. The guitarists got it together more in the second half, and seemed to try to save the show, but there was no coming back from how much of a sad imitation of the Sisters appeared on that stage. Good for a laugh, but a waste of time and $. I’ve never wanted a refund for a show before, but this was just….bad.

    Venue owes us a refund

by Js on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

The band did their best, despite the fact that the singer’s microphone wasn’t working. The singer is also the reason the fans attended and the original member. We couldn’t hear his vocals at all. So disappointing, especially since I waited many years to see this bucket list band.

    Disappointed

by Page23 on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

Very disappointed—SoM’s sound mix was terrible—no lead vocals in the mix, backing vocals too high. I understand that SoM had their own soundboard & engineer, but I feel like the venue should’ve informed them of how bad the sound was. I mostly feel bad for the band, as they clearly thought it was fine (probably sounded good in their monitors). I did email the venue & thankfully they offered me a ticket for a future show to make up for it.

Lead singer could have sat out the show and not changed it

by JB on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

There was a good mix of recorded and unrecorded songs. Overall it was a pretty fast show, about 90 minutes from open to final encore. Andrew's mic was turned low that i could barely hear him and i was in the first row. There was a steady chorus of "turn up your mic" from the crowd throughout the show. It is more troubling because the guitarist's/back up singer's mic was much louder and would completely drown out Andrew. At one point in the show, Andrew went off stage for two songs and the backup sang instead. I realized then that they could just perform as a 3 piece band with the two guitarists and the keyboardists and there would be a minimal difference to the overall sound. Overall a bit of a letdown considering it was their first us show in 14 years.

    Great Show, with a Caveat

by The Nun on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

I was surprised I was the only one to show up in a Nun outfit. I got pointed out by Andrew so that made the show worth it, as I’d been wanting to see the Sisters since their Floodland Album was released, but never made it to a show. The Fillmore was great, as usual. The bars and bathrooms were super easy to get to. The crowd was polite except the tank of a dude that bulldozed his way in front of a lot of people. Anywho, the opener was cool. I enjoyed them. Okay, the Sisters of Mercy. I enjoyed the show, but Andrews microphone was turned down to the point I couldn’t hear him half of the time. His backup singer, the guitarist that looked like him back in the 80’s, was able to pic up the backing lyrics, so that was cool. Overall I had a great time, it was worth it - better sound check next time.

    Eh.....

by Brian on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

There were pretty serious sound issues that never got cleared up or addressed. Many of us could not hear the lead vocals after about the second or third song and people were literally screaming about it from the back pretty loudly. It was very disappointing.

    Bad mic?

by Scott on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

Andrew was difficult to hear- think they had some mic/balancing problems, other than that was a good show.

    Sound was terrible

by BobOz on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

The show was underwhelming. The lead singers could hardly be heard throughout the show. The vocal mixing had the back up singers vocals on 11 & the lead singers on 2. I often could not even hear the vocals. The only song I heard the lead vocals was the acoustic song. The overall sound of the show was off.

    Sisters of Mercy tribute band

by Stratos on 5/13/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

Was this a conscious decision? Was it a mess up of the sound person? I don’t know, but what I do know is that you could not hear the main vocals at all. When I say at all, I literally mean it was as if the mic was not connected. You could hear the backing vocals, loud and clear, and that gave a semblance of a concert, but it was not, a good show. I have never given a concert a poor review until today, and this is well deserved. Absolutely terrible.
