About

The Sisters of Mercy on Tour

Formed in Leeds, England in 1980, The Sisters of Mercy is led by the deep baritone of singer and co-founder Andrew Eldritch. Their sound blends goth-rock and post-punk into haunting melodies, dance beats, atmospheric soundscapes, and lyrics that leave a lasting impression. The band achieved global cult status with their distinct self-proclaimed "supercharged industrial psychedelia" sound.

The Sisters of Mercy recorded their first single, "The Damage Done," with Eldrtich on vocals and drums, and co-founder Gary Marx on guitar. Eldritch later replaced himself on drums with a drum machine they named Doktor Avalanche.

They released their first album, First and Last and Always, in 1985. Their second album, Floodland, followed in 1987, with Vision Thing, the third and final full-length album, releasing in 1990 -- peaking at  No. 11 on the UK Albums Chart. Each album hosts a different lineup, with Eldritch's iconic vocals and Doktor Avalanche being the constants. While The Sisters of Mercy have not recorded new material since the '90s, they continue to write new music, also performing it during their live shows.

Known as a band with diverse tastes, The Sisters of Mercy have covered everything from Dolly Parton's "Jolene" to Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and The Stooges' "1969."

In an interview with Australia's AMNplify, Eldritch had this to say about their live performances: "A third of the set consists of all your favorites, a third is unreleased material, and the other third is never even thought of because we are generating a lot of new material with a new guitarist and we're actually writing stuff like crazy."

The Sisters of Mercy Live in Concert

The current version of The Sisters of Mercy are Andrew Eldritch (vocals, keyboards, guitars, drum programming), Ben Christo (guitars, backing vocals, bass) and Dylan Smith (guitars, backing vocals). The band was originally founded by Eldritch and guitarist Gary Marx so that they could hear themselves on the radio. The band takes its name from Robert Altman's film McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), which featured a track from Leonard Cohen's album Songs of Leonard Cohen called "Sisters of Mercy."

Their music has been cited as a major influence by several legendary bands, including Metallica, Nine Inch Nails and My Chemical Romance.

    Fantastic

Sisters of Mercy are goth gods and they lived up to every expectation I had. The venue is always great. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The Sisters of Mercy meet the concrete

by Lakegod on 6/8/23The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

I go to between 10-15 concerts a year. Entirely in the alternative vein. The SOM concert rates at the bottom of the totem pole. The mix was so bad that you could not hear the vocals. The lights were set up at eye level and blinded you the entire show. You could not see the players at all. They might as well been behind a curtain. Everybody in my entourage was extremely disappointed. We saw Love & Rockets two nights later at the Royal Oak music theatre and they were STELLAR. They blew SOM AWAY.

    Good, not great

by Pstambau on 6/8/23The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

Singer was spending too much time in back, poor performer lighting. I guess typical for album bands that really are not a live performance artist.

Couldn't hear Andrew's voice at all!! I waited 15 years??!!

by DJDDay on 6/8/23The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

Sadly, Andrew's vocals were almost impossible to hear 90% of the time, and often you'd see him sing into the mic but there would be no sound at all. That said, the band sounded tight - they did great (although the guitarists will never match the brilliance of Wayne Hussey, as most of the older material sounded really bad aka "Marion", etc). But again, the worst part was that Andrew's vocals were practically non-existent, and let's be real - his voice makes up well over 85% of the Sisters of Mercy's sound. Dude has had almost 40 years to figure out how to mic his vocals for a live performance, so this was very disappointing. Seems to be a theme with them, so... do with that info as you will. Also, the versions of "This Corrosion" and "Dominion" just sound "off" without a choir. Samplers are cheap these days, so not sure why the choirs were omitted.

    Kick Ass Concert

by KDrew on 6/8/23The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

We sat at one of the mezzanine tables for the SOM concert and it's got to be one of the best seats in the house. Not alot of people on the mezzanine and there is always a short line at the bar. Nobody standing in front of us so we were able to enjoy the concert seated. SOM is one of my favorite 80's bands and I never miss when they come to town..!

    Sisters of Mercy in Detroit

What an awesome experience. The band was fantastic and the Fillmore in Detroit is one of the best places to see a concert. An incredible time was had by all.

    Lord Have Mercy

by ODG on 6/8/23The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

I have loved the Sister of Mercy since the early 1980's and have seen their shows when they tour and try not to miss them. This show was the worst concert I've seen in a long time. The flashing lights were utterly annoying and could give anyone the worst seizure or migraine. It reminded me of a light show you could buy online. The same thing over and over. Now Andrew's voice was fine but the sound engineering was terribly lacking. Overall it was a major disappointment. It will probably be my last time seeing them. Some things get better with age like wine but in this case it was just sour grapes.

    The Sisters

by Chaz on 6/7/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Everything about the show embody the sisters of Mercy. The venue was a perfect place to see the group. The vocals were spot on put the sound was a little off. Otherwise, the show was amazing. My seats were great and I definitely recommend the Fillmore to anyone.

    Pleasantly surprised

    by R. L. on 6/7/23

After reading the negative reviews I actually thought about not going. Glad I did!! The venue was awesome, the warm up band killed it, and the sisters delivered. They all sounded awesome. And they play their set in a very workmanlike matter and leave. I like that.

    High Expectations, Only Decent Performance

    by J. G. on 6/7/23

I had high expectations seeing Sisters again after last seeing Eldritch and whoever he pulls to perform with him 15 years ago. To be honest, I'd say it was worth seeing the show, but against missing a Love and Rockets show the same night here in Chicago, I think the Love and Rockets attendees probably have more of a high after their show than we do who attended Sisters of Mercy. It just didn't seem like anyone on stage had enough hutzpah to carry an energetic show. And I'm sorry, age isn't an excuse. I just saw Janet Jackson twice on her Together Again tour deliver STELLAR performances. I've seen Madonna since turning 60 deliver an excellent show. I saw Cher at 72 kill it. Andrew Eldritch... let's be real, doesn't really like his fans. He never has. And that is obvious. Also, no live bass for "Lucretia My Reflection"? Huh? So yeah, if Sisters is touring your city, I'd definitely say go. But, against a better show like we had here in Chicago, maybe pick the alternative.

    Blinded by the Light

by JMB on 6/7/23The Pageant - St Louis

By now everyone knows the terrible sound issues that Sisters of Mercy has had on this tour due to Eldritch singing low but not being able to project loudly enough into his mic that it picks up other sounds and gives feedback. But the other (worse) issue we experienced at this show was the lighting. We sat in the center balcony of the Pageant and the floor lights on stage were pointed directly at our section instead of above us. Synced with the drums, these lights flashed constantly at us. My husband who has a vision impairment was quite literally blinded like a flash bang. We had to leave our seats that we paid more than GA for and go sit in accessible seating with an obstructed view of the stage. It didn't matter much for him though because he had to keep his eyes closed the rest of the concert for his vision to return. What a horrible thing to do to your fans who paid extra for a good view of the band.

    Awesome

by MI🖤Me on 6/7/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

I’m grateful that was able to attend this show. I love The Filmore, it’s lovely! To see and hear one of my favorite bands from my teen and young adult years made me so happy!!! The only thing I noticed and without trying was the sound was off for when The Sisters of Mercy were performing. Meaning the sound engineer was off. I could even tell the band knew it. Anyway, I still had an amazing time. I’ll be back this Saturday 🖤

    SOM Palladium

by Audie on 6/7/23Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

This was my first time seeing The Sisters of Mercy. I was so excited to hear they were touring and excited to get tickets in Hollywood. The Palladium is a venue I haven't been to in many years, and I thought it was a great venue for this concert. Overall, I enjoyed the show; however, the sound mixing or whatever the technical term is left something to be desired as you could barely here the vocals. My friend had the same experience when she saw them a few days earlier in Maryland.

The Sisters come back for a visit

by Brian O on 6/6/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

The Sisters of Mercy do not tour the US very often - so when they do... you make sure you go. We were not disappointed in any way. Eldritch growled through the songs(old and new) while the two axemen showed off... and boy did they show off! A great night - I will go see them again when (if?)they return in the future!!

    Fillmore & Sisters

by Ionic on 6/6/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Standing room only concert, a bit hard on the feet, but I'm old. Sisters sounded in form and was glad to have them back in Philly! It has been too long between shows ( 19 years ) Venue was good and was pleasantly surprised how good the venue was. It was my first time there ( I would have been there earlier but Morrissey canceled date at Venue ) All in all had a great time.

    Pretty damn good

    by Ruby75 on 6/6/23Kings Theatre - Brooklyn

Haven’t seen TSoM since 2004 so it was really cool seeing one of my fave bands again. Kings Theater is a beautiful venue in Brooklyn. Great staff who were very helpful and super nice. My seats were great. The band was in top form and sounded amazing. Andrew Eldritch’s voice is not what it used to be sadly. The guitarist took over most of the vocal duties. All in all a great show. All the faves were played. Was it 1985 SoM? No, but I wouldn’t hesitate to see this version of the Sisters again.

The Sisters rock from begining to end!

by Chris B. on 6/6/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Andrew Eldritch still has it. He drips charisma and sounds fantastic. His current band members are great as well. The songs were back to back with very little talking or breaks. It is not often that you see a band keep that pace for 20 songs. The venue was great. Sold out show! The opener was good, too. This concert is one of the best of all time.

Good to see them; sound lacking

by Gorey on 6/6/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

This wasn’t my first Sisters Of Mercy show, so I know the live show rarely mirrors the recorded works. However, the sound mix was off for the band. The opening act had a fine mix but Sister’ wasn’t great. Andrew’s voice was buried in the music and the guitarist’s backing vocals (much louder). Also many songs were played at a faster-than-original speed, which really changed the vibe. I was not disappointed or surprised, but felt it lacked signature Sisters sound. I must note that the sound improved slightly when I moved from the center of the floor to the back, but was surrounded by people talking about how hard it was to hear the lead vocals. All that said, loved the Fillmore and seeing Mr. Eldritch.

    What a miserable venue

by MS on 6/6/23Big Night Live - Boston

Sisters were fine. Andrew doesn't sound great, but given age and experience, it's about what I expected. Big Night Live, however, is AWFUL. Sound was muddy, sightlines are poor, and access to the bathrooms is a mess. Bar is overpriced, and the "1 drink" policy is stupid - if I go to a venue with someone, then both of us have to fight the crowds to get a drink? Bah. And to be a new venue, stuff is in pretty poor repair. Several bathroom doors were broken, and the couch areas looked ragged. Overall, gross.
