About

Three-time Grammy Award winning hip hop legends The Roots have released ten albums and recorded with some of the biggest names in the music business. Their influence reaches far beyond the hip-hop world, though, as their recent collaborative tour with old-school post-punk rocker, Elvis Costello, proved. While their recordings continue to earn praise and awards, it’s in concert that The Roots really display their chops. Ticket holders to one of their shows are treated to a lesson in hip-hop that shows off the genre’s history and scope, with elements of jazz, rap, funk and even metal. There’s a reason The Roots are often called the best live act in hip-hop, and Rolling Stone magazine goes one better, calling the band one of the 20 greatest live acts in the world.

The Philadelphia-based band formed in 1987 and were mostly an underground act, playing local clubs and small venues. Their first album, "Organix," was recorded to sell at live shows. Though they were not very well-known when they joined the 1994 Lollapalooza tour, the crowd response was huge, and The Roots have been gaining momentum ever since. The group’s third album, "Things Fall Apart," was their breakthrough album, reaching the Billboard Top 10 and ultimately going platinum. The Roots are best known to TV viewers as the house band for Jimmy Fallon’s late-night show, but they still find time for what they do best: live concerts. The Roots continue to stay true to their literal roots.

    Intimate Atmosphere

    by Irene on 8/31/21

The Wellmont provided a fan to be super close to the band. The sound was good, bathrooms were upstairs but that was okay, and 2 bars. Great price for an amazing show.

    Not their best work

by Khood9 on 8/31/21The Wellmont Theater - Montclair

Been a big fan of the roots and have been to many shows in the past. This was my first show at the Wellmont. The audio was terrible I could not make out amulet of the words that were being said by the opener or the roots. The venue is nice small and cozy but the audio was a big problem.

    Roots continue to impress

by A from NJ on 8/31/21The Wellmont Theater - Montclair

The Roots were amazing as usual. The sound system at the Wellmont needs to be improved; not enough clarity.

    Legendary Show

by MzMellie on 8/31/21Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

The Roots never fail to provide the audience with a high energy, memorable, and excellent performance. The set contained popular favorites by the hip hop band and paid homage to a few of dearly beloved rappers that have transitioned. My favorite part of the show was every part.

    Straight Bliss

by JT on 8/30/21Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

When I bought outlets tickets, I expected the balcony front row to be a decent and safe seat since were still in a pandemic. What I didn’t realize was that ticket included access to the Lexus Lounge. This allowed us to relax in a socially distanced atmosphere with few people while waiting fir the show and in between sets. It was the best way to get back into the concert scene. The Roots were SPECTACULAR! I loved every minute of it. They were well worth the wait. I can’t wait to see them live again.

This is the second time I have witness the greatness of The Roots. First being the Game Theory era here in Baltimore with Lupe Fiasco and Little Brother. Just an awesome live show and so much energy from the stage to the crowd!

needed a taste of art and culture

by A moment in covid-19 time on 8/20/21BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival at Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

I was a solid pleasure seeing the ROOTS perform live hearing organized noise with bars and melodies was a pleasure to ears that have been drowned with covid-19 fake news and propaganda the city is dying from culture shock and this was a well need remedy without taking a deadly shot in the arm. Bravo ROOTS band!

    AMAZING

by CSmilez on 8/16/21BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival at Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

The Roots, like always, put on an amazing live performance. They are a legendary band, jam band, hip hop group, and overall super talented. They kept the crowd going and played their hits, deep tracks, and paid homage to some of the recently deceased legends of hip hop such as Biz Markie. The Roots are the best band in history, FULL STOP.

You are now rocking with the best!

by al_m3dina on 8/16/21BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival at Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

The roots never, ever disappoint! I don't know what else to say about their performance except that if you have never seen them live, do it soon. The sound at BRIC was excellent and big screens and camera work were as well. You can't/won't miss anything at this venue no matter where you are. My only complaint: My $14 drink was watered down! All the way down. But, the burger was great.

This was the first time I had ever visited the Lena Horne Bandshell and the first time I've ever seen The Roots live! It was an amazing experience, with a great opening by Felicia Temple. The music was fire, the energy was explosive, and everyone walked away feeling elevated!
