About

Three-time Grammy Award winning hip hop legends The Roots have released ten albums and recorded with some of the biggest names in the music business. Their influence reaches far beyond the hip-hop world, though, as their recent collaborative tour with old-school post-punk rocker, Elvis Costello, proved. While their recordings continue to earn praise and awards, it’s in concert that The Roots really display their chops. Ticket holders to one of their shows are treated to a lesson in hip-hop that shows off the genre’s history and scope, with elements of jazz, rap, funk and even metal. There’s a reason The Roots are often called the best live act in hip-hop, and Rolling Stone magazine goes one better, calling the band one of the 20 greatest live acts in the world.

The Philadelphia-based band formed in 1987 and were mostly an underground act, playing local clubs and small venues. Their first album, "Organix," was recorded to sell at live shows. Though they were not very well-known when they joined the 1994 Lollapalooza tour, the crowd response was huge, and The Roots have been gaining momentum ever since. The group’s third album, "Things Fall Apart," was their breakthrough album, reaching the Billboard Top 10 and ultimately going platinum. The Roots are best known to TV viewers as the house band for Jimmy Fallon’s late-night show, but they still find time for what they do best: live concerts. The Roots continue to stay true to their literal roots.

by nomodrinks on 7/4/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

The tubba player reminded me of halftime at football games at college. The roots always, alwys put on a show their ability to play convert classic hip hop into jazz, regga, swing and rock and roll is always impressive. Hip hop is always about expanding and the Roots truely expand when they create an album and bring their unique vibe and original style to the fans live it is alwys memorable.

Classic Roots show at 1st Avenue

by MysterioSinister on 7/3/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

1st Avenue was packed - and the Roots delivered for just under 2 hours. This was a more rock-oriented sound that previous Roots shows I have seen, with a bit more up-tempo renditions of some classics, but the crowd loved it. At this point Black Thought, ?estlove and the rest of the crew have and these sorts of shows down to a science.

I've never seen a band having so much fun on stage. I loved how the band switched between their own music and rock/ hip hop classics. It was amazing.

The Roots always know how to put on a show. They have the crowd up and moving from beginning to end. The Roots are true entertainers!! These other hip hop artists should catch one of their shows and take notes.

Great Band and A Great Show

by Terri on 7/2/09House of Blues Cleveland - Cleveland

The musicians are top of the line, the music and instrumentation is completely original, really good crowd, and a cool venue too. overall an incredible show especially if you're into music. the bands itself is amazing and transcends beyond the traditional realms of hip-hop with an interesting mix of covers (along with their originals of course!) and an extremely talented band.

Never a dull moment with The Roots

by James on 7/2/09House of Blues Cleveland - Cleveland

The Roots really know how to put on a show. The music was great, and they kept things exciting, everything from individual jams to the occasional cover of a classic rock song. They were all really into it. I recommend that everyone see them live at least once, I was blown away. I'll go see them again the next chance I get !!

    "rotten" Roots

by stretch on 7/1/09House of Blues Cleveland - Cleveland

I've seen the Roots before, and have never been this upset by a show. I was super excited to see them, and ended up leaving super upset. If I wanted to go see a cover band I would have. Four of the bands set were cover songs such as Knight Rider, Jungle Boogie and Sweet Child O' Mine. The only great part of the night was the kick-ass drum solo between questlove and the percussionist.
