About

Three-time Grammy Award winning hip hop legends The Roots have released ten albums and recorded with some of the biggest names in the music business. Their influence reaches far beyond the hip-hop world, though, as their recent collaborative tour with old-school post-punk rocker, Elvis Costello, proved. While their recordings continue to earn praise and awards, it’s in concert that The Roots really display their chops. Ticket holders to one of their shows are treated to a lesson in hip-hop that shows off the genre’s history and scope, with elements of jazz, rap, funk and even metal. There’s a reason The Roots are often called the best live act in hip-hop, and Rolling Stone magazine goes one better, calling the band one of the 20 greatest live acts in the world.

The Philadelphia-based band formed in 1987 and were mostly an underground act, playing local clubs and small venues. Their first album, "Organix," was recorded to sell at live shows. Though they were not very well-known when they joined the 1994 Lollapalooza tour, the crowd response was huge, and The Roots have been gaining momentum ever since. The group’s third album, "Things Fall Apart," was their breakthrough album, reaching the Billboard Top 10 and ultimately going platinum. The Roots are best known to TV viewers as the house band for Jimmy Fallon’s late-night show, but they still find time for what they do best: live concerts. The Roots continue to stay true to their literal roots.

    The Roots

    by T Money on 10/31/23

I was able to see The Roots live at the AE sound stage in Pittsburgh, PA in October 2022. Hand down THE BEST concert I've been too, rain and all. Please come back this way!

    PHENOMENAL

    by ChristineW on 8/9/23

The Roots with the full horn section were fantastic! The concert had great flow and time flew by. Original music and covers all streamed together for non stop entertainment. Great venue also!

    Nothing Short Of Amazing.

    by Mark Seven on 8/1/23

My 2nd time seeing The Roots and it was just as amazing, if not more, than last time. Really glad that it was here in Harrisburg, PA and I didn't have to drive 2 hours to see them. Black Thought is not human! Truly one of the GOATs and the group as a whole are the GOATs too. My only gripe is with the local organization that put the show together: No DJs or local Hip Hop artists opened the show. The only opener was a live band and they were good but c'mon.. We need more support for our local Hip Hop artists and DJs in which we have a plethora of. Don't just play random music from a playlist off someone's computer or wherever it came from.

    Amazing Wonderful Exciting

by Chrissy P on 3/21/23The Salt Shed - Chicago

The Roots are fantastic artist and performers. I’m not sure how much more can be said. Their sound is on point, they have a great stage presence. I loved that the guitarist, bassist, and tuba player had some choreographed dance routines and helped hype up the crowd. It was a great time seeing them.

    Could not park anywhere

by L no park on 3/6/23The Masonic - San Francisco

Not a review of the Roots, I’ve seen them before and they’re great, but the venue had no parking anywhere, all garages were full anywhere near by and the rest was permit parking. A venue should have parking available.

    Amazingly talented band

by Diesel on 3/4/23The Masonic - San Francisco

Love the venue, hated the parking expereince, but The Roots made it all worth it. Such an amazingly talented band. From playing their hits from the past two decades, to incorporating hits from other hip hop artist like Main Source, to highlighting the talent of each of their musicians, it was all on point. Would gladly see them again in a minute.

    The best

by Marine on 2/26/23The Masonic - San Francisco

From the moment they got on stage until the end of the concert the musicians and the singer gave 200% of themselves. Their energy is massive. And then…once the concert ended they would not leave the stage … they were shaking hands with the public and playing with the audience. Most human warm generous experience EVER at a concert .Thank you.

Great entertainment but venue has issues.

by Clt on 7/18/22Riverfront Park - Harrisburg

No lawn chairs, no blankets, no water bottles... Not even refillable ones. Not the most welcoming situation. Only a few lines for beer... Stood in line for 45 minutes. Then found out that my friend couldn't get water there. She had to wait in another line to get it. If not for the quality of the entertainment... I would knock that score down more. $50+ a ticket to stand in line with no drinks $11 a pop for a beer) then stand for the show while people sat along the outside perimeter with their free drinks and no tickets. I won't fall for that again.
