Lineup was amazingly selected with variety. Venue size was great! Needed more food vendors to avoid long lines. Sounds system must improve. Mics and volume effected every artist.
Set times over 2hrs behind Horrible sound quality 1-2 wait for food-not enough vendors Line up changed last minute-no notification. Long waits in between sets DJ played the same playlist all weekend
First time attending in decades; disappointed at lack of vendors inside the concert/venue and poor audio/visual which significantly delayed a number of acts from performing.
The overall vibe was amazing. The sound, video and logistics need major improvements.
Mary shut ish down reppin NY well. Rakim & Jazzy Jeff are a great pairing of 2 distinct talents! RAKIM IS A FAVE OF MINE 2ND TIME THIS YEAR. Jazzmine Sullivan looked fantastic as did Mary also! đ Unfortunately, Jazzmine's mike was faulty during her entire set so we had to use our imagination & memory to enjoy her lyrics. What a shame. Rick Ross was loud and clear and the pandemonium was clear too! Black Thought & Questlove are geniuses to put together this whole Roots Picnic concept. Needless to say, their performances were exceptional đ đ also. There was a newer artist Mu mu that was dope and original evoking Erykah Badu, yet with her own distinct style too. The food trucks, vendors were great. Security was professional and efficient & the few times medics were needed, they were quick to respond and allowed the show to go uninterrupted
This was my first year going to a summer festival, and I enjoyed every moment of it. It was nothing less than what I expected and hopefully Iâm able to return again next year.
The bad first- not sure who conducted sound check but they should definitely get more hours of training because there were constant issues with the microphones. I heard the background music too loud and not the singer enough... both days! This was the mainstage. The pavilion acoustics were a bit better but at times was the same issue. That was really the only downside of the actual show. Another negative was the food. The food behind the main stage was not good at all. Why can't we have good food at every stage?! The wait time was also terribly long- over an hour just for nasty chicken nuggets. The good- there was plenty!! This venue is sooooooooo much better than Columbus Blvd. years prior. Love all the trees/shade, multiple stages, lots of space to walk around and move around. Close to west philly neighborhoods for parking. The ease of buying tickets and checking in was smooth and flowed really well. The lineup of performers was awesome. HATED that some people didn't perform and were replaced but LOVED the folks who were added last minute. Overall, everyone was peaceful and singing along. It was really fun!
This event should have been one day. The Toyota Main Stage sound system was terrible . Plant some grass out there so folks wonât have to sit on the dirt. She was 2 1/2 hours behind and the lines for food was insane. Need more vendors. Very disappointed because 2019 was so much fun .
As always the Roots Picnic has a phenomenal line-up for the weekend. My 1st issue is that nothing was on time during both days and the apps did not provide the correct timing information at all. This made it a bit tricky to move from stage to stage depending on who you actually wanted to see. The vendors were great as well as the food options. My other issue would be the amount of weed smoking that took place. Fairmount Park is supposed to be a smoke-free environment but the weed smoke was everywhere and you could not escape it. So much so that it made it difficult to enjoy the shows because people were constantly blowing smoke at you. For people who are allergic or don't want to get high, this presents an issue. All in all it was a good music festival.
It appeared that some of the artist did not respect our time. Who shows up an hour late? Both stages were behind both days. This was my 1st Roots Picnic experience and I am not sure if I would attend another one.
Iâm a native Philadelphian who lives in Atlanta, GA. Last year, I attended One MusicFest in Atlanta. Similar concept as The Roots Picnic. I was very excited when I saw the line up for this years festival. However, the execution left a lot to be desired. The hours long delays in performers to take the stage and the long lines for food and beverages were ridiculous.
Went with a group of 6 ladies. It was our first time in Philly. 60k people and nothing but love in the air. Dear Roots, keep putting on for your city!! We will be back. 10/10 Highly recommend.
I'll preface this review by saying that I've attended prior Roots picnics and am familiar with their setup and most of this review is compared to those prior events. 1- Parking this year was very limited due to the number of people this year and it was far from the entrance. I've never had a problem with parking in prior years and nor was the walk to the entrance that far. 2- I understand why they had porta-potties this year versus prior years where they had regular bathrooms but I didn't understand why a) there were no wash/sanitary stations (COVID and other diseases and there is food being served) b) they were not cleaned, refreshed, and toilet paper refills throughout the day c) there was no lighting near the porta-potties so once dark, you were on your own. 3- The food options were extremely limited. There were almost no options for vegetarians/vegans and had to search out each food truck to find something. That would be fine if allowed to bring in food. 4- The lines for food or other options were ridiculously long, 1-1.5 hours wait. 5- Food ran out quickly and the wait for refills of food items was 20-30 mins adding to your wait to order. Many times you had already paid and then told they were out of what you ordered. Getting a refund was too complex and as long as waiting for the refill of that item. 6- The food was extremely overpriced, even for a concert event. 7- Performances were greatly delayed. The time between acts was as much as 1 hour, pushing the start time of each act out 2 hours on average. Even after having issues on Day 1, this should have been fixed for Day 2. Don't remember having this issue in prior years. 8- They randomly added nobody acts in between when we were already delayed for the main performances in the evening on the second day, a Sunday, before a work day. 9- They also switched the last two acts. The closing act was then forced to shorten their performance so they could end at midnight. Most people had to leave, especially when both acts were scheduled to end around 10 pm. 10- Technical issues and sound during the performances were not very good in many cases. 11- Overpriced for the quality and outcomes for this year. In prior years they have had more acts in 1 day without all the issues listed. Overall, there were probably way too many people and poor planning. They have done this event annually so not sure where the breakdown was this year.
This year wasnât bad. It wasnât a stampede, which happened the last time i went. The lines for concessions and drinks were so long, it took 3 hours to get a cocktail the first day of the festival. The run times were all wayyy off. Nobody came out when they were supposed to. So unfortunately, i wasnât able to have the full experience as i was coming from out of town and the Sunday line-up was hours behind schedule. The couple things i would change is, add more stands, specifically for water. For Sunday schedule, people traveled far so to have the acts come on at a reasonable time would be great. It feels like I missed more than half of the experience having to leave early on Sunday. Other than that, the festival was amazing. I had a great time and will return again next year.
I felt safe and the crown was matured and laid back. They were giving away free water which was a plus for the heat and after other atrocities at outdoor festivals. So glad Roots came back to Philly!
The artists were great. Some artists mics weren't turned up enough though. The videographer was horrible. We couldn't see the entire stage on the big screens because the camera man continuously zoomed in too close. The lines were too long, next time there should be a scan pay like a bracelet to make it easier to pay. Other than that it was nice.
I love the line up. Just wished one stage at a time so can fully enjoy each artist.
Pros: clean bathrooms, clean water area, great line up of artist, the DJ party section was fun in between shows, responsive medical and security team, great crowd control for entrance and exit to event Con: 2-3hr delays for performances, horrible sound quality with mics not working for multiple sets, need more vendors (45-60min wait for drinks and food), consider handing out water to people camping out in front of stage especially with delays
I really enjoyed my first ever festival experience here at roots picnic the only thing I really didnât like is the way the bathroom situation was set up throughout the weekend it was not very clean in the upstairs section but the food was really great it was organized as best as it could on the artist did come out pretty late but I didnât mind that I wish there were more activities that were not up on the hill
Overall we had a good time. Here are a few things that can be improved. 1. If you weren't very close to the stage you could not hear Jazmine Sullivan on Saturday night. 2. The schedule was so far off we left at 11PM when Mary should have come on around 9PM. Can't stay in the sun all day AND all night. 3. We opted to Uber instead of drive this year which was the wrong move. It took over an hour to get a car and we ended up walking very far from the park.
