About

These classically-trained musicians have definitely found their groove, and it lies somewhere in between rock and Rachmaninoff. Jon Schmidt (piano), Steven Sharp Nelson (cello) Paul Anderson (production, videography) and Al Van Der Beek (production, songwriting), a.k.a. The Piano Guys, are more than just a musical act, they are a multi-media production team. Through innovative musical composition, cutting-edge technology, and a dash of humor, The Piano Guys produce entertaining videos (oftentimes shot in breathtaking locales) of themselves performing their own rendition of popular songs, classical compositions, movie soundtracks and more—at times enlisting the help of talented guest vocalists. With YouTube as their portal, their videos have received hundreds of millions of views—pretty impressive for a fun-loving crew whose original intent was merely to showcase the instruments for sale at Anderson’s small piano shop. Initially shocked by their overwhelming success, they’re now making the most of their time in the spotlight by embarking on a mission to “make a positive impact in the lives of people all over the world.”  Among their most widely viewed videos is “Cello Wars (Star Wars Parody) Lightsaber Duel,” “Beethoven’s 5 Secrets,” and their covers of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” and Coldplay’s “Paradise.”  When The Piano Guys announced that a LIVE concert tour was in the works, eager fans anticipated the chance to buy tickets to what promises to be a stunning onstage spectacle of sight and sound.

    The Piano Guys were tremendous!!!

by K8A8 on 6/30/14City National Civic - San Jose

I really enjoyed The Piano Guys! They are as talented in person as in their YouTube videos but there was also humor, warmth and realistic humanity. I highly recommend taking children, especially those who are interested in learning to play musical instruments. Definitely a family friendly show but enjoyable and interesting to all!

This was a suprise date from my husband, who knows how much I enjoy their music. We are both founders, so the night was very special as they played music from the past years and shared stories! They both have a great sense of humor and the night flew by!

The Piano Guys gave an incredible performance in person! My sister and I discovered them when they first began putting Youtube videos up and it was superb to see them in person and finally recognized for their amazing talent. I'm so excited to see where they go next and can't wait to keep following their amazing journey! :)

    Simply Amazing!!!

by MLCielo on 6/29/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I have been on a lot of concerts lately but this is by far the best I have ever been into. Probably it is just me since I like classical music as well. I have been fully satisfied with the performance and I wished they played for a couple more hours! I will definitely watch them when they come back here in LA.

    Blown away

by Taxaschck on 6/28/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I was expecting 4 guys plucking/pounding on the piano, but the world's greatest cello player joined "Magic 10 Fingers" on the piano. However, I wasn't disappointed with the encore where they played what I expected with 3 guys (videographer was missing due to a injured back)

A high energy, fun and engaging musical experience

by James360 on 6/28/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

The Piano Guys were successful in providing a high energy, fun and engaging musical experience! So much personality and talent mixed with down home warmth and a heavy dose of 'goofy-moment' induced laughter. These guys made you want to learn the piano, cello, see the seven wonders of the world, dance with seniors, become Mormon and their BFFs! They give a great concert because they give genuinely and generously of themselves. What a treat, a delight, and a testament to the human experience shared through music and two human beings being authentically human.

Piano Guys was good, but something was missing...

by Lauramom on 6/28/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

A couple very talented musicians! But what I had hoped for was a bit more. I was hooked on seeing this group after watching YouTube videos, so I expected to see a foursome doing amazing things with an open piano. Instead, we were treated to two very talented musicians who played their hearts out on piano and cello, while engaging in some funny (but rather stale) banter. So much more could have been done technically to improve the show. I hope that if they continue to tour, they will add the use of close-up camera work that can be shown on the big screens. While an explanation was offered for the omission of the 3rd and 4th players, it didn't come until just before the encore, which left us wondering what was up for most of the performance. I do hope said performer returns once his back injury is resolved. Next time, however, I hope they are able to bring a bit more showmanship to augment their musical talent. Maybe a new creative director is in order?

Amazing music, superb showmanship, it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Their technical expertise, brilliant song selection, and excellent humor made the evening truly memorable. 5 stars doesn't do the Piano Guys justice.

The Piano Guys: TERRIFIC Musicians, GREAT "Sound"

by RushR on 6/28/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

As a pianist myself, I really appreciated the artistry and musicianship of "The Piano Guys", even though one of them only played the cello! [Actually three different cellos.] They played many of their popular YouTube videos in the concert (which lasted well over two hours), and were quite entertaining as well, with some very funny comedy bits and song introductions. Their overall "sound" is absolutely FABULOUS, and coupled with some excellent video productions shown on the two big screens on stage, it made for a truly exceptional musical experience. In particular, the cello player [sorry, I can't remember his name] was an INCREDIBLE musician, and he produced some astounding audio electronic "loops" using a digital recording device he controlled with his foot. First, he recorded a certain basic musical line, then layered other patterns over it, and finally improvised a solo line on top of everything -- and all LIVE! Totally AMAZING!! I know this word is often overused, but these guys are really and truly AWESOME!!!

An Evening that was Over Too Soon!

by LibraryL8dy on 6/28/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

What an amazing evening of entertainment...the audience was enthusiastic as well they should have been for the amazing entertainers that we saw. This show was engaging and just perfection from beginning to end. The two Piano Guys were easy with the audience with many funny stories and very enjoyable exchanges between the two of them. The music, accompanied by some of their more famous videos was superb. I would highly recommend that you catch them when they come your way, as they don't always go on extensive tours. You will be in for a delightful fun-filled evening, appropriate for the entire family.
