About

The Phantom of the Opera on Tour

The longest-running show in Broadway history celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2018 with a spectacular new road production currently touring North America.

The Phantom of the Opera came to life when composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Charles Hart adapted French writer Gaston Leroux's 1910 horror novel about a disfigured musical genius that haunts the Paris Opera. Harold Prince directed the 1986 West End premiere in London. The show arrived in New York in 1988, with Michael Crawford in the title role, and went on to set box office records after winning seven Tony awards, including Best Musical.

Early reviews were outstanding. Clive Barnes of ‘The New York Post' lauded the musical as "a piece of impeccably crafted musical theater"; Howard Kissel of the ‘New York Daily News' called it "spectacular entertainment." It became a pop-culture blockbuster on the strength of its story, songs, and production values, of course, but also thanks to its unforgettable iconography (that mask!) and buzz-generating replica productions equaling those found on Broadway and the West End.

Director Cameron Mackintosh's new production of Phantom maintains these stellar standards. Rather than radically change the original, Mackintosh's revamp adds a fresh coat of technologically enhanced dazzle, grandeur, and pyrotechnic thrills to match its emotional fireworks.

Everything about this grandly produced new adaptation of Phantom is bigger and more spectacular than before: A 52-piece orchestra supports soaring melodies heard through a 200-speaker surround-sound system. Its famous chandelier, designed by Howard Eaton, contains more than 6,000 beads. And more than 1,200 costume pieces, many designed by Maria Björnson for the show's original production, are as colorfully joyous as the music itself.

Quentin Oliver Lee fills the title role's cape and mask to both visual and vocal perfection. Eva Tavares hits all the right high notes as soprano singer Christine Daaé, object of the Phantom's obsession. Texas-born Jordan Craig takes on the role of Christine's dashing childhood friend Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny. And Trista Moldovan adds comic relief as the irrepressible diva Carlotta Giudicelli.

The "music of the night" lives on in a show that remains forever new by remaining true to its magnificent origins.

    Beautiful theater performance

    by D. D. on 10/16/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

The costumes, orchestra, and singing were unbelievable. I didn't what to expect and this performance definitely exceeded any expectations. Derrick Davis played the Phantom and was unbelievable. His voice, acting, etc were phenomenal. The only con I would say is in regards to our seats. We sat in the Orchestra section in row DD. A few of the scenes had props that put the actors above the overhang and we couldn't see. Also, not as dramatic when the chandelier came down. In the future, I would make sure I had an unobstructed view. Other than that, the view of the stage was fine and enjoyed the production. Would highly recommend.

    Awesome

by AnnB on 10/16/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

I saw this play many years ago when it first came out in DC. This production was far superior. First of all, the Hippodrome is a fine theatre, easily accessible, with plenty of pre and post meal options. The production itself was fantastic with beautiful costumes, sets and even pyrotechnics. Derrick Davis did a fine job as the Phantom as did Emma Grimaldi as Christine. If you like big productions, this is one to see.

Phantom is my most favorite show

by Mel on 10/16/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

My husband and I have seen Phantom over ten times. We have seen this show in London, Las Vegas, Kennedy Center, high school performances, movies, and lots of other places. This performance was excellent also. The lead was played by an understudy. We saw the show Sunday, October 13th 1:00 pm performance. She was amazing. Her voice and acting was one of the best we have seen.

    Show was great, but.......

by j. on 10/16/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

Absolutely loved the show.....but the theater needs to be revamped. Seats are so small and crowded that when a large person sits on your left and right - it's very uncomfortable. They are so close together, that you must stand up to let people get passed you - and even then it's hard not to step on someone's toes.

Great Show -- My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife had seen this performance up in Detroit earlier in the year. We will definitely attend another Phantom show and attend more at the Hippodrome as this was our first show there and it's a great little theater. Thanks!!

by Liz on 10/15/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

This is not my first time seeing this show. And to this day, it still remains my favorite. The Phantom in this production truly had a hypnotic voice. All the actors did a great job, their facial expressions were on point. I would definitely see it again.

by Karen Weiss on 10/15/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

While I am not a theater person, per se, my daughter wanted to go (on her one weekend of “liberty” from the Naval Academy). I was completely amazed and loved every minute of it! Both the singing and the acting were phenomenal! My daughter (who loves the theater) said it was her favorite show ever!!! We had a wonderful time!

Set design was incredible! The use of space and movement added to the ambiance. The "O.G." actor pierced down to your core with his passion and emotion. The entire cast swept the audience into the story - a definite must see for even a casual Phantom fan!

What an amazing cast and the set design was simply incredible! I can’t decide which masterpiece I like best: the infamous chandelier, lighting/sound/smoke or the awesome disappearing stairs in the wall!!!
