The Phantom of the Opera on Tour

The longest-running show in Broadway history celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2018 with a spectacular new road production currently touring North America.

The Phantom of the Opera came to life when composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Charles Hart adapted French writer Gaston Leroux's 1910 horror novel about a disfigured musical genius that haunts the Paris Opera. Harold Prince directed the 1986 West End premiere in London. The show arrived in New York in 1988, with Michael Crawford in the title role, and went on to set box office records after winning seven Tony awards, including Best Musical.

Early reviews were outstanding. Clive Barnes of ‘The New York Post' lauded the musical as "a piece of impeccably crafted musical theater"; Howard Kissel of the ‘New York Daily News' called it "spectacular entertainment." It became a pop-culture blockbuster on the strength of its story, songs, and production values, of course, but also thanks to its unforgettable iconography (that mask!) and buzz-generating replica productions equaling those found on Broadway and the West End.

Director Cameron Mackintosh's new production of Phantom maintains these stellar standards. Rather than radically change the original, Mackintosh's revamp adds a fresh coat of technologically enhanced dazzle, grandeur, and pyrotechnic thrills to match its emotional fireworks.

Everything about this grandly produced new adaptation of Phantom is bigger and more spectacular than before: A 52-piece orchestra supports soaring melodies heard through a 200-speaker surround-sound system. Its famous chandelier, designed by Howard Eaton, contains more than 6,000 beads. And more than 1,200 costume pieces, many designed by Maria Björnson for the show's original production, are as colorfully joyous as the music itself.

Quentin Oliver Lee fills the title role's cape and mask to both visual and vocal perfection. Eva Tavares hits all the right high notes as soprano singer Christine Daaé, object of the Phantom's obsession. Texas-born Jordan Craig takes on the role of Christine's dashing childhood friend Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny. And Trista Moldovan adds comic relief as the irrepressible diva Carlotta Giudicelli.

The "music of the night" lives on in a show that remains forever new by remaining true to its magnificent origins.

This was my first professional play. It was everything I had been missing and more. The lights, the drama! The voices were incredible and the ballet was flawless. Watching the stage transform for different scenes so smoothly was simply amazing. Thank you for a wonderful production.

    Stunning

    by R. N. on 10/22/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

The entire performance was excellent. The theater could use an upgrade. Seats were old with no leg room.

The show was excellent, but many of the seats in the theater

by S.C. on 10/22/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

The show was excellent, but many of the seats in the theater provide an obstructed view of the stage. We were in the first row of the balcony, and we had a railing in the middle of our line of sight. In the intermission, we moved back several rows. The railing obstructed the view even from there, but it wasn't as bad. That was disappointing, especially when we paid $100 per seat.

Not a theatre person but loved it

by Mike on 10/21/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

I’m not really into this stuff but my wife wanted to see it so I took her. I was prepared to zone out and just “power through it”, but much to my surprise, I actually enjoyed it. The actors/actresses were amazing and extremely talented. The set designs were insane. The music was great. The production and sound qualify we’re spot on. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was a quite a mind-opening experience.

If I wasn’t very familiar with plot, i would’ve been lost while watching certain parts of this production. The singing was incredible. Overall I thought it was very good.

    Phantom of the Opera

by Phantom Lover on 10/20/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

Had wonderful seats. The sets and pyro effects were great. The singing was superb, especially the phantom. I had not seen the publicity ahead so I did not know the phantom was an African American actor. He was wonderful, very commanding performance.

Loved every minute of this brand-new restaging and the new sets were amazing! This was my second time seeing the show but it felt like the first time all over again. Derrick Davis as The Phantom was incredible, and his scenes with Kaitlyn Davis and Jordan Craig were electric.

    Amazing performance

by IGio on 10/20/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

The set design and the execution was phenomenal. The actors did such an incredible job that, at times, I would forget it was a live show and now pre-recorded. They all performed exceptionally well.

    Wonderful show!

    by B. D. on 10/20/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

We parked in the parking garage on Paca Street. There wasn't any parking spaces near the elevator to the theater, but it was a short walk in a well lit area to the entrance of the theater. It was convenient to pick our tickets up at will call and enjoy a meal in the Hippodrome cafe. The ceilings in the theater are beautiful. We sat in the upper balcony, but still had a good view of the revolving stag and amazing costumes. It was a great performance!

Awesome show. The balcony gives a better look, especially with the chandelier scenes & the various pyrotechnics. You could feel the heat even at the balcony level!!!

Blazing Set...with a Flickering Cast- Overall a Fiery Show!!

by E. Read on 10/18/19Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

Amazing set! I've seen The Phantom of the Opera several times over the years, and this production has one of the most intricate and surprising sets I've ever seen-truly breathtaking! I wish the acting and singing had more...fire behind it - or as least as much as the pyrotechnics on stage. The performance itself lacked passionate and feeling behind it to me and kind of fell short in that respect. Derrick Davis was underwhelming in my opinion, just a bit too flat and I didn't truly get that sense of anguish from his character. I thought that Rob Lindley (Monsieur André) and David Benoit (Monsieur Firmin) were quite good and had excellent comedic timing/delivery of their lines. I would say the most surprising performance of the night though honestly was by Jordan Craig and gave me a whole new respect for his character through his heartfelt depiction of Raoul. But those are just my immediate thoughts on it. Overall, it was a fantastic production and I would go and see it every night if possible! Bravo!!!!

the first half of the show this phantom seemed a little weak, but after intermission, he really did an amazing job, the Raoul of this show was one of the best I have seen yet. the phantom seemed to be nervous or unsure for the first half, but like I said, after he was comfortable, he did a terrific job. thank you all for working so hard to give such a great show
