Good, but the vocals were weak.

by samjohn on 7/11/09Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

Having seen the Phantom numerous times I think I've gotten a feel for a good production. The the most resent one was not one of the best. I took my daughter who was seeing it for the first time. She was very impressed. For my part, after the lavish sets and smoke and mirrors, I found the vocals were not quite up to what one would exspect. Both Christine and the Phantom didn't knock you out of your seat, but seemed to worrble through their song trying to make it work, but not getting quite there.

The Phantom never loses its magic.

by Katya on 7/11/09Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

The setting of the Orpheum is conducive to the Phantom of the Opera. From the moment the strings began to tune to the last note the performers had the audience captivated. All of the performers were a strong presence which enhanced the mystique. I've seen Phantom now three times and plan to see it again if possible. Bravo!

Phantom of the Opera was pretty good :)

by TheatreGeekSquad on 7/11/09Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

I was lucky enough to get to see Phantom of the Opera in MSP this spring. I can honestly say I loved the show itself. The cast was great, the set was brilliant, the music better yet, and they costumes were astonishing. The only complaint I have is with the administrative side of things. I wish shows would release pictures of ideas of how tall the set will be. This will give you a good idea of where to sit. I felt like the people at our show who had the most expensive seats on the floor didn't see as much as I did in the upper portion of the first balcony. I wish tickets were sold based on best view, not "closest".

    Always a good show!

by Grayanotoxin on 7/11/09Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

I am always happy to see a showing of Phantom; I don't think I've ever seen a bad one! This performance went very smoothly, and my friend who had never seen it before was in love. The reason I gave it four stars was because although it was still amazing, I was more impressed with the Phantom shows I have seen previously. Also, our Phantom was a substitute for the understudy, and while he did a good job, I've seen better. All in all, I'd ABSOLUTELY recommend this show to anyone- whether you've seen it before or not!

Will go again and again. Seen London & NYC and would return. This is one of the better performances I've seen here.

    muffled sounds

My least favorite of any. Wouldn't recommend. Muffled voices and sounds.

Production was phenomenal, but soprano was not.

    by WoodlandsFan46 on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

Thursday night's preview of The Phantom of the Opera produced mixed reactions from our section of the audience. The production effects get an A+; the set, lighting, orchestration, props, and costumes were fantastic. Boldly maneuvering the chandelier across the stage and then over and above the audience temporarily took our breath away. The set and props were beautiful and most impressive. Unfortunately, the soprano playing Christine, Kelly Grant, did not do her part justice. Her voice talent would have been far more appropriate as Carlotta's understudy, as their "prima donna" virtuoso style was often indistiguishable. Christine's clear pure voice should contrast Carlotta's overdone arias, but Ms. Grant's voice did no such thing--her performance of Webber's usually beautiful songs was not pleasing to the ear. However, the male leads--the Phantom, Raoul, and the managers--performed their parts beautifully. Phantom stole the show as he should.

    Mascarade costumes awesome!!

by Barksey on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

Was my granddaughter's birthday request (gift). Truly awesome. She said it was the best birthday present ever!! Granted it is just her 13th. Costumes, music, story line, there was nothing to not like. Loved the "skeleton" suit the manager wore. Way too awesome of an idea for Halloween!!

    Beautiful and sad love

by hiromi on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

The stage appearance and the decoration was so beautiful and made me into the whole story when it gave out a clue for the mood of the show. Also their voices shattered my heart into a wonderful feeling when they sang with all of their might just for a show which they did their very best. I recommend this to person who wants to see some horror with love and of course enjoy it!

converted my husband to live theater

by lovebunch on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

I have a husband that really enjoys end of the world type movies, lots of explosions, special effects etc When I bought the ticket to see Phantom he grumbled an okay. He went more out of duty to his wife than anything else. The instant the chandelier was raised in Phantom, he was drawn in. I do not know which was more enjoyable, the performance or watching my husband's enjoyment in watching the show. A quote from him during intermission is, " Flying aliens and special effects in a movie is one thing, seeing special effects in a live performance far surpasses anything else." We were both spellbound by the seamless, eloborate scene changes, the orchestra shook the theater, and the acting and music were breath taking. We have not stopped talking of it. In fact my husband said his dreams last night after the performance were filled with dramatic singing! This was a perfect date. It could not have been better.

    Fabulous Phantom

by dulci on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

I flew from Alabama to Houston to attend The Phantom of the Opera with my daughter. We had a fabulous evening. Our seats were great. We had a little trouble seeing the far left of the stage but it was really no problem. The Music was wonderful and not too loud. Parking was easy and was not a far walk. The entire cast was outstanding. I would recommend going to anyone and would go again myself. It was a great Mother / Daughter event to attend.

    Phantom was phenomenal!

by clusan on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

The Phantom of the Opera was phenomenal!!! I have seen it a few times and this performance did not disappoint. The performers voices were perfect and gave me chills. I would recommend this for anyone who loves Broadway type shows, and first timers. We brought my Mother-in-Law to see Phantom for the first time and she was blown away :-) May be a little frightening for very, very young children.

    Phantom of the Opera

by Hntrsgirl on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

I hadn't seen Phantom since it first came to Houston many years ago. This performance was not near as good as when I saw it with the original cast when it first started touring & came to Houston but I must say it was still a great performance & I would recommend it to anyone especially if you never seen it ....it's worth it believe me. Phantom of the Opera is one of my favorite shows.

4th time to see - would rank 4th but worth it

by msmtax on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

We have seen Phantom twice in New York and this is the second time to see it in Houston. The performance we saw on the 9th was very good but compared to the other three performances, not as good. Ex: Carlotta's frog voice was noticably foreign and strange. Previous performances did this much better. A person in our group who had never seen Phantom didn't even realize the "noise" was meant to be Carlotta. She thought it was just a strange noise off stage. There were other subtle differences comparing the performances but overall, it was money well spent and as always, one of the best.

    Phantom of the Opera

    by 6friends on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

We thoroughly enjoyed the night. Our seats were in orchestra right in row C which made it impossible to see Christine / phantom some times. I loved sitting closer. Last time we sat in center orchestra in row MM-the seating there was disappointing as the seats were not well staggered. To truly enjoy this wonderful production, I suggest you seek seats in center orchestra in the single alpha rows or in the front mezzanine area. Truly a treat!

    Good not great show

    by PhantomFan1991 on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

This was the sixth time we've seen 'Phantom' - dating back to 1991 in London. Overall, solid performances, but not a lot of wow. Tim Martin Gleason was excellent as the title character...strong voice and powerful emotions. We rank him in the top three of the actors we've seen in the role. Unfortunately, the second night's performance featured backup Kelly Jeanne Grant as Christine, who was below average: good voice but acting came across stiff and forced. Sean MacLaughlin was outstanding as Raoul - and we lucked into crossing paths with him leaving the theatre; nice guy who said he really likes Houston. Orchestration and staging were were outstanding. Based on the limited number of empty seats in the lower-level and the raucous standing ovation afterward, 'Phantom' still packs a powerful punch. I'd recommend going, especially if you've never experienced it.

The Phantom of the Opera was great!

by Dusty on 7/10/09Hobby Center - Houston

I really enjoyed watching The Phantom of the Opera. I have actually seen it before a few years ago, but I had to bring a friend who had never seen it. My only complaint is that our seats were not very good for the price I paid. I purchased 2 orchestra seating tickets, for $150. It said right orchestra but I did not realize that we would be so far to the right that sometimes we couldn't even see some of the actors on stage. I was pretty disappointed since I paid so much for the tickets. Other than that the performance was terrific and we had a great time. I just wish we would have had better seats since I spent so much.
