The Nutcracker On Tour

Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.

Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)

Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.

The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).

While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.

A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.

  • The Nutcracker, perfect for my grand daughters!

by lucky2222 on 12/14/16The Peabody Daytona Beach - Daytona BeachRating: 4 out of 5

We took our grand daughters to see The Nutcracker. We all enjoyed it. The only negative thing I have to say is that since we sat about 5 rows from the back, we were constantly subject to bright lights coming through the open door when late comers arrived. Then they stood in the aisle, discussing their seats. I think they should be made to wait until the intermission to enter if they are late. Also towards the end people left early! I thought that was very rude. I was surprised to see such lack of good theater manners. The production and the costumes were very good.

  • Very nice.

I took my daughter to the show for a surprise for her 8th birthday. She has been in ballet since she was three so it was nice to finally take her. Loved seeing the excitement in her eyes.

I was deeply moved by the grace and talent on the stage

  • Felt like a kids recital , not professional

The North Star, sugar palm Fairy and the guy she danced with were amazing. They made the ballet for me. The rest of the ballet was amacher. The dancing was not together and sometimes they looked lost. I am used to seeing the Orlando ballet co who is amazing and I thought this would be the same. It is noncomparible. I was very disappointed.

  • The PB Nutcracker was wonderful!

    by Dancer15 on 12/14/16Peoria Civic Center - PeoriaRating: 4 out of 5

This is a great show for all ages and a fun tradition to enjoy the holidays. Each Nutcracker performance is always a little different, and this one did not disappoint! The only part I missed from performances of the past is having mom's /adult females n the opening party scene and the Russian dancers tumbling. Overall a fantastic show though!

  • Not what you would expect for the price

by Qkskdhhryfbbw on 12/14/16The Peabody Daytona Beach - Daytona BeachRating: 1 out of 5

We paid $200 plus for 4 tickets. View was partially obstructed on one seat which was not mentioned or expected at this price. The kids that did the show I'm sure were their parents pride. We expected for the cost more than a talent show showcasing the various levels of talent from local dance studios. Total disappointment.

  • It was okay but...

by Screwthisnicknamebullsht on 12/14/16The Peabody Daytona Beach - Daytona BeachRating: 3 out of 5

Be prepared for okay dancing by a lot of kids and poorly put together acting fight scenes but that's what you get when you can't afford real dancers.

  • The Nutcracker was AWESOME!

by sherry0127 on 12/13/16The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

My daughter & I go to see The Nutcracker every year. Sometimes it's just the two of us & sometimes we invite a friend or two to join us. Even though we had seen it multiple times, this year it was really good. We had a wonderful time.

  • Great local production of the Nutcracker!

by wufeisgirl on 12/13/16Adler Theatre - DavenportRating: 5 out of 5

The event was fantastic! The orchestra was great, and had great mastery of their music. The dancing was superb. The only regrettable issue were all the rude people who thought it appropriate to talk the entire time, which had no bearing on the performance itself, hence the 5 stars.
