The Nutcracker On Tour

Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.

Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)

Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.

The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).

While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.

A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.

  • Great Show

by SheBeMe on 1/11/17Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

This was an excellent staging and performance of The Nutcracker. The children were talented and very cute. There was only one complaint that I had, along with the other two people with me - even though it was stated before the show began, to "please put all electronic devices away", there were many people sitting in the rows in front of me who had their cell phones out recording the ballet, actual flash cameras were flashing and one man was recording holding up a mini tablet. It was very distracting and interfered with our view of the stage.

  • Middle school production

by Tommyboi2 on 1/11/17Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 1 out of 5

Was unsatisfied to find out this was the equivalent of going to my niece's 5th Grade School production. Surprised that Ticketmaster would sell tickets for this considering it was not a professional act and it was poorly received as over 80% of the crowd walked out by intermission. We left as well.

  • Pass on this one.

This is a kids show. Nothing like the picture shown. Each scene didn't really play out a story that made sense.

I took my 10-year-old daughter and her friend to see the Indy Ballet school's Nutcracker. My daughter had seen it before with her grandparents but I had not.they were incredible!! it was beautiful;the sets, the music, the costumes. It had the appearance of a professional performance, not a ballet school recital. We look forward to seeing it again next year.

  • Christmas tradition!!

by Guest987 on 12/29/16Murat Theatre at Old National Centre - IndianapolisRating: 4 out of 5

The orchestra was fantastic, made the whole show! The show was right in step with the music. Which in my opinion makes the show even more remarkable. It's something that I went to as a little boy with my grandparent. Now I get to do the same for my neice and nephew and also my son. To share the experience is a lifelong memory and should be shared by all.

  • Wonderful date with my daughter

by Beachlover4 on 12/27/16Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - BoiseRating: 4 out of 5

My daughter has been wanting to see this show for a long time. We finally went this year as an early Christmas present. The theater is beautiful and I would say just about every seat is a good one. I did notice that it didn't follow the story completely. The ending was different than I remember. The music and dancing were beautiful!

  • Eglevsky Nutcracker Sparkles

by Impressed9 on 12/26/16Tilles Center Concert Hall - BrookvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Long Island families are lucky to have the Eglevsky Ballet's top-notch Nutcracker performances just down the road at the CW Post Tilles Center. Every year on a weekend shortly before Christmas, Eglevsky puts on its sparkling production headlined by top professional dancers in the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. This year's production was, as always, a delight. We attended the 1:00 pm Sunday matinee, which was perfect for our seven year-old granddaughter, a devoted dance student and Nutcracker fanatic. She approved of this year's Christmas tree and said that the Eglevsy Nutcracker compared favorably with one she had seen at Lincoln Center earlier in December!

  • Okay

by Tuxpumpkey on 12/25/16Westchester County Center - White PlainsRating: 2 out of 5

The dancers were very good. The problem came when the music stopped playing during the dance of the snow queen. The dancers continued but without the music it wasn't terribly enjoyable. A decision should have been to stop st that point havenintermissdion until music was restored.

What a treat for Gramps and grand daughter. Delicious and delightful.

  • Fine performance, issues

by IndyLB on 12/22/16Murat Theatre at Old National Centre - IndianapolisRating: 3 out of 5

While this was a fine performance of the Nutcracker, I was not overly impressed. The symphony is a lovely addition but the acoustics are mediocre at best. The baby screaming in the balcony for 10 minutes during the second half was beyond annoying. I am shocked ushers did not resolve more quickly. I feel like paying $75/ticket for a ballet should provide some semblance of audience respect. I am tired of the Murat selling candy in crinkly bags for children too young to sit through a performance so they can make extra money and I can listen to cellophane wrappers instead of what is happening on the stage. Dancing a B overall with a few A standouts.

The show was good and the theater was small. All seats have a great view. The show was a great value.

  • OK for the kids

by Jeb47 on 12/21/16Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - BoiseRating: 3 out of 5

I thought the dancers were average and the sets lacked the lavishness expected in a Nutcracker.
