The Nutcracker On Tour

Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.

Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)

Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.

The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).

While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.

A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.

The Nutcracker has become a Christmas tradition. The venue was beautiful and historic, and there is not a bad seat in the house. Acoustics were good, but we were disappointed that there was no live orchestra-just a prerecorded soundtrack. Dancers were phenomenal though.

  • Good for Peoria

    by 25bella on 12/13/17Peoria Civic Center - PeoriaRating: 3 out of 5

It is a tradition for my family to attend Nutcracker every year. We were happy that a Saturday matinee was added a few years back. This makes it more convenient for grandchildren to attend. I have traveled the world and know what to expect out of a professional production. Peoria Ballet's Nutcracker this year was more like a student performance. The only professional dancers were three men, one being the artistic director. With that said, the artistic director did an okay job showcasing the students. However, people pay to see a professional production. My recommendation is that some professional dancers are brought in next year to heighten the experience for patrons who are paying a hefty ticket price. Peoria Ballet's Nutcracker has been just average for the past four years. Peoria needs to be wowed again. Regardless, we will continue to make it a family tradition and continue to support the arts in Peoria.

  • The Nutcracker disappoints

    by BellaJ57 on 12/13/17Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 2 out of 5

First I would like to begin by stating how excited I was to see the Nutcracker ballet with my son's fiancee and her daughter. I had not been to see the Nutcracker in years and remembered the production that I saw at the Michigan Theater as first rate. This was not to be repeated, however. I thought there would be a live orchestra and also a traveling, professional troupe - emphasis, traveling dancers with some local dancers and children. I paid $45 a ticket, not crazy expensive but seats reflected this price. The first act was dreadful, the dancing was not professional and brought to light that this production was performed by a school of dance, and not professional ballerina's. They brought out most of their dance troupe ranging in ages. One ballerina slipped and almost fell. The music was taped. I gave this two stars because the 'Guest Artists' helped greatly in the 2nd act. They still could not bring this production up to the level it should have been when paying good money. I would expect to see this type of performance at a high school performing arts theater. That's not to say the dancers didn't try to put their heart and soul into the production, I just should not have to pay professional pricing to see this type of dancing.

This was the first time I ever saw “The Nutcracker” and boy, it was really great. The dancers, the costumes, that scenery, the whole production was an absolute delight. A must see for everyone. Looking forward to seeing it again next year.

  • Fantastic!

    by CT850 on 12/12/17Genesee Theatre - WaukeganRating: 5 out of 5

My 7 year old granddaughter REALLY enjoyed and it's hard to have a bad seat at the Genesee. Only thing that would have made it even better would be a live orchestra, but they're not set up for that and ticket prices would be accordingly higher. Nevertheless, the sound system is very good.

  • Very good show.

by HuronRiver on 12/12/17Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 4 out of 5

We really enjoyed the show. The young people were, by far, the best parts of the show. The dances were exceptional and the music was very good with an appropriate volume. The scenery was nice and fit in well. We would go back and see it again. Some small downsides, the Michigan Theater seats are a tad narrow and the leg room is tight. The folks who got seats in the center have a hard way to go to get to their seats. I think that the fake snow could have been swept during intermission, it could have proven dangerous for the dancers, but thankfully was not. The littlest kids should have had a chance to be recognized at the end, but were not. Still a very good show.

The show did not have a store to the thyme. It could have been better. I was expecting more. Was a bit disappointed. Was not worth the price.
