The Nutcracker On Tour
Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.
Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)
Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.
The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).
While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.
A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.
It was a great event with my wife.....wish there was a dress code and possibly an option or show for adults only.
Old dilapidated and chairs not raised high enough between rows.
The performance was Great. I have waited a long time to see this show....all the performers did a great job.....a must see
Years ago, I took my little girl to the city to see the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center every year; we had a long tradition of going together. This year, I was thrilled to take my all-grown-up daughter and my 3 year old granddaughter to the Nutcracker at Westchester County Center. It exceeded our expectations and she was enchanted with the pretty dancers, the lights, the music, and especially all of the ballet dancing! It was an unforgettable experience and I would highly recommend it! Very kid friendly while at the same time, gorgeous costumes and scenery, beautiful music, and wonderful dancing! Thanks for continuing our tradition!
Amazing rendition of the classic Nutcracker, everything was beautiful & the orchestra was magical, almost felt like I was part of the show! Definitely recommend! A must see for the holiday season!
We have seen many of the Makaroff Nutcracker productions over the years, but this was undoubtedly the best. Having the Fox Valley Symphony playing the music instead of recorded music and having the Appleton Boy Choir voices really gave the production a professional touch. The guest soloists were wonderful and the local students were exceptionally good. We really enjoyed this and hope it becomes a yearly tradition at the PAC.
Don't be late, as they turn down the lights then it is next to impossible to find a seat without help. The ballet was amazing to watch. I have never seen one live only on TV. Intermission was perfectly timed, however you might want to bring your own drinks because the lines at concessions was super long.
the show lacked quality and energy....very poor performance!
The Nutcracker by The Eglevsky Ballet was professional done. It was a pleasant experience, and I would highly recommend it to all. Felt like you were on Broadway!
Was really good. Took the ex wife. Will not go again. It was nice just not my thing.
Love the ballet, absolutely entertaining and stunning performance. Only thing I really disliked or had a distaste for was the amount of children yelling throughout the show. (but kids will be kids) This is a show you would want to take the family to. If you're looking for a date night with adults; this is not the show to see.
First half was just ok. Very slow. Very disappointed. Second half was good. Music and dancing great. The whole show should have been great. The ppl I was with also felt the same. A lot of money for half a good show.
My family loved the Birmingham ballet's presentation of the Nutcracker. Well done Birmingham
We’ve seen Birmingham Ballet’s Nutcracker every other year for the past decade. I’m not sure how, but it gets better each iteration. Perhaps I won’t wait 2 years to see the next one (which will be at a new venue next year!).
Enjoyable presentation, took my 89 year old mother and my 11 year old great niece. Both generations enjoyed the show.
It was an amazing show!! Not a ballet fan...but loved the it!!!
I found it to be a glorified Christmas dance recital. Lots of mistakes by the dancers and definitely not professional except for the sugar plum fairy.
My grand daughter, mother and I loved our experience at the Birmingham Ballet's production of The Nutcracker. Meeting the cast afterwards was the best!! Everyone was so nice and sweet. We can't wait to go back next year!
well written and performed ballet, and the music was spectacular!!! the dancers were fantastic and it all came together in a terrific performance!!!
My daughter and I had a really good time at the Makaroff Youth Ballet performance of the Nutcracker - the costumes were excellent, the sets were fun and whimsical and I thought the dancing was great, especially since most of the dancers are not yet professionals (but I think a few have real potential to continue forward in their training). We're so glad we were able to attend.
