The Nutcracker On Tour
Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.
Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)
Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.
The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).
While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.
A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.

Beautiful historic theatre - not a bad seat in the house. Performers were awesome and seemed to enjoy themselves as much as we enjoyed watching them. Sound system was ok, could be better
Awesome show! Dancing was excellent act 2 was a little tiring but it had been a long day for me, but excellent show!!
The Civic Ballet hosted a wonderful event. The talent was amazing and the entire show exceeded my expectations!
Perfect acustics and beutiful Ballet love Sprekels
We attended the Nutcracker at the Genesee Theatre last weekend and were blown away by the elegance, professionalism and staging/choreography of the dancers, as well as the outstanding costumes, scenery and lighting! I've seen this ballet several times and this was BY FAR one of the most professional and incredible performances I've ever seen! Granted a few dancers are professional, but the vast majority of the cast are teens and children. I look forward to seeing additional performances by Stacy Keller's students! I heartily encourage others to attend a performance also! Outstanding company! Kudos to all!
After paying $240+ for 3 tickets, I was expecting a professional presentation of at least the equivalent of the San Francisco Ballet performance of The Nutcracker I was fortunate enough to attend in 2012. Instead, there were only 2 performers that even seemed somewhat professional, and they were the final two dancers in the program. I found myself rolling my eyes and sometimes giggling at the amateurish aspects, then fuming because I was so excited to bring my adult niece and nephew to this production and introduce them to The Nutcracker as possibly a new family tradition for Christmas. Sorry, not to this.
The dancers are excellent. This version of the nutcracker is fun and appropriate for all ages. The venue is beautiful and festive my date and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
This was an AMAZING Nutcracker put in by Volusia Civic Ballet. They put a nice spin o. the original version by transitioning Clara from young to older then back again. All the dancers & props were amazing. I HIGHLY recommend & encourage everyone to come see this Nutcracker next year!😊😊😊
The talent was outstanding! The show should have more seats. A lot of people did not get to come.
Was amazing!! Those kids did a wonderful job, they should be so proud!
Best show ever!!!! Dancers were very professional. I admire all of these girls and guys for all of their dedication. They gave an outstanding presentation. Highly recommended!!
I was completely unaware that this was a children's performance. I can't say anything bad about the actual performers, they did well and were talented, but when I took my wife (who has never seen the nutcracker) to this performance, it was incredibly awkward. It was like watching a children's school play. I was incredibly disappointed. there SHOULD be some indication of the fact that this was not performed by adults. To describe the performance, it was difficult to watch and follow. Where professional performers can convey the actual plot via dance and interpretation, if you did not already know the story, there was absolutely no way you could follow along (without reading the playbook) great job for the kids, but terrible for a date night play.
Everything about this production was beautiful, from the costumes to the stage to the dancers themselves. It was really well done, the kids did great, and it really puts you in the Christmas Spirit!
I was falling asleep. It was boring. I thought my wife was gonna be mad but she said she found herself thinking about work and house chores because she was bored as well. Music was very nice so I give them an A+ but performance was mediocre when I was paying attention. Kids screaming and crying on both sides of the theater is what kept me from totally falling asleep. Why would you bring toddlers and babies to this? After the show we went to see a movie to satisfy our need for entertainment. We have attended many plays and performances and I have enjoyed them a lot but this was just lacking. It felt like I was watching a high school production vs a professional one.......
This was our favorite Nutcracker yet! Bravo to the dancers! The parking pass included as an add-on was for a valet only lot. It would have been nice to mention that - I had no cash on me for the valet
I so enjoyed this year's production. The stage sets, the props, the costumes and dancing choreography, ALL were truly outstanding this year!
Great show. I enjoyed every minute. Staging, costumes and location was perfect. Dancers were on point. Its been the best nutcracker I've seen.
The entire production is quite impressive. The young dancers are well rehearsed & the show is very entertaining for all audience members. Beautiful costumes & sets; and the many dancers give amazing performances in each scene. It's an excellent production of a classic! Ticket prices are a great value & there is not a bad seat in the house. Everyone should see it!
There were special actives in the lobby for the children could connect with the dancers.
