The Nutcracker On Tour

Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.

Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)

Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.

The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).

While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.

A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.

  • Beautiful Ballet

    by Kate026 on 12/13/21DECC Symphony Hall - DuluthRating: 4 out of 5

The Duluth Ballet put on a great performance of the Nutcracker! I brought my 8 year old daughter, it was her first time attending a ballet and she really enjoyed herself. The four stars is because parking was horrible. We waited in line for 30+min to get into the ramp and then had to drive up and down every aisle to find an open spot. We ended up being a few minutes late which was not ideal.

So excited about attending this performance. I have wanted to take my granddaughter to see the Nutcracker since she was born. Friday night it finally happened. My daughter-in-law, granddaughter (7 years old), and myself (Grandma) had a wonderful time. The venue was beautiful! The ballet was fabulous! The best part was watching my granddaughter as she was ‘taken away’ into the magic of the dance. She was in awe! Thank you for providing us with such a delightful experience.

  • Didn't like the new version

by Disappointed Customer on 12/13/21DECC Symphony Hall - DuluthRating: 1 out of 5

I came to watch the Nutcracker and this version was a terrible twist from the original version. Please leave classic shows like this alone and don't put your own twist on it. We left after the first intermission. Very disappointed.

  • Dazzling

by TAS force on 12/13/21The Stanley - UticaRating: 5 out of 5

I went to this with my daughter and friend to see the Nutcracker. This is clearly put on by a local ballet school with a few guest dancers, but it was so professional.. I'm amazed at the hours of practice that must have happened to make this such a success. The costumes were exquisite. We thoroughly enjoyed this

  • Great “post” COVID Performance

by Nutcracker Dance Mom on 12/13/21The Stanley - UticaRating: 5 out of 5

The theater did everything they could to make this a great experience. There were a few hiccups determining staff needs for concessions but due to the times we are living in they were all friendly and accommodating. Kudos to the lone concession guy on Saturday and the staff member that came to help him out. The show and the venue were amazing!

  • Unique Experience

It was a wonderful night for me. I have always liked the history of the nuctcraker but I have never been able to see a real play, it was a beautiful evening and a unique experience for me. Since the curtain rose the colors, the music and the performance of all the actors were amazing, all the children and youngsters did a magnificent job.I loved the story of the nutcraker.

  • Little disappointed

by Kathy on 12/8/21Yucaipa Performing Arts Center Indoor Theatre - YucaipaRating: 3 out of 5

The dancers were good and overall it was a pleasant production. Very disappointed that the sugar plum fairy and the gentleman who dances with her were not live, but put on film to watch. What is that? Also the concession stand was pretty weak

  • Nutcracker at the Forum Binghamton NY

by PM on 12/8/21Broome County Forum Theatre - BinghamtonRating: 4 out of 5

The performance at The Forum was great! The seats in the balcony are very close together and made it a little uncomfortable. I don’t remember the seats on the main floor being that way.

  • Absolutely wonderful!!!

by ShyGal on 12/8/21Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

We took our seven year old granddaughter to see the Nutcracker! It’s a family tradition that we started with our daughter, and will continue with our grandchildren. The show was delightful, the seats were good, and we felt very safe during this pandemic. The staff was also very nice and helpful. We highly recommend making this show part of you holiday tradition as well!!

  • It was a great adaptation to a local classic presentation

by Local Family on 12/8/21California Theatre of the Performing Arts - San BernardinoRating: 4 out of 5

The cast worked fluidly, efficiently and with great festive cheer. It was a great introduction to the holiday season.

  • Children's recital

by Linda on 12/8/21Yucaipa Performing Arts Center Indoor Theatre - YucaipaRating: 1 out of 5

There weren't any professional dancers, just students. The "big event" was a video of professionals. If I wanted to watch professional dancers on a screen, I could have stayed home and watched for free. Even upon entering the Performing Arts Center, there were no directions of where to go, etc. Or anyone greeting/directing in the lobby. Even the program was filled with typos and grammar errors.

  • Fantastic in every way . Very best performance ever.

by Keena on 12/8/21Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

This year’s performance was professional across the board. Simply breathtaking. And you could tell that the artists were enjoying themselves as well. It was a joy to watch them perform. What an experience. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. You bring so much joy to your lucky audiences!

  • Wonderful Ballet

    by d. m. on 12/8/21Broome County Forum Theatre - BinghamtonRating: 5 out of 5

Great seats. Awesome show. Ballet very well done. I have hearing aids that let me switch over to where all background noise is eliminated thanks to the Forum being equipped with that technology. Bravo to all who entertained us.

  • Annual tradition!

by Laura on 12/7/21Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

I've been taking my elderly parents to this show for over a decade and this year was extra special. We got to see the show on the same day that my mom turned 90 years old! We also got to bring my sister and her daughter who have lived in California all these years and weren't able to attend. They loved it, too. The Civic is an amazing place and the BTO are a wonderful group of entertainers. I will continue to have this tradition every year as long as I can!

  • Great show, disrespectful crowd

by Chi on 12/7/21Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 4 out of 5

I don't recall such a noisy crowd at the Civic Theater before this year. This is a ballet, not a comedy show or a concert, so crowd noise can be very distracting. It seems like every other person in the venue was eating some item with crinkly plastic wrap, which was loud and echoed throughout the seating area. It was constant, all over the crowd. People in front, next to, and behind us, all consuming something in noisy wrapping. I don't know if the Civic could do anything about this. People used to know better but not anymore apparently.

  • Such a Wonderful Experience

by John W. on 12/7/21Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

Starting off I would like to praise the venue. Akron Civic Theater is truly a hidden gem. It’s sad to say that in the 10+ years of living around the community this is the first time I have been to the theater. I had a friend that once there for a comedy show that told me that the theatre is one of the most beautiful around. I have been to many others and this one is hands down the most beautiful. The craftsmanship that has gone into the everything will leave you in awe. Any production would be presented perfectly here. Now for the show. Absolutely beautifully done. You can tell the cast had put so much time to make it so special for the audience. So many people involved it is so impressive to see everything just come together so beautifully. During the ballet I just was in awe with some of the many impressive performances done by the cast. So elegantly and graceful. As this time was only myself and wife, in the future as our family grows we will be in regular attendance for years to come. Such a wonderful program and hope everyone involved know how appreciative the audience and city of Akron is to have them there. Thank you again and have a happy holiday season.

  • Stunning

by Marcy on 12/7/21California Theatre of the Performing Arts - San BernardinoRating: 4 out of 5

Beautiful ballet dancers. Especially the mens ballet performance was just unbelievably stunning. Gorgeous costumes. Very talented young children. So much mental strength and focus and brain stimulation! The only con is that a very tall woman sat in front of me and I had a very poor view the entire night.
