The Nutcracker On Tour

Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.

Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)

Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.

The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).

While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.

A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.

  • Avoid...

by CrystalWI on 12/15/21DECC Symphony Hall - DuluthRating: 1 out of 5

Purchased tickets MANY weeks ago... the week before they decided that the audience will NOW be required, during the ENTIRE performance, to wear masks... or they would be banned from the venue... as this condition was implemented AFTER the ticket sales and I will not wear a mask... they refused to refund my purchase. I wasted the ticket price of two tickets to a venue that seeks control and manipulation to force people to comply to their fear all in the name of "safety" and yet I was told that not ONE performer was masked.

The show was just great. All the way from the "Ornaments" to the "King & Queen" dancers. Music was fantastic. Enjoyed it very much. Looking forward to more shows by these folks.

  • It was thoroughly enjoyable!

It has been a yearly tradition to go to see a production of the nutcracker somewhere every year for a couple of decades now. I've seen the biggest productions and the littlest productions. They all have slightly different choreography and costumes. The stories all vary slightly. This production was a slightly more simplified choreography then some, but was pretty performed beautifully in its own right. Moreover, the way in which they cast their youngest students was adorable. The Basey is a great place for a show! And the Christmas craft fair next door was a beautifully curated group of vendors.

  • We enjoyed it. It was beautiful.

Amazed by the dancers strength and ability. They portrayed the story perfectly through dance. It was a beautiful performance. Bravo!

  • Performance fantastic, audience not so

by denasmaturin on 12/15/21Heymann Performing Arts Center - LafayetteRating: 4 out of 5

The production was beautiful and moving. I just wish the people surrounding me would have put their cell phones away. The light from the phones (even if on low) is distracting to those around them. Plus do we really have to have popcorn to watch a classical ballet? I’d advice the Heymann not to sell food.

Lafayette Ballet Theatre puts on an absolutely beautiful, professional production of the Nutcracker. The guest artists are amazing and everything is done so well. I love watching this performance each year.

The show was a delight! The performance was so well done - the dancers put their whole hearts into it. The staging and sets were top notch as well. We took a five year old who was mesmerized. Great holiday tradition at the amazing Count Basie Theater, where the incredible staff makes you feel so welcome - from the door security check folks to ticket taking, snack bar and throughout.

by Brandon on 12/15/21Victory Theatre - EvansvilleRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great telling of the classic story. From new costumes to new handmade backdrops, it was wonderful display of dance and art. What a great way for kids of all ages to express themselves and their talents. Kudos to Ballet Indiana. A new tradition started this year.

  • Bring back the traditional storyline

by Sam on 12/15/21DECC Symphony Hall - DuluthRating: 1 out of 5

The first act was far too much running around of the youth dancers. Original storyline was tossed aside. Second act was better, the professional dancers w were fabulous, but I missed all the characters and costumes that were missing in this new version. How can you have the Nutcracker without the Mouse King, the Sugar Plum Fairies, etc? I will not attend another performance if it's not the traditional story. Not everything needs to be reimagined!

  • Great performance from performers .. But.

by Funfam on 12/14/21Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red BankRating: 3 out of 5

The performance was great!! Was happy to be back. Would have given it five stars but the fact that you couldn’t see the expressions on the kids faces took away from overall show. They did a great job though. We love to see the nutcracker this time of year! Really gets you into Christmas spirit!! Merry Christmas!!

  • Nutcracker Duluth MN

by Queen of the Lake on 12/14/21DECC Symphony Hall - DuluthRating: 5 out of 5

The performance was great. Costumes were beautiful and the dancers talented. The theater however needs new seating and a good cleaning. We were in the second row center which smelled like urine.

I have been taking my granddaughter to the Nutcracker since she was a year old. This was the worst performance I have ever seen and also the most expensive. Different than in past years.

  • So GREAT!

by Deb on 12/14/21Victory Theatre - EvansvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The dancers were wonderful, the choreography was fantastic, and is it really Christmas without the Nutcracker??

  • The show was great venue was TERRIBLE

by Lexi on 12/14/21Heymann Performing Arts Center - LafayetteRating: 2 out of 5

The show was so worth the price and more! The place needs an upgrade. We purchased tickets on the balcony 2 and it was HOTTTTTT as HE!!!!!!!!!! I called the place twice the offered nothing but someone is working on it. Thats the Hymans issue not mine🤷‍♀️ its business they should have refunded people at least 1/2 the tickets price since we got half of what we paid for. I will not go back to the Hyman. I was not the only complaint! Come Hyman do bettee😮‍💨😥
