The Nutcracker On Tour

Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.

Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)

Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.

The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).

While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.

A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.

  • An Awesome Treat for the Holidays!

by Latisha on 12/21/21Rating: 5 out of 5

I took my daughter and my niece to see the Nutcracker in Memphis, TN at the Orpheum on 12.18.21 and let me tell you-it was AWESOME! Beauty at its finest! The performers glided across the stage with such precission and grace. We were in awe...to see the Nutcracker on television is one thing, but to see it in person is another. We will be back next year. In fact, I think that I will make this experience a part of our holiday tradition...

The Nutcracker was so well done and enjoyed every minute of it! But the seats we had were so tight that I couldn’t fit my legs in front of me and I’m only 5’4.

  • The nutcracker

by HH on 12/20/21The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - MemphisRating: 4 out of 5

It was amazing. Would have liked to have been able to purchase a nutcracker after the show itself was over so we didn’t have to worry about missing anything but the vendor was closed already. It was also a bit toasty in there but other than that it was amazing and we enjoyed it so much. 10/10

I adore going to go see this play every year. It is so wonderful to see all of these younger dancers getting to preform and have fun. Yes, it may have its 'mistakes' or the occasional stage issue but that is part of the charm watching a live performance. The crew, both behind and on stage, does a fantastic job!

  • Ok Local Production

by Hoosier Dad on 12/18/21Victory Theatre - EvansvilleRating: 3 out of 5

For a local production, it was ok. Definitely not the Moscow or Bloomington ballet. For the quality it seemed a little expensive.

  • Missing the Christmas feel

by Linda Kaye on 12/16/21DECC Symphony Hall - DuluthRating: 1 out of 5

First off- the orchestra and talent were exceptional. However, after excitedly awaiting the return of the Nutcracker, my guest and I were disappointed. Gone was the Christmas party, Maria’s dream of princes, mouse kings and trip to afar away place. There were no Spanish ladies, Arabian rugs, Chinese dancers or Russian dancers. This was replaced with berry pickers, sailors, and lumberjacks. The biggest loss was the large Mother Ginger with her skirt filled with gingerbread children. I come to the Nutcracker to have all the glorious Christmas feels. This was a version that could be performed any time of year. So sad that they changed the “magic”. After attending for 18 years- I may not be back to Duluth but will seek out a performance elsewhere.

  • Lacking experience

by Sugar Plum on 12/16/21Victory Theatre - EvansvilleRating: 2 out of 5

I was under the impression that this was a professional ballet. As it turns out, it was performed by local dance students. I just wish I would have known. Several years ago, I attended the same event, performed by the Russian ballet and it was phenomenal! I went into this one with the same expectations and honestly, it was a let down.

  • The dancers did not disappoint.

    by Christmas2021 on 12/16/21DECC Symphony Hall - DuluthRating: 3 out of 5

The dancers were amazing, their costumes were beautiful and the orchestra was brilliant. The only thing that led to disappointment was the set design and the nutcracker himself. We have a tradition of going to this ballet and it provided much more entertainment when there was a larger nutcracker toy for all the kids to see. I was first row balcony and you couldn’t even see the nutcracker doll and he was nowhere else to be seen. Also the set design was disappointing as there were only minimal changes in between acts. Visual is everything.

  • Needed a more considerate audience

by catlady on 12/15/21Heymann Performing Arts Center - LafayetteRating: 3 out of 5

This was a nice performance for a local ballet troupe. Unfortunately, the family sitting in front of us behaved like they were doing game night at home. The man repeatedly took out his phone to check emails. He got a candy bar at intermission but did not open it until the second act started, crackling paper all the way. He encouraged his young daughter to yell "bravo" any time someone applauded. That encouraged the little girl to go on sprees of applause and "bravos" all by herself. The man allowed their young son to stand whenever he wanted, obstructing the view of people behind him. The mom would occasionally tell the little girl to "shhh" but was generally oblivious to everything. They badly need a course in how to act in public!

  • Great Show

by Babs on 12/15/21Victory Theatre - EvansvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The Nutcracker was wonderful. The colors were vibrant and beautiful. The Philharmonic was awesome. The only problem I had was that the concession stand ran out of food. Knowing that they were having a big crowd the food management person didn't manage it very well. By the time I got up to the counter they were out of nachos and pretzels and was told they sold out of those early. Needless to say, the Victory missed out on money because of poor food management.
