The Nutcracker On Tour

Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.

Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)

Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.

The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).

While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.

A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.

  • Amazing Production

by C. I. on 12/13/22California Theatre of the Performing Arts - San BernardinoRating: 5 out of 5

I went to see my granddaughter perform in the Nutcracker this year. It's the second time I've been. Everything, from the stage setting to the costumes, music, dancing and performing was simply magnificent! My grandgirl had a much longer stage presence than she did last year so that was a wonderful bonus She looked so beautiful in her blue dress, long bouncy curls and big bow. I was near the middle, to the left, third row from the front so I had a great seat. More of the action on stage took place in the middle and left side so I got a great view of the production. It was so much fun! The only negative is the price of the snacks and the women's bathroom line at intermission. I did, however, get an adorable medium sized wooden nutcracker doll for a really great price. This performance is absolutely worth seeing.

  • Nutcracker

The Nutcracker was good, but surprised it was dance studio that put on the production. It was not advertised that it was a local dance studio. Was expecting more experienced adult ballerinas.

  • Wonderful show

This was our first time seeing the Nutcracker and we thoroughly enjoyed the show. I will suggest for those that are not familiar with the story or just simply haven't read it recently, to read the pamphlet provided to understand the scenes. Otherwise you may be watching (a little lost) and not understanding what is being acted out - like me, because there is no narrations or lines during the show.

  • Terribly disappointing

by Jen on 12/13/22Beau Rivage Theatre - BiloxiRating: 1 out of 5

When I purchased the tickets I was not aware it was a local production. It was terrible, started late and then twenty minutes in paused due to technical difficulties. Not enjoyable at all.

I absolutely loved seeing the Nutcracker. I have always wanted to see it in person and finally got too. The choreography was beautiful and the dancers were so elegant. I definitely recommend going if you haven’t been

Nice to see a local troupe perform a favorite holiday classic. And all were very talented, poised, and professional!

Was absolutely amazing. I have always wanted to go to the nutcracker. I finally got to go and I brought my sister with me we both had an amazing time. The performers and music were outstanding. For a moment I felt like I was in New York!

The story was changed and it was confusing and missed alot of the parts that make it the magical performance you expect. My granddaughter who is a ballerina hated it and it was like seeing a recital of new dancers and not a professional ballet that cost me a small fortune to see! Sorry not sorry!

  • Good Show

by Ballet Nana on 12/13/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

My granddaughter and I attends the Nutcracker every year, except the last two due to COVID. So we were so excited to come back this year. The show itself was wonderful and we even spoke to one of the dancers who was very sweet. However, we were extremely disappointed that there was no shopping to do as we also look forward to adding to our Nutcracker and ornament collection. Also your Christmas decor left little to be desired. Most of all I had purchased a box of candy for my granddaughter and this very grown man picked it up and walked away with it. So those three things put a damper on the afternoon. However meeting the dancer made it better.

  • Awful

by Alamea on 12/13/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 1 out of 5

First half had maybe 3 min of ballet dancing. It was mostly kids prancing around on stage. Some ballet dancing second half but lack of talent in most dancers, synchronization issues as well. Orchestra did a good job. Venue was excellent. Carolina Ballet does not have enough talent for a DPAC performance. Not worth $100 per ticket.

The orchestra was phenomenal and the theatre itself is lovely but there were a few issues. The evening started on a tense note because the security was stopping everyone to take their purses back to the car. Many individuals, including myself, were very frustrated to not have that information before arriving and those who arrived by uber or lyft had no options and were turned away. As for the production, the older dancers were great. There were several stand out "wow" moments. But, the majority of the production felt a bit school recital-ish. For the cost, it was reasonable. But, given that we drove 2 hours to get there, between the security and the level of performance, I likely wouldn't go next year.

  • Not Very Good!

    by Jag65 on 12/13/22Beau Rivage Theatre - BiloxiRating: 2 out of 5

The show was was not really that good at all. Certain performers were good at what they did but for the most part the dancers were not in sync and just not that good. The show after a quarter of the way through had to be restarted due to technical problems. They started it back from the beginning and I just had to cringe thinking I had to watch it all again. I felt like I was watching a local children’s dance academy show for young children. It was not at all worth the money.

  • Shimmy- shake

by Deezee on 12/13/22Emens Auditorium - MuncieRating: 3 out of 5

My daughter and i attended the performance and decided we didn't care too much for the updated version of the Nutcracker. We would have preferred traditional ballet. While the music was awesome yhe choreography was terrible in many of the numbers. There was entirely too much shoulder shimmy shaking and hip thrusting. It really seemed inappropriate given that the kids from Burris Labratory School attended a performance on Fridsy and many of the kids and teachers remarked that it seemed inappropriate. Something must be wrong if young kids are of that opinion. So it was not a wasted afternoon because of the music, but give me the old-fashioned traditional ballet.

  • Fantastic

by Etti on 12/13/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Enjoyable, entertaining and very well done! The sets were outstanding and the dancers were a joy to watch. The dancing coupled with the orchestra’s playing made it a lovely, memorable experience. Kudos to all.

  • Disappointed

by Tee on 12/13/22Beau Rivage Theatre - BiloxiRating: 2 out of 5

It started 30 minutes late. The lady came out & repeated herself telling us everything twice. Then they started over. Then at intermission we thought it was over. Nobody told us anything. We found out when we were walking out of the door. It wasn’t professional at all.

  • Excellent!

Amazing performance! Loved the local take on this classic!

  • Awesome

by LizZard on 12/12/22California Theatre of the Performing Arts - San BernardinoRating: 4 out of 5

Besides one of the attendants not helping me at the entrance when I asked, the show was great. The seats werent entirely accurate either, but it worked out. This venue is small enough to have great seats everywhere. About half of the prople dressed really nice, of course my group of 6 did. My 15yr old enjoyed show. Advice with this venue, dont sit behind a man, otherwise you cant see. I missed the 1st half because i couldnt see.

  • Familiy Tradition

by SAF on 12/12/22DECC Symphony Hall - DuluthRating: 4 out of 5

We have been attending The Nutcracker for many years. We love it! It is a family tradition. The dancers are amazing and the beautiful music by the orchestra puts us in the holiday spirit. While I do love The Nutcracker - The Duluth Tale, there is something that is missing from the original Nutcracker. We miss the original version and hope that it is brought back.
