    The 2pm performance

by shibamama on 12/25/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

The production itself was amazing: setting, costuming, orchestra, and of course, the choreography. The only thing that kept it from getting 5 stars was the audience. People around me were rude and oblivious to others sitting nearby. The girl on my right texted throughout the entire first half, every 3-5 minutes. I think it would have been better if she had used a flashlight to read a book, instead of the periodic blinking on and off of her cell phone light. I did speak to her during the intermission, and, thank goodness, she kept her phone off for the remainder of the performance. Unfortunately, that wasn't the only distraction for me. The man sitting directly in front of me was very tall, which wouldn't have been too bad were it not for his female companion. She kept placing her head on his shoulder, which prompted him to lean his head toward her, partially blocking my view. I had a great view of his right ear lobe, and their periodic kisses. This went on during the entire performance.

Nutcracker by Ballet Hawaii exceeded expectations

by LisaMililani on 12/24/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I took my 5 year old daughter to see the Nutcracker as it was the first time for us both. It exceeded my expectations! The dancers, the stage, and the orchestra were all wonderful! The costumes were beautiful. It was a magical evening.

    Nutcracker is a winner

by barefootnative on 12/24/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

The amazing abilities of the human body are on display as the dancers brilliantly execute fluid movement in this classic ballet. Definitely one to watch this season.

    Ballet Hawaii THE Nutcracker

by pointmutation on 12/24/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Our family attends every year to see the children. In the end, we marvel at the choreography, the guest artists, and Ballet Hawaii Ensemble! The return of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra was thrilling! And as always the staging by Pamela Taylor Tong, showcasing the lovely hardworking kids makes this magical. I admit, I was looking forward to the overly air conditioned auditorium this year, with the heat and muggy weather. I could see the audience members who were attending for their first time were taken by surprise by the chill, and getting wrapped up in borrowed tuxedo jackets - brrr. LILYAN VIGO-ELLIS as the Snow Queen and MEGAN FAIRCHILD as the Sugar Plum Fairy are perfection. Thank you Dr. McNamee for your charming solo year after year!

It was great! The performance is pretty much the same every year but the additional special guests were a delight!

    An absolute treat!

by msklbright on 11/16/12Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Firstly, my four-year old daughter had no idea we were going to the ballet; she thought we were getting ice cream, but questioned why we dressed so fancily -- her in a dress and I in a suit -- and drove into the city. Upon entering the concert hall, her thoughts turned to watching a movie, as there was a giant red curtain and lot of comfortable seats. She convinced herself we were there to see 'The Lorax' again. Once the ballet began, she turned to me and asked why everyone was dancing about the stage. My reply was we were at the ballet -- something she had merely seen a bit of on Sesame Street, etc. and mimicked every chance she could get. Needless to say, her face lit up at my reply that we were not only at the ballet, but were viewing a production of 'The Nutcracker'. Though the last time I saw 'The Nutcracker' performed live was in 1992 at the National Ballet, this production was a real treat, especially watching with my daughter. To my eye not one dancer was off their mark that Sunday afternoon. The production went beautifully. Following the show, while waiting for our car on the lawn outside, she danced about the fallen leaves and flower petals pretending to be Clara; twirling in the sun. Lessons at Ballet Hawaii will hopefully be one of her Christmas gifts this year. Of note: I do recommend pre-paying for the valet service here on Ticket Master. Though it cost $20, it was much quicker and easier to get in and out of the arena with that service than to fight for parking in the over-crowded $6 lots or try to find parking on the streets near Waikiki and the shopping district.

A lovely combination of young and mature dancers

by DanHonolulu on 11/14/12Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

All in all, I had a good time and I enjoyed the adorable children dancers, the good professional guest dancers, the beautiful set decorations, and of course Tchaikovsky's music, although it was tape recorded and not live...

    The Nutcracker, always amazing

by mauigirl808 on 11/13/12Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I have been going to see this ballet by Ballet Hawaiʻi since I was 5 and it is always the perfect way to bring the Christmas cheer. Megan Fairchild blew me away. She is exactly what inspires every little girl to be a beautiful ballerina when they grow up. I loved it.

    Ballet Hawaii's Nutcracker shines!

by loinsuabun on 11/13/12Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I was very impressed with Ballet Hawaii pulling off such a fantastic show so early in the holiday season! The student dancers were polished and strong and, of course, the professionals were flawless. I was pleased and impressed by the new choreography in the doll scene in the first act, the Arabian couple in the second act, and the Chinese dance in the second act. I was especially impressed with Sterling Hyltin cast as the Dew Drop Fairy because the Dew Drop is normally a soloist, not a principal dancer. She was a real treat! The star pairing, Megan Fairchild and Joaquin Deluz were flawless as usual (they have been in this production for quite a number of years). I was also impressed by the two Chinese side girls, who were student dancers. I am glad that their parts were more featured than in previous years. Ballet Hawaii's Nutcracker always warms my heart and gets me in the mood for Christmas (even though this year it had to be before Thanksgiving). :)

although i like the idea of putting AS MANY children on stage as you can, it did make the performance seem unprofessional and uncoordinated. The dancers were not synchronized at all. As a dancer, I know that I am picker than other people. Plus, I've never seen it before so I don't know if this is how it is usually done. It was good... but it could have been better I feel.

Ballet Hawaii amazes again! Forget valet parking

by whiteginger on 11/12/12Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Ballet Hawaii continues to bring Honolulu audiences spectacular performances. The high quality of the visiting dancers from the nation's top companies was over the top this year. Ballet Hawaii students added to the charm. But if you are offered the "valet parking" option thinking it will make things easier, don't bother. The special parking is costly and less convenient than doing it yourself and a lot farther away from the concert hall.

    Nutcracker

by Bluesky1234 on 11/11/12Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I was very disappointed because there were many children played and very amateur. They should not dance yet at the stage. Plus $75 seating was not agreed to pay for. Sorry about negative comment. I went to watch natcracker in Escondido in California was best things ever and beautiful ballet dancers. I thought ballet was just like the performance. No live music was sad.
