About

The Neil Simon Plays - Two of Broadway's best-loved masterpieces  from America's most treasured playwright, BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS and BROADWAY BOUND will be playing in repertory at the Nederlander Theatre.  Please note that a separate ticket must be purchased for EACH production.

BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS and BROADWAY BOUND were two of the longest running Broadway plays of the 1980s.  The works ushered in a new era of appreciation for Neil Simon, with praise for the playwright's hilarious and poignant account of his adolescence, early career and family life in New York in the 1930s and 1940s.

BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS
centers on young Jewish teen Eugene Morris Jerome and his extended family living in a crowded home in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn in 1937: his overworked father, Jack; overbearing mother, Kate; his older brother Stanley; Kate's widowed sister Blanche and her daughters, Nora and Laurie.  As Eugene spends his time daydreaming about a baseball career, he must also cope with his family's troubles, his awkward discovery of the opposite sex and his developing identity as a writer.

BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS
stars Laurie Metcalf (Kate Jerome) and Dennis Boutsikaris (Jack Jerome) with Santino Fontana (Stanley Jerome), Jessica Hecht (Blanche), Gracie Bea Lawrence (Laurie), Noah Robbins (Eugene Jerome) and Alexandra Socha (Nora).
BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS originally opened on March 27, 1983 at the Alvin Theatre and played for 1,299 performances.  (During the run of BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS, the Alvin Theatre was renamed The Neil Simon Theatre).

    super great

by greeetings on 10/18/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Superb acting...we sat in the mezzanine, which was ideal since the set has 2 floors and we were able to see way back into the 2nd floor. I'm not sure if front rows of the orchestra would get the same vantage point. All the actors were dynamite. I've seen all the Neil Simon plays over the years, and I will definitely say that this production was the best. I'm anxious to see Broadway Bound.

    Delightful!

by dccesq on 10/18/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Memoirs was a surprise delite! The comic value was not lost in this reprisal. Laurie Metcalf was as always extaordinary! Hecht as Blanche was believable and a perfect fit. She did the role proud. Eugene was a hit! He brought gestures, tone and color to the role that translated well thru all ages. He truly made this proformance memorable. The Dad was bold and enjoyable. He gave you that warm fuzzy feel. Metcalf played the Jewish mother incredibly. I thoroughly enjoyed and am going back for Broadway Bound!

    Still Great!

by PhotographyBuff on 10/17/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Saw Brighton Beach Memoirs with Matthew Broderick as the lead in the '80s. This ensemble cast is just as good. I was concerned that Noah Robbins as the Young Eugene might suffer in comparison but he makes the role his own. Laurie Metcalf (the only "known" entity in the cast) is truly outstanding as the mom but the other actors play their respective roles to perfection, particularly in the characters of Blanche and Stanley. Our group consisted of male and femaie audience members age 16-65 and we all loved the show.

    Great show-very funny

by bertopitbull on 10/17/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Play was very funny and acting was very realistic. Eugene did an amazing job and had us laughing the entire time. If you are a fan of the movie you will really enjoy this play. Seats in the theater are a little tight but that was the only complaint of the night.

Brighton Beach Memoirs better than the original!

by JVDM on 10/17/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Almost every person in this play was pitch-perfect. From the incomparable Laurie Metcalf 's Kate, to the superb Noah Robbins as Eugene, this production hit harder and was more compelling than the 1983 original. Don't get me wrong - I loved loved loved Matthew Broderick and Elizabeth Franz in Gene Saks production, but David Cromer has made every element of this family more believable. Dennis Boutsikaris carries the weight of his burden as if there is an extra hundred pounds on his shoulders. Jessica Hecht's Blanche makes my heart ache for her dilemma, and her inability to be decisive enough to get out of it. Santino Fontana seems as if he stepped out of a time machine from 1937 and creates a character arc that, along with the rest of the cast provides an object lesson on family values that the political crazies who have co-opted the term should be forced to watch. The only disappointment, and it's slight, is that Alexandra Socha, playing Nora, falters a bit in her final confrontation with Laurie Metcalf's Kate. It's early in the previews, and I'll bet they work it out. A word on Eugene - Noah Robbins character is significantly more identifiably Jewish than Matthew Broderick, and slightly less cloying. I think this makes the whole piece more cohesive. The pacing and build of the scenes was masterfully handled by Cromer, whose star has risen to the top rank of American directors. One other slight issue. At the performance I saw, after the curtain call, the show curtain whacked several of the performers in the head on its way down. Hope they solve that problem!

    Enjoyable pre-opening performance

by Anonymous on 10/15/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Noah Robbins as Eugene showed great comedic timing for such a young actor and really made this pre-opening production enjoyable. The cast seemed to enjoy the play and broke-up laughing several times at their own jokes, which for me was a first as I had never attended a pre-opening production before. Jessica Hecht as Blanche was great. Terrific interaction with all the family members. Worth seeing.

    An Average Performance

by J126 on 10/15/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

It was a preview, so maybe the cast is still working to get it right, but the performance was not a memorable one.

Brighton Beach Memoirs was so funny

by pulle on 10/15/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Play was very funny and the lead character, Noah Robbins, was excellent. I had never seen him on stage before. The rest of the cast was also excelelnt and very believable. I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon at the theater, though I saw the play in previews.

A Wonderful Return for the Jerome Family

by Oconnari on 10/15/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

I purchased tickets for "Brighton Beach Memoirs" thanks to a heads-up from the Ticketmaster listserv. Long a fan of the play, I jumped at the opportunity and purchased tickets for my husband and I to attend the first night of previews. We had such a wonderful time, we immediately recommended the play to family; my brother and his wife went last week and my grandmother and great aunt attended last night, and my parents are looking to buy tickets as well. I cannot really offer a greater recommendation than that -- family members of all ages really enjoyed the show. The cast is fantastic -- particularly Laurie Metcalf (Kate) and Santino Fontana (Stanley). Bottom line: Neil Simon is as funny and relevant as ever.

    Heartwarming through the generations!

by sats on 10/15/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

From the moment the curtain opened, it was evident that Brighton Beach Memoirs was a winner, once again. Humor, laughter, poignant moments and defineable coming of age scenes marked the brilliant casting of this beloved production. I attended with my elderly parents and young daughter, each thoroughly delighted with the play. Bravo to a fine performance by Noah Robbins as Eugene, which touched the buttons of audience members with his comedic timing, voice inflection and delightful performance. Laurie Metcalf captured the mother we all can relate to. Kudos for bringing back such a beloved show!.

Brighton Beach Memoirs is an American story.

by yandi on 10/11/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

For those who visit NYC once in a lifetime and see one show, this should be it. Brighton is a slice of Americana. Skip The Lion King and all the other Disney "not made for the stage" musicals. This is a true Broadway experience that even the less saavy theatre goer can appreciate and enjoy.

A wonderful production of one of Neil Simon's best play. From start to finish it was perfection: Actors, direction, design - all beautifully blended. It's one of my favorite plays and this was the best production ever

    Brighton Beach Memoirs a Hit!!

by artistk on 10/10/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

After seeing Matthew Brodderick play Eugene, I was a little worried that I would be disappointed with the revival. However, I was thoroughly delighted with the production and especially with Noah Robbins. He was terrific! I would have given the play 5 stars, but there were several miscues and stumbles in dialog.
