About

The Neil Simon Plays - Two of Broadway's best-loved masterpieces  from America's most treasured playwright, BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS and BROADWAY BOUND will be playing in repertory at the Nederlander Theatre.  Please note that a separate ticket must be purchased for EACH production.

BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS and BROADWAY BOUND were two of the longest running Broadway plays of the 1980s.  The works ushered in a new era of appreciation for Neil Simon, with praise for the playwright's hilarious and poignant account of his adolescence, early career and family life in New York in the 1930s and 1940s.

BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS
centers on young Jewish teen Eugene Morris Jerome and his extended family living in a crowded home in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn in 1937: his overworked father, Jack; overbearing mother, Kate; his older brother Stanley; Kate's widowed sister Blanche and her daughters, Nora and Laurie.  As Eugene spends his time daydreaming about a baseball career, he must also cope with his family's troubles, his awkward discovery of the opposite sex and his developing identity as a writer.

BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS
stars Laurie Metcalf (Kate Jerome) and Dennis Boutsikaris (Jack Jerome) with Santino Fontana (Stanley Jerome), Jessica Hecht (Blanche), Gracie Bea Lawrence (Laurie), Noah Robbins (Eugene Jerome) and Alexandra Socha (Nora).
BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS originally opened on March 27, 1983 at the Alvin Theatre and played for 1,299 performances.  (During the run of BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS, the Alvin Theatre was renamed The Neil Simon Theatre).

Brighton Beach Memoirs even better 2nd time around

by SHMag on 10/9/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Amazing performances by all, but especially Laurie Metcalf as the mother (Kate) and Noah Robbins as young Eugene Jerome in his Broadway debut, made for a most fun afternoon. Loved the entire performance and I'm not even Jewish!

    Brighton Beach Memoirs

It was an very fine and funny show in its time...but its time has passed. Well acted and some funny lines. No compelling reason to do this revival.

    Fabulous debut for Noah Robbins

by Robin11 on 10/9/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Spot on recreation of late-thirties Brooklyn. Wry and moving family comedy. Noah Robbins in Broadway debut stole the show as 15 year old Eugene Morris Jerome, aspiring writer. Set was amazing.

The acting in this show was extremley professional and good. If you either like Neil Simon or lived in Brooklyn and went to Brighton Beach, a must see. Teens and above also a must see if parents from Brooklyn.

    Thoroughly enjoyed "Brighton Beach Memoirs"

by Ndstar on 10/8/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

"Brighton Beach Memoirs" is terrific. Noah Robbins does a superb job....great Broadway debut! Dennis Boutsikaris is perfect as the wise but realistic patriarch. The whole cast works well. Only criticism is that on occasion, lines aren't spoken clearly enough.

I truly enjoyed revisiting Brighton Beach Memoirs.I was reminded about the brilliance of Neil Simon's writing and how an excellent cast can enrich the writing .I was particularly impressed by Noah Robbins, making his broadway debut, and Santino Fontana, who excelled in Billy Elliott. It was an enjoyable evening.I can't wait to revisit Broadway Bound.

    brighton beach memoirs so-so memorable!

by bronxgrandma on 10/8/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

i would recommend this with hesitations, funny but not side-splitting, you really have to be Jewish to appreciate this and i would say over 40 or so. second act better than first. the acting was very good!

    Brighton Beach Memoirs

by Rags555 on 10/7/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

I saw the play about 20 years ago on Broadway and loved it. The current production is just as good. There were many laughs but also many touching moments. The relationship between the family was wonderful and definately stood the test of time. I will definately recommend it to my friends.

    BBM a HIT again

by broadwaysablast on 10/6/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

There were parts of a few lines that we missed, but overall even though we were in the rear mezzanine, you could see and hear well. The young Jerome brother stole the show.......terrific comedic timing with his delivery. We enjoyed all the characters. The running joke about going to the grocer was priceless.

    brighton beach memoir

by schlemiel on 10/5/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

The show was very well done and was true to the original. Young eugene w very well done and very funny. I had seen the original production and I believe this was a notch above that. It showed the true love of a family faced with untold number of problems. We now live in Syracuse so each trip broadway becomes a special event.

    a real story

by papa520 on 10/4/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

A real story about real people. If you grew up during the depression or lived in a home of depression parents then this show will resonate. Laurie and Dennis perform at a level that can only be described as Tony Award quality, actually the whole cast is there. Did I mention that I saw the first preview; so you can imagine what the show will look by opening night. Neil Simon is a master of the word for the stage and the screen, none better. With the cast that stands on that stage and the words of Mr Simon a wonderful evening at the theater is yours.

You laugh a lot and cry a little

by Sweet1234 on 10/4/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

The play is about family values - about members of families staying together and working together despite any bad times - the play's setting is in New York City in the late 30s during the depression and before WWII in a Jewish and Irish neighborhood, but could be today with members of families out of work because of the current high unemployment. All the performances were superb.... another Neil Simon hit!

The play was very well cast, the best being Jerome and his mother. Far better than I had expected.

Brighton Beach Memoirs did not disappoint at all! The casting was perfect. The actors were all excellent for the roles in which they were cast. They play moved right along, and I was sorry to see it end. I would recommend anyone see this play.

Very enjoyable, will go to the sequel

by Bobae on 10/3/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Brighton Beach Memoirs was very well performed, there was a pretty full house, I like the time and setting of the play, its before my lifetime but easily understandable, my parents lived then. Very funny and a good image of the times portrayed, must have been more provocative when it first came out in the 1980s. Set is amazing with a whole house opened on one side like a doll house and action happening in all the rooms. Will be very glad to see the sequel in about a month.

The first act was better than the first. Very funny. Most of the actors were excellent. However, they all sounded like they came from Boston. They were probably trying to sound like Brooklyn accents, but they failed miserably. The sets were great!!
