About

The Neil Simon Plays - Two of Broadway's best-loved masterpieces  from America's most treasured playwright, BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS and BROADWAY BOUND will be playing in repertory at the Nederlander Theatre.  Please note that a separate ticket must be purchased for EACH production.

BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS and BROADWAY BOUND were two of the longest running Broadway plays of the 1980s.  The works ushered in a new era of appreciation for Neil Simon, with praise for the playwright's hilarious and poignant account of his adolescence, early career and family life in New York in the 1930s and 1940s.

BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS
centers on young Jewish teen Eugene Morris Jerome and his extended family living in a crowded home in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn in 1937: his overworked father, Jack; overbearing mother, Kate; his older brother Stanley; Kate's widowed sister Blanche and her daughters, Nora and Laurie.  As Eugene spends his time daydreaming about a baseball career, he must also cope with his family's troubles, his awkward discovery of the opposite sex and his developing identity as a writer.

BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS
stars Laurie Metcalf (Kate Jerome) and Dennis Boutsikaris (Jack Jerome) with Santino Fontana (Stanley Jerome), Jessica Hecht (Blanche), Gracie Bea Lawrence (Laurie), Noah Robbins (Eugene Jerome) and Alexandra Socha (Nora).
BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS originally opened on March 27, 1983 at the Alvin Theatre and played for 1,299 performances.  (During the run of BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS, the Alvin Theatre was renamed The Neil Simon Theatre).

    Brighton Beach Memoirs was wonderful!

by BigTimmie on 11/1/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

The play seems timeless. We saw it 22 years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed the revival last night. The cast was great. For a baby boomer, and older a wonderful way to spend an evening. or matinee.

This play was extraordinary! The cast was phenomenal!!! The set reminded me of the "good old days" and took me back even though it was a little before my time. I laughed and laughed but felt some sadness, too. This story is what family is all about. I thoroughly enjoyed it as did everyone around me. A MUST SEE!!!!

    Brighton Beach revival is memorable

by SHSAM on 10/24/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

The revival of Brighton Beach Memoirs was directed beautifully by David Cromer. This brilliant ensemble of actors created the world of this Jewish family, facing the economic uncertainty of pre-World War II America--and the complex family relationships beautifully. Laurie Metcalf brought back her Steppenwolf roots (even though she is best known for the Roseanne Show) in a moving and deeply rounded realistic performance of Kate, that should earn her a Tony nomination. Jessica Hecht's performance of Blanche was delightfully quirky and also deeply real. The rest of the cast was terrific in this show that focused on character and circumstances and never aimed for the Simon laughs. As a result the comedy was there, but the portrayals were sensitive and emotionally powerful.

    Warmth generated at the Nederlander

by Anonymous on 10/22/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

Brighton Beach Memoirs is a well written play by Neil Simon which evokes memories from his early chldhood which took place just before the second World War in Brighton Beach Brooklyn. The play has a multitude of finely defined characters whose acting expertise are well defined by strong performances. Most notably is a very moving performance by Laurie Metcalf as the matriarch of the family and Dennis Boutsikaris as her husband Jack Jerome. Santino Fontana as the older brother is quite effective as the confidant and advisor to his younger brother Eugene Morris Jerome. Noah Robbins plays the young Eugene Morris Jerome, originally played by Matthew Broderick. He plays the role convincingly and with the right comedic edge required. Brighton Beach Memoirs is a lovely portrait of a family during a more innocent time. It is a most welcome addition to the Great White Way. Go and enjoy.

    Brighton Beach Memoirs

by dgreviews on 10/22/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

I know the stage play and the movie, so this was not new to me. The microphone levels need boosting, especially for "Laurie". The younger actors, particularly "Nora", have to stop rushing their lines. I understand this is the purpose of previews and it could be corrected with a direction of slightly slower pacing. You can't go wrong with Neil Simon. Enjoy!

A Fine Day at the Beach!

by DianeJH on 10/18/09Nederlander Theatre - New York

We really enjoyed our day at Brighton Beach!. The amazing set design and lighting allowed playgoers to feel like they were really witnessing the intimate moments in the lives of the Jerome family. Noah Robbin was incredible--he WAS Eugene Morris Jerome! In fact, his performance was that of a seasoned professional (great comedic flair and timing), despite this being his first time on Broadway. Other standouts included Santino Fontana as Eugene's brother, Stanley and Dennis Boutsitkaris as his father, Jack.
