About

After five years away, The Neighbourhood return with (((((ultraSOUND))))) - a record that feels less like a comeback than a renewal. The California band that defined black-and-white pop melancholy in the 2010s has found color again, or at least shades of it.

Recorded first at Conway Studios in Los Angeles with longtime collaborator Justyn Pilbrow, then finished in a cramped Van Nuys rehearsal space called The Beehive with Jono Dorr producing, (((((ultraSOUND))))) captures Jesse Rutherford, Zach Abels, Jeremy Freedman, Mikey Margott, and Brandon Fried reconnecting after a three-year hiatus. "We didn't have to make this record," Abels says. "We came back because we wanted to. It was like being in the garage again -  fun and not so controlled."

Without a label deadline or anyone looking over their shoulders, the sessions unfolded naturally. "There was no one telling us we had to do it," Fried says. "We were self-governing for the first time - no label, no contract, just us deciding to make music again."

Across fifteen tracks, the band strips back the gloss and trusts feeling over flash. "Private" - the song that gives the album its name - folds self-examination into a hypnotic pulse. "Sometimes I didn't have the words," Rutherford says. "You'd need an ultrasound to see what I was feeling - to look inside and go, oh, that's what's happening."

Grey - the color they once rejected - runs through (((((ultraSOUND))))) like a quiet revelation. They even wrote "No Grey" back in 2013 as a declaration of absolutes. Now the shade shows up in the artwork and in several songs, a metaphor for nuance and growth. "Everything used to be black and white," Rutherford says. "Now it's grey."

(((((ultraSOUND))))) sounds like a band with nothing to prove and everything to say - five musicians rediscovering the balance between control and chaos that made them matter in the first place.

  • Awful

This was quite possibly the worst band I’ve ever seen live, Well besides ‘no doubt.’ I’m not sure if it was the venue or the band itself, but the music was so loud and so distorted I couldn’t even make out one song that was popular by the band. In fact it was almost as if the band wanted to make everyone lose their hearing because they turn the sound system so loud it would make your ears bleed. I’ve been to drop kick Murphy’s shows and this was much louder...quite possibly the worst band I’ve ever seen life. I’m not sure if it was the venue for the band itself but the music was so loud and so distorted I couldn’t even make out one song that was popular by the band. In fact it was almost as if the band wanted to make everyone lose their hearing because they turn the sound system so loud it would make your ears bleed. I’ve been to Dropkick Murphys shows, and this was worse by far. Some bands are just meant to be in a recording studio only and that is definitely the case here.

  • My favorite venue

by DJ on 12/30/19The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

The openers were so great they gained new fans in my friends and I. The venue as always was clean with friendly staff. It was the first time my friends and I were all over 21 and drinks/bartenders were great. Overall pleasant experience!

  • Best night ever

by Naomi on 11/18/19The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Solid night. Wasn't the most pumped for two openers but they ended up being dope. The NBHD was stellar though loved everything

  • THE BEST CONCERT

    by S. D. on 11/18/19The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Literally the best concert. I love this band so much and it was amazing to finally see them in person.

  • would see them every day if I could

by Efad on 11/18/19The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Such an amazing concert!!!! Jesse is so interactive, the crowd was amazing, the venue was incredible. My boyfriend and I had been waiting over 5 years to see them (due to schedule conflicts for earlier shows) and it was worth every minute. 10/10 would recommend.

  • Not What I Expected

by Frankie on 11/18/19The Pageant - St LouisRating: 3 out of 5

The venue had seats which was really nice. So we drove 4 hours to go see The Neighbourhood made sure to get there early for really good seats. Everything was going great until these teenaged girls stood right behind us and screamed at the top of their lungs THE WHOLE TIME couldn't hear anything besides that. Screaming pretty sexual things too about the singer. Couldn't get up because they were pinning us in our seats. Was a pretty terrible and annoying experience. Wasn't aware they had such a young fan base. Would have been nice to actually sit and enjoy the music. Still love the band but won't ever go to a live show again.

  • the neighbourhood live in ft lauderdale

by cristina on 11/16/19Revolution Live - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve been waiting 6 years to see them in concert and I was not disappointed. The band sounds almost identical to the studio recording and they get the crowd really hyped up. It was a really fun concert and I miss it a lot. I hope they come down here again soon.

  • Lit as a titty

by Lluvy on 11/15/19The Fillmore Detroit presented by Cricket Wireless - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I had so much fun the Fillmore never fails to disappoint and they came on at a good time considering the two opening acts!

  • Great show but too short

by KJum on 11/14/19EXPRESS LIVE! - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Really enjoyed The Neighbourhood’s show. I love their music. They played so many great songs and had great energy. Lost a star because it took FOREVER to get the show started and then they only played for about an hour. I wish they would’ve started earlier to reduce the huge wait and get more show time. I didn’t love the opening acts. Slow Hollow was fairly boring. Overall a fun time.

  • Row 1 Seat 1

by Taylor on 11/14/19EXPRESS LIVE! - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

For premium seats, I bought the seat row 1 seat 1. That seat gave me a horrible view. I could only see less than 25% of the stage. If it weren’t for the nice people next to me for moving over so I could see more it would have been awful. Express Live needs to do something about that.

  • The best.

    by M. I. on 11/14/19EXPRESS LIVE! - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Truly they’re such performers. Jesse sounds exactly the same live as he does on the album. He has amazing stage presence and so do the rest of his band. Definitely one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.

  • I Miss It

by Suki on 11/14/19EXPRESS LIVE! - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed the concert! I wish The NBHD’s set list was longer but no matter what, Chip Chrome and the Monochromes own my heart & Jesse’s stage presence was amazing. Wait in line wasn’t that long once the doors opened. I could barely hear the openers, especially Claude, but they were nice and I liked their music

  • So so

by Jessi on 11/12/19STAGE AE - PittsburghRating: 3 out of 5

The show was great - I really enjoyed The Neighbourhood and Slow Hollows. My group went upstairs because the downstairs area was packed and filled with teenagers. When we got upstairs I found a nice place to stand and look in between two tables. There were only maybe three tables to sit at for general admission. However, when the Neighbourhood came onstage, groups rushed and crowded in between the tables. It was so bad to the point where the people sitting at the tables had to move because they couldn't see. The staff should have said something to the rude individuals who blocked the views of the other patrons, especially the tables. I paid over $130.00 to hear the band and stare at the back of someone's head. I don't think I would go to the venue again, unless it is for a summer concert maybe.

  • best concert i’ve been to in a while

by sierra on 11/12/19The Fillmore Detroit presented by Cricket Wireless - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

You just can’t take your eyes off the stage nor can you stop dancing. Amazing set and amazing show

  • Love the band and the venue.

Very beautiful venue and always a bar handy, which I appreciate. The band and acoustics were most excellent. Thank You.

  • Absolutely Amazing

by Courtney on 11/12/19The Fillmore Detroit presented by Cricket Wireless - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

They had literally no right to go that hard on that stage. And on top of that their opening acts were fantastic and now I’m fans of them. The Neighbourhood definitely will be seeing me again.

  • Amazing but also aggravating

by Kenzie on 11/12/19The Fillmore Detroit presented by Cricket Wireless - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Me and my boyfriend waited three hours for the neighbourhood to come on and then they only played for not even an hour so that was a little disappointing but they were beautiful and sounded amazing just like i thought They would 😍

  • Disappointing

by LS on 11/11/19STAGE AE - PittsburghRating: 2 out of 5

Love Stage AE and the neighbourhood, but the sucked live. Singer wasn’t with it and completely ruined it for me. Would not see them again.
