About

After five years away, The Neighbourhood return with (((((ultraSOUND))))) - a record that feels less like a comeback than a renewal. The California band that defined black-and-white pop melancholy in the 2010s has found color again, or at least shades of it.

Recorded first at Conway Studios in Los Angeles with longtime collaborator Justyn Pilbrow, then finished in a cramped Van Nuys rehearsal space called The Beehive with Jono Dorr producing, (((((ultraSOUND))))) captures Jesse Rutherford, Zach Abels, Jeremy Freedman, Mikey Margott, and Brandon Fried reconnecting after a three-year hiatus. "We didn't have to make this record," Abels says. "We came back because we wanted to. It was like being in the garage again -  fun and not so controlled."

Without a label deadline or anyone looking over their shoulders, the sessions unfolded naturally. "There was no one telling us we had to do it," Fried says. "We were self-governing for the first time - no label, no contract, just us deciding to make music again."

Across fifteen tracks, the band strips back the gloss and trusts feeling over flash. "Private" - the song that gives the album its name - folds self-examination into a hypnotic pulse. "Sometimes I didn't have the words," Rutherford says. "You'd need an ultrasound to see what I was feeling - to look inside and go, oh, that's what's happening."

Grey - the color they once rejected - runs through (((((ultraSOUND))))) like a quiet revelation. They even wrote "No Grey" back in 2013 as a declaration of absolutes. Now the shade shows up in the artwork and in several songs, a metaphor for nuance and growth. "Everything used to be black and white," Rutherford says. "Now it's grey."

(((((ultraSOUND))))) sounds like a band with nothing to prove and everything to say - five musicians rediscovering the balance between control and chaos that made them matter in the first place.

by Ernie on 10/12/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The show was terrific! Performances were great! However the issues I have had to do with outside the venue which was parking. The parking situation was horrendous and took forever to get a spot. I would love to see the venue focus on having accessible and easier parking.

  • Beautiful and so grateful

by Jocelyn on 10/12/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

the boys did sooo good! Jesse’s voice sounded exactly like the recorded versions. I was so in awe the entire time because of how amazing it was. We felt the speakers through our bodies, so it was badass. Only thing is i wished they interacted with the fans more. I do want to see them again!

The NBHD is always amazing live. They played a great show at the Hollywood Bowl! I’ve been at this venue a handful of times and always enjoy it. 10/10

  • Terrible

There was no parking anywhere and kept sending people in circles. I didn’t even go and they won’t get me a refund!

  • No direction to get in

by Nanncyfann on 10/12/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

The CONCERT was amazing!!! The neighbourhood never disappoints!!! However I have it a 4 because to get into the venue was horrendous. People were going in late because there was no parking anywhere. Officials were not guiding traffic so it delayed entry times and made unnecessary traffic. We had to park by the Hollywood mall which was about a mile away. I’ve been to this venue before and it was never like this. Doesn’t help that all the parking sold out within an hour to this concert selling. I will think again when going back to this venue which looks like a low probability.

  • Horrible parking, low energy concert

by Carloff on 10/12/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

We missed over half of the concert due to the horrible parking situation. There was no traffic control and they ran out of parking. We had to park 15 mins away after we couldn’t get it. Once we got in, the energy level at the concert was so low. The band was definitely not the same as they used to be. Disappointed.

  • Disappointing

by Fawn on 10/12/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

Parking in lot b is horrible! They stack cars begins each other. All the cars parked in front of us, owners didn’t come so we were stuck there for about an hour. Luckily the cars behind us were gone so we were able to reverse and leave that way. The audio at the bowl sucks! We can barely hear the band, the neighbourhood. What made it worse was people around us was singing so loud! I didn’t pay to hear you guys karaoke! Seating are benches and uncomfortable. And people were taking up a lot of room. Luckily the seats next to us was empty. Will not returning to this venue.

  • Best show Ever!

by David on 10/12/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I have never been to a concert that’s filled with great people and such amazing energy! Jesse killed it on stage and is truly a superstar! I would really want to see them again!

  • So good!

Definitely get close seats! Jesse sounds so good live and I will go again to see them!

  • Good Venue but sky high prices

by Michael on 10/12/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

The venue was good a size and able to see the show good. We were right above the box seats and it works out perfect. Now the prices of drinks were fairly high. We bought two drinks that should have cost $10 each but were $40. A small water bottle cost $8. I would just recommend lowering that price.

  • Stargazing at the bowl

by Jessi on 10/12/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Best performance ever! All their songs sound better live. Will definitely see them again! Just valet for parking.

  • Didn’t even get to park

by Ale on 10/12/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 1 out of 5

The parking set up was an absolute nightmare. Didn’t even get to see the show so it was such a waste of money. The Hollywood bowl is literally the worst venue on a Saturday night. 0/10 would not recommend.

It was the best experience of my life . It was a pleasure to be there to see my favorite band perform on such a beautiful night. I seen 6 falling stars during the performance and it simply felt meant to be .

  • The fillmore is always overpacked.

by Madi on 4/21/20The Fillmore Detroit presented by Cricket Wireless - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

My issue is with the venue not the actual overall concert, I’ve been to the fillmore in Detroit about 6-7 times and they always over pack the floor. You can barely move & most people are stuck walking around by the bar in the back and care barely see the stage and god forbid you actually find a good spot to stand because another concertgoer is going to shove you as hard as possible to take your spot no matter what, no matter who’s playing. Even if you’re against the guard rails on the stairs, I had a red mark from that for about 3 days after going because THEY OVER PACK. Sure you could fit like 2,900 but that’s with every person standing front to back with someone’s business pressed against you because no one can move.
