    i would recommend with reservations

by northernk on 10/24/11Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

You cannot relive the past, but you can get an idea of what it was like, maybe. I was great to see the original Genesis staging and slide show yes. Probably only chance one will ever get to witness that part, and since the slide show only worked properly at maybe 4 or 5 shows on the Genesis tour of 1974 and 1975, here was a chance to see it actually work correctly. However, i wonder if the technology used to make the slide show actually work properly now could of been added to the sound and other visuals, It wasn't so the whole thing looks dated at times, which of course it is. The encores were wonderful and seeing the original staging for Watcher of the Skies and Musical Box were nice. It's a wonderful attempt with Genesis and Gabriel's apparent blessing to recreate the past but one maybe can't go back again i don't know, not without the chemistry of the original members of the original band, as good as the attempt by the current players, it leaves one emotionally short. Go see it once if you were a fan to see a glimpse of the past, but hope that someday more film of the original tour could be found.

    Not the Rael thing, but......

by Bobthenob on 10/24/11Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

So, The Musical Box, the band, not the song; although, they DID cover that particular track in an encore. This is not so much a tribute band, as it is a faithful recreation of an event, a very big event in the prog community of the mid-70's I might add. These guys have been at this for 15 years.....longer, by about 8 years, than the Gabriel incarnation of this group, and it shows. The attention to detail, the faithful recreation of the costuming and staging shows the respect and admiration these cats have for the originals. The music was spot on....the guitarist, in particular, was amazing, and Steve Hackett is not one I would care to cover, but he did it with skill. The singer has the mannerisms and idiosynchracies of PG down.....even in his patter between songs. I was at the original in 75 at The Shrine, as well as The Roxy, and Santa Monica Civic gigs the previous coupla years, and this is as close as your gonna get to seeing a true event in rock music. All in all.....highly recommended!

    Old Genesis Revived

    by stanmur2011 on 10/24/11Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

Music was incredbily similar to old Genesis sound, although vocals off a bit and bass too distorted.

    Musical Box is Awesome !

by jdmesaaz on 10/24/11Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

I had seen these guys like 10 years ago do Selling England, and it was amazing... The Lamb mightt be even better. Their attention to all the details is incredible, and results in a recreation where the sound is like off the record...

    More lifelike than reality

by Lucid801 on 10/24/11Club Nokia - Los Angeles

This performance was filled with ecstasy for me! Oh, come on you know what I mean! Like a large part of the audience, I am a grissly 56-year old guy who formed a massive bond with Genesis in the 70's. I'm very familiar with the music and have ruined more copies of the Lamb by dropping the original vinyl on the turntable out of enthusiasm and rushing to get to side 4! I had high expectations for this concert and was ecstatically pleased with it! How risky is putting on something like this that can end up being dated and hackneyed? Perhaps for the unfamiliar, the choreography/performance by a Peter Gabriel of the 70's doesn't withstand the sophistication of a jaded media savvy contemporary audience. But that was certainly not the case this night. Movement and musicianship were overwhelmingly, painstakingly and lovingly reviving this seminal rock opera for mostly old eyes ready to appreciate. I was enthralled over and over by the attention to detail and heart invested in the music. More so as the members of The Musical Box are as young as those dudes of Genesis of 1974. Where do these guys get the passion for something relatively anachronistic? I don't care how but they are passionate and we are the beneficiaries! I am seeing this again in Chicago this November almost by accident and can hardly wait. By comparison I am hoping for a slightly different an louder vocal mix. There is no reason to hide the lead singer's so-very-Gabriel-like voice. More please! Aside from that, the mix and sound was magnificent in this terrific venue. I haven't heard sound as good since the Hollywood House of Blues. Excellent acoustics and reinforcement.

    Excelllent Recreation

by JamesV on 10/24/11Club Nokia - Los Angeles

As someone who saw the original in 1975 I can say that the show was very well done. Stage was a little small for some things, but overall the music was excellent. Especially the guitars and singer. Very hard to duplicate Phil Collins...one of the greatest drummers of all time.

"Musical Box" is a must for any Genesis fan. I really felt like it was 1975. The attention to detail is amazing and the musicians are top notch.

You would be foolish not to see this show!!!

by Slubberdegullion on 10/24/11Orpheum Theater - Phoenix

VERY INTENSE!!!! If you are truly a fan of early Genesis, you cannot afford to miss this show. Even if you're not a Genesis fan, this show will blow you away. I brought a friend who had never heard of Genesis or Peter Gabriel and he loved it. They were spot on the whole night and it sounded great. There was one minor hiccup during the opening song when the sound cut out for about 5 seconds but after that it was flawless. For those who are wondering, the drummer is right handed this time, but looks just like Phil Collins with the full beard and everything. His voice didn't sound too much like Phil, but his singing role is minor enough to where it didn't affect the show. His drumming was outstanding though. He brought a lot of original flavor to the music much like Phil Collins did live back in the day. His drumming highlight: Watcher of the Skies (2nd encore). The guy who plays Gabriel was phenomenal. Looking back at videos from their tour in 2004/05 I have to say I didn't think the lead singer was too convincing as Gabriel. Maybe he improved or maybe hearing it live sounds different, but he was spot on in Phoenix. He had lots of energy and had Gabriel's mannerisms and "choreographies" down perfectly from those 1975 bootleg videos available on youtube. He sang the studio version but incorporated many of Gabriel's live vocal characteristics into much of the show as well - such as Back in NYC where his voice was obviously strained (just like Gabriel's was) and during Anyway, the line "How wonderful to be....so profound." "From life alone to life as one-ah" (the die-hards know what I am talking about). His monologues sounded just like Gabriel and were almost word for word. Very humorous too. At one point he stopped his monologue to smile and wave at a man who walked up to the front of the stage to take a close up picture with his phone. Though the whole concert was an experience of a lifetime, highlights for me were Back in NYC, Carpet Crawlers (which sounded exactly like Gabriel and Collins), The Waiting Room (very chilling), and of course Colony of Slippermen (seeing that costume in person is crazy). The encores were probably the best part of the show, closing out with Watcher of the Skies and Gabriel in full watcher costume - UV makeup and all. Seeing and hearing this music live is a life-altering experience. The sound just engulfs you. You will never listen to the music the same way again. Throughout the night the bass shook the floor and you could feel the vibrations running through your body. My insides were still shaking when I left the theater. I just saw the greatest concert of my life. GO SEE THIS SHOW! You will not regret it.

    Nailed it

by Tibzee on 10/22/11Club Nokia - Los Angeles

Incredible opportunity to see excellent musicians playing incredibly complex compositions. Peter Gabriel and Genesis can sleep well knowing these guys are doing such an incredible impersonation. I was too young to see this show in 1974, thank you Musical Box for allowing me the privilege in 2011.

    stop complaing

by scottyface on 10/22/11club nokia - Los Angeles

reading a lot of reviews complaing about things like the vocals be drowned out by the music...one guy even commented on "who still uses an ARP synth?"....keep in mind, the goal of this band The Musical Box" is to exactly RECREATE the shows from 1974/75 including all the things that went wrong back then...the ARP, along with the double neck guitar played by "Mike", and the guitar played by "Steve" were all donated original instuments played by the members of Genesis back in "74"...The Musical Box does not want to artificially make the music...in interviews with PG he even said that of all the shows of the Lamb....it only worked all the way through maybe three or four times...he would mess up on words and instruments would have to be tuned in between songs....it's all done on purpose.

    The Musical Box..happy ending

by scottyface on 10/22/11Club Nokia - Los Angeles

bad start for me and my friend, we decided to save the frustration of freeway and parking by taking the metro blue line that goes right to the Nokia..the train had a major meltdown...showed up in the middle of "In The Cage", but quickly got into the show, which of course was amazing..saw "The Musical Box" in La Mirada, where the sound system obviously was not designed for loud rock music..at the club Nokia the sound was great, bass pedels shaking the floor and clear and could clearly hear all of the back up vocals...great band, great show, great venue, except that they were actually throwing people out for filming and taking pics...venues have to stop doing this, with todays technology everything is fair game, it is NOT stealing from the band, as a matter of fact, it helps promote them thru sharing.

Felt like I was seeing what I missed 37 years ago!

by Copasetic on 10/22/11Club Nokia - Los Angeles

These guys nail it! Granted, they're not perfect, a little loose in spots, but I'm also a Genesis snob... They're great musicians (would have to be, this ain't easy stuff), and they've even got the costumes and the mannerisms down to a "t." I've known about The Musical Box for many years; however, just now got the opportunity to go. And, I will now be seeing them whenever I can. I definitely recommend, especially for the casual, "Peter Gabriel was in Genesis?" fan. It's a great opportunity to learn about one of the greatest, but not recognized enough as such, rock bands of our time.

    The Musical Box IS Genesis

by GabbleRatchet on 10/22/11Club Nokia - Los Angeles

Mind boggling reproduction of the entire Lamb Lies Down on Broadway concert, down to the smallest detail. Every hand gesture and note was perfect. Not many people attended, so I hope that's not the last time we see The Musical Box on the West Coast.

A close rendition and master musicianship. But the show had not nearly as much energy as the same one about four years ago. Part of it was the venue, but part was definitely the band this time around.

    Musical Box simply amazing

by jrt4e on 10/20/11The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

For those of us who were not fortunate to actually see Genesis perform their masterpiece "The Lamb" look no further than MB. there are countless bands doing Genesis material and the "Lamb" as well, however nothing will ever compare to MB. seeing this live is absolutely amazing, if you are truly familiar with the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis and you have yet to hear about or see MB then you must see this you will not believe your eyes. This show is so awesome they should have a money back guarantee.

    Unbelieveable

by rockndoc on 10/19/11The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

I've seen Genesis many times when the real band performed starting in 1979 throught the last tour in 2007? Unfortunately, I never saw them with Peter Gabriel as the front man. These guys played like the Genesis we all were brought up on in the 70's without a hitch. Show opened right at 8 o'clock on the dot so don't be late for any future shows. Played the whole Lamb album straight through. If you closed your eyes, you'd think you were back in some London club in 1974 listening to the original band. They even look like the original guys. Only difference is that this drummer is a righty and Phil is a lefty. They used all of the original slides that Genesis used on the original Lamb tour in the background so somettimes you didn't know whether you should watch the cool slides or the musicians. You could tell the slides were dated, but they matched the album perfectly. The costumes that the "new Peter" came out in were a dead on match to the things Gabriel used to do along with the wart outfit and all the other cool stage props. Encore was The Musical Box followed by Watcher of the Skies with "Gabriel" once again in full regalia costume for the last song too.

    Flawless Recreation of 1975

by proghead on 10/19/11The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

I was really blown away by The Musical Box. It was very easy to close my eyes and time travel back to 1975. When I stood up after "It" to shout for an encore, it was really like I was seeing the Gabriel led Genesis of '75. I am so glad that the real Genesis lets these guys do this and I hope that we can clone them so future generations are able to hear this amazing music. Great Show and amazing musicianship by the whole band.
