  • The Musical Box @ The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta

by Oldfatbubba on 7/27/14Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

The Musical Box is a Genesis cover band performing historically accurate reproductions of Genesis concerts. For this show, they turned the clock back to 1973 when Genesis was touring to support their newly-released Selling England by the Pound LP. Clearly, they have spent lots of effort to make the stage, lighting, backgrounds and costumes as authentic as possible. The same can be said for the music. Denis Gagne's voice and onstage mannerism is a dead-ringer for Peter Gabriel. The same can be said for the drummer Marc Laflamme, who played drums like a banshee while sporting the same white overalls that Phil Collins wore during this period. And while he doesn't look like Steve Hackett, Francois Gagon must have studied countless hours of audio and video to learn Steve's parts (flawlessly). As for this particular show, the band received standing ovations after almost every number but seemed tired at times, particularly Denis who was clearly winded during his introductions. This was their 5th show in 6 days, so it's understandable. Regardless, if you're a fan of Gabriel-era Genesis, do not miss an opportunity to see The Musical Box perform.

The best Genesis tribute out there. Would go back and see them anytime.

  • The Musical Box was excellent

by TPal23 on 7/24/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent recreation of the Genesis tour show, Selling England by the Pound. The lead singer even looked and sounded like PG and the drummer looked just like Phil Collins. They played everything right, note for note, word for word. The only negative was that the bass was overpowering the sound mix from where we sat in the front row of the mezzanine. The sound man could have fixed that, but didn't. I highly recommend seeing this band if you are an old- Genesis and/or Peter Gabriel fan like me. If you are, you may also want to check out a local (NY area) band called Prognosis that specializes in old-Genesis and Peter Gabriel music with a video show. They are excellent, as well.

Have been going to their concerts over the past fifteen years and am never disappointed. It still makes chills going down my spine from start to finish.

This was the second time I saw The Musical Box. Absolutely outstanding.

  • Just go – you must see this!

As a long time Genesis (Gabriel) fan, I admit to some skepticism about attending a tribute band performance. But the Musical Box was nothing like a tribute band, rather a living, breathing, dedicated, talented and committed group of artists who re-created the Foxtrot tour flawlessly. Yes, the drummer was as good as "that guy", the guitarist was as good as Steve Hackett, but the man personifying Peter was pure genius. If you are a Genesis fan, you must see the show. If you are not, you especially need to see this show, because you will be a Genesis fan after. (I found the newly opened Howard Theatre to be a nice venue, serving decent food and had nice people on staff. Too bad they had to gut all the beautiful ornamentation, and make it look like a hotel conference room, but this in no way affected my enjoyment of the show – I was in another world all together.)

  • Musical Box is a must see

If you are a Genesis fan you have to see them, playing the music as good or even better. Just unbelievable !

  • The Musical Box was fantastic!!!

by UnderimpressedwithBilly on 7/22/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

Let's face it, these guys aren't Genesis, but they're probably about as close as anyone can get to them. They were very, very good. I've been listening to Genesis for 36 years now, and I was extremely impressed. I will be looking for these guys, and will make sure I don't miss them anytime they come around in the future. And the best part, everything they played was old! From Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, and Selling England by the Pound. PLEASE COME BACK SOON!!!

Absolutely amazing!!!! Loved every minute of it!! Any old school Genesis fan would love this! I'm so glad that I went to this show! The attention to detail was spot on. I can't wait to see it again! Played for about two hours straight. So very talented , every one of them!

  • OMG... what a mistake to buy tickets for this...

by Big2wheelr on 7/22/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - EnglewoodRating: 1 out of 5

I must have lost track with reality somewhere... My understanding of Musical Box was that they played Genesis music.. (and I'm thinking of Phil Collin's Genesis). I must have missed a beat somewhere.. because that is NOT what I got. Others must have known better because the theater was more than half empty! What I got was a ton of screaming head banging noise (can you spell 'acid rock' ?) and an idiot singer who thought it very cool to keep moving his head around in odd positions!!! We left after the 3rd number.. The noise was just too piercing..

  • Impressive!

by PLS58 on 7/22/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - EnglewoodRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first time seeing the Musical Box. As a long time 70's Genesis fan, it was great to see the show. Their virtuosity is superb. The sound was off however with too much bass and drum drowning out the rest of the band where we were sitting, which was stage left in row D. The staff at the Bergen PAC are great. They are very friendly and helpful. Its a comfortable and relaxed place with a nice bar area. I will be sure to catch The Musical Box again because I believe that these shows typically have excellent sound.

  • always exceptional

they never fail to impress and put on a spectacular show! I wasn't old enough to see the original band at that stage. As far as I am concerned it is good as the original!

  • The Musical Box in Engelwood NJ

by Brett4NJ on 7/22/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

Once again, The Musical box has sent me back to the mid 70's with a masterful replication of a concert. Everywhere you look, People are singingat the top of their lungs, playing air guitar and air drums. The very definition of rocking out. This time it was Selling England by the pound. I have also seen The Musical Box perform other concerts in various Stages of Genesis' over the years. If you are into the real Genesis, this is show you must see. Take the kids. I did. Show them what real progressive rock really is. As long as the Musical Box keeps playing. I will keep going. Well Done Gentlemen.

  • Absolutely amazing!

If you are a fan of the "old" Genesis, you should not miss these guys. They are absolutely fantastic and precise in their playing and presentation of the old songs. You will be blown away. Well worth the money.

  • The Musical Box

by Ralpoe on 7/22/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

I would not call The Musical Box a cover band. They go way beyond that in terms of their show. It was like being able to go back in time to see the real Genesis with Peter Gabriel in the 70's. I really do hope they return sometime soon.

  • "The Musical Box" -- great show!

by KEHL2004 on 7/22/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - EnglewoodRating: 4 out of 5

As a longtime Genesis fan who was too young to see the original Gabriel-era shows, The Musical Box is a wonderful way to experience them today. The musicianship is top-notch and the Peter Gabriel "stand-in" is perfectly over the top! My only negative part of this particular show is that the sound mixing seemed a bit off; the vocals and especially the flute seemed overshadowed by the rest of the music. Apart from that, it was top-notch!

Musical Box outperformed expecations - playing incredible replication of Genesis' most creative era.

  • Great band in a Muddled Audio Environment

by KidPags on 7/22/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - EnglewoodRating: 4 out of 5

I've seen MB 2x previously and each time the experience was sublime; superior renditions of classic material in a pristine audio environment. At the Bergen PAC however, the sound was a bit muddy and incoherent at times. I was losing rhythms, vocals and some keys were lost in the mix, a dirty boom prevailed in the overall tone of the band. Perhaps the Bergen PAC had an 'off night' as if that was possible, so I will try the venus again. As far as Musical Box is concerned, this band is top-shelf and I'll never grow tired of their performance. A must-see.

  • So loud you can't hear the music

by Rubbaloid on 7/22/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - EnglewoodRating: 3 out of 5

Volume killed the musicianship of the night. Seats in 2nd row of balcony. Needed earplugs. Nothing but a cringing wall of ear splitting loudness. Muddy, indecipherable lyrics, blaring instruments. Wish they had turned the amps down so we could hear the notes and lyrics. Shame. The band seemed on target throughout but lost us. On way home, ears ringing, we listened to Genesis on iPod, same tracks as during concert. Beautiful, melodic, delicate, intricate. Disappointed because I know that Musical Box had the talent to mimic Genesis. Turn it down guys, let's hear what you can do.
