The Musical Box @ The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta
by Oldfatbubba on 7/27/14Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5The Musical Box is a Genesis cover band performing historically accurate reproductions of Genesis concerts. For this show, they turned the clock back to 1973 when Genesis was touring to support their newly-released Selling England by the Pound LP. Clearly, they have spent lots of effort to make the stage, lighting, backgrounds and costumes as authentic as possible. The same can be said for the music. Denis Gagne's voice and onstage mannerism is a dead-ringer for Peter Gabriel. The same can be said for the drummer Marc Laflamme, who played drums like a banshee while sporting the same white overalls that Phil Collins wore during this period. And while he doesn't look like Steve Hackett, Francois Gagon must have studied countless hours of audio and video to learn Steve's parts (flawlessly). As for this particular show, the band received standing ovations after almost every number but seemed tired at times, particularly Denis who was clearly winded during his introductions. This was their 5th show in 6 days, so it's understandable. Regardless, if you're a fan of Gabriel-era Genesis, do not miss an opportunity to see The Musical Box perform.
