    Great performance, but opportunity missed

by crunchyjax on 3/25/14New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

This was a fantastic performance of The Music Man, the talent was impressive and the performers were able to convey the spirit of the material, even in this "concert" format. However, the show was billed as "inspired by historical accounts of communities established by former slaves across the U.S. in the Great Migration following the Civil War." I felt that simply having an African-American cast did not fully realize this vision. There did not appear to be much that conveyed anything about this history. In fact, even one character used an Irish accent, as if this was an all-White, traditional production of the show. We went hoping for something really innovative and imaginative in conveying a community of former slaves. Alas, this was really a traditional presentation of this play - an opportunity lost. However, due to the great performances and the wonderful material, it still deserves 4 stars.

    Very talented cast!

by robbietimex on 3/25/14New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

I don't go to many musicals and the few I've been too have been in NYC so going to this show ( The Music Man ) at NJPac I was unsure of what to expect in terms of production quality. I couldn't have been more pleased, the players of the show where so well cast in every roll and every individual perform was just extraordinary in their roll. The acting was great and the singing was just incredible. I didn't read the credential of the performers prior to the show but at intermission I was compelled to read the bio's of each member and I found out that a lot of the cast had long professional careers on Broadway as well as in film and tv, that explained everything. One thing that really stood out to me was how engaged every performer was in what was going on even when they where sitting off to the side of the main action of the show. Very professional. So if you want a Broadway experience in a NJ suburb don't hesitate to see the "Music Man" @ NJPac. Just a side note this has to be one of the safest area's in the state when performances are going on, Newark is well aware of the perception of the city and they go way overboard with security measures and oversaturate the area with police so as to avoid and bad experiences. You're probably safer in Newark NJ before and after a show then in your own town on a friday evening.

I really enjoy the show and I had great seats. This was a very family friendly show which made it that much more special. The actors and singers were truly engaging.

The Music Man was well done

by Timtill on 3/24/14New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Only drawback is that each cast member carried a binder during the play and read their lines. This was very distracting and took away from becoming immersed in each character. Could they not remember their lines?

Music Man not what i expected

by whyme123 on 3/24/14New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Since this is an 'African American' version of The Music Man, we expected to see and hear variations of the original. We were very much disappointed. There was no rap, no dancing, no tap, no indication that this was the 'black' version, just a poor attempt by blacks to do what was an all white wonderful musical. Can you imagine a black woman acting her part as an Irish woman ? No need to wonder, see this play. As for the production, is also underwhelmed. There was no play, or acting, just songs - except when the actors (who could have been good) would carry their loose leaf binders around with them and read it word for word. It was very distracting and very unusual. All in all, it was a huge disappointment.

    The Music Man was great!

by Heidionebraid on 8/29/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

Went to see The Music Man on Aug. 18th at Ogunquit Theater. The play was comparable to a Broadway production in regards to the acting, costumes and sets. It closely followed the movie version of which I am quite familiar. Couldn't help but sing some of the songs along with the cast. Excellent!

    An ambitious production well done

by RobininMass on 8/22/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

Staging The Music Man is a major undertaking with a sizable cast - including lots of kids of all ages - demanding both singing and dancing skills by just about everyone. The Ogunquit Playhouse pulled it off, and clearly everyone was having a fabulous time. The audience fell in love with the lead actress who played Marion, and I don't recall ever experiencing the extended applause and near standing ovation after one of her showcase solos. Such charisma! My only complaint was that the entire cast was overamplified, making it difficult to hear the lyrics, especially in the ensemble numbers and occasionally with spoken lines. The problem may also have been with the placement of the mikes. This is not the first time this has been a problem at the playhouse (for us and other audience members with whom we spoke). This was the last performance of this production, but we've seen numerous shows at Ogumquit, and have really enjoyed the great majority.

    Really Very Good

by Oldfashionedfunnyguy on 8/21/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

This was a very interesting version of The Music Man. Unlike earlier versions -- I've seen both the movie version and the recent Broadway version with Craig Bierko -- Ogunquit's version of The Music Man seemed to focus as much on Marian as on Professor Hill. Not surprising, because the young lady who played Marian was truly terrific -- a wonderful voice and a real connection with the audience. Peter Scolari was very good as Professor Hill, playing a bit more as a member of the ensemble than as the man out front, but frankly, I preferred that; he also seemed to be battling a bit of a scratchy voice -- but what a trooper!! And the surrounding players were also very good; Mr. and Mrs. Shinn, Mrs. Paroo, Marcellus and the four school board members were all extremely funny. Overall, I think this was an excellent production!

    A Great Show!

by Naba on 8/21/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

Harold (Scolari) and Marian (Burrows) were a good pair to play in this delightful musical set in Iowa.

Overall, loved it! Thought Julia Burrows as Marion was FANTASTIC. What a talent!! Also, loved the barber shop quartet, the kids, the sets and costumes. Thought Peter Scolari was weak as the lead. He came off as more cocky than confident and not totally likable. He was difficult to understand at times.

    THE NO MUSIC MAN

by ogun on 8/20/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

This musical was enjoyable and well staged with one glaring exception --- the music man (Prof. Hill) does not sing very well and detracted from an otherwise fine production. He simply does not do justice to this role. On the other hand, the other co-star, Marion the Librarian, was superb! A fantastic voice that was well recognized and applauded by the audience. The barbershop quartet was excellent, as were the dancers. The small children (marching band) who were not seen nor heard until the finale, were a great addition and should be on stage throughout more of the musical. Overall, I would give this performance a borderline recommendation.

    Music Man

by Lindamargret on 8/20/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

Great voices costumes needed some attention (hem down, shoes scuffed and children's shoes needed polishing). Play was great otherwise!!!!

    Peter Scolari a huge disappointment

by Musicmanfan on 8/20/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

I love the Music Man. have seen it many, many times. Peter Scolari's performance on Thursday August 18th matinee was extremely disappointing. Trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, we thought he might be sick. He couldn't sing. He couldn't dance. And, his acting was non-existant. Lucikly Julia Burrows and the rest of the cast were outstanding which salvaged the show somewhat. As for Peter, he owes this audience an apology unless he has a note from his doctor.

The overall play was excellant. The lead character was miscast. All in my party agreed that he distracted from the others who all excelled in their part. The show was scheduled at 2:30 PM. The center door only was opened at 2:20 PM How you could seat mostly senior citizens in 10 minutes was a mystery. All were standing around a non air conditioned lobby waiting for the doors to open. Obviously the play as usual did not start on time. Other than the lead character we found it most enjoyable.

    The Ogunquit Playhouse Music Man-Fantastic!

    by 2SpedTeachers on 8/19/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

The singing was astounding, and the pit orchestra was super. We loved the children. They did a superb job staying attentive, remembering their lines, and displaying clear emotions. The dancing was fun! The revision of The Music Man for the Ogunquit Players was inspired and inspirational! My husband left saying he wants to donate money to the theater! What a treasure for the entire New England area!

    The Music Man

by BSPMK on 8/18/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

First time at The Ogunquit Playhouse. Small but quaint. The Music Man was great and we had great seats. I was a bit unhappy with the parking area. All of the cars are jammed one behind the other and it would be impossible to get out in an emergency. Perhaps they could rethink the parking situation.

Ogunquit Playhouse does The Music Man right!

by Nonatom on 8/18/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

Charming and entertaining from beginning to end...the set, the costumes, the talented cast, the orchestra. It all came together for a real uplifting, toe-tapping experience. Great for older children as well as their parents & grandparents. I loved it!
