About

Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. Ona mission to "honor our roots and honor our dead", The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return.  Now-a year after 'La Realidad De Los Sueños', aluxurious 18-LP box-set compiling their back catalog, sold out its 5,000 print run in under 24 hours-The Mars Volta are back.

Throughout their career, The Mars Volta have brought played many famous venues to capacity, like Tabernacle in Atlanta and Terminal 5 in New York.

  • I have a Thomas Pridgen drumstick

by AMazzott on 10/10/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Pushed my way to the front with my friend, and had the best experience I could have hoped for. And at the end, my friend and I both got a drum stick from Pridgen and a set list too. If you really like them, see their show. You'll just realize why you like them and like them even more.

  • Hypnotizing!

by MoKelly on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Unlike anything I've ever seen live. The music alone is worth the money, but Cedric and Omar dancing, the lighting and backdrop effects... altogether fantasmic!

  • Mars Volta sets the standard

by heathazrealm on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

If you're anything like me you are a little disappointed at the direction of rock, The Mars Volta comes correct and doesn't let go. These men can bust a tune and are all exceptional within the preformance. Omar Rodrequiz is a phenomenal guitar player who orchestrates it all. Pigeon(sp) the drummer is a mad man who just blows the competition away. As for Cedric I love his moody, melancholy madness he delivers. They just rocked my world! I appreciate the vast catalogue of music these guys have created. To see them live was a must. I dragged two friends who also have similar taste in music as I but do not have the deep appreciation for the wild ride that their music takes its listeners. Everyone should see the eloquently bold music of the Mars Volta!! I hope they return soon as we are left with the likes of Nickleback,3 doors down, stained, chevelle,Kings of Leon and Kid Rock. Not that they are all crap it just pales in comparison. So Mars Volta Boston wants you back pronto! As they rocked the house and people got their monies worth!

  • missed some of the show

by tmvf on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

the mar volta is amazing and i recommend everyone experience them live. the show was shockingly early. with 7pm doors and 8pm showtime i assumed like 99% of the hundreds of shows ive been to and played myself that the headliner would go on at least 1 hour after the show starts. i showed up at 845 because of class at college and i missed a good portion of the mars volta. maybe its some of my fault not looking into who the openers were, but i had to miss them anyway if there we even any.

  • Mars Volta In Boston

by yay4marsvolta on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Wow. That is all I have to say. The Mars Volta are incredible. Whether it is one of their rocking tunes or one of their slower, more progressive songs, they held the audiences attention for every single second. From the opening note of Son et Lumiere/Inertiatic ESP to the last note of the Widow, it was never a boring concert. My only criticism was the lack of an encore. They left the stage suddenly, and it sort of felt like they left the audience hanging. But all in all, it was amazing.

Been to a lot of shows, best show yet. Volta kicks ass and so does the crew and technology at House of Blues!! Thanks guys.

  • infectious high energy madness!

by resistance on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The lights darken. Dramatic mariachi music come on the PA. A trumpet is trilling, you expect to see Clint Eastwood step out from behind a rock dressed in a Mexican poncho. The audience is howling in anticipation. The musicians gather on stage and you start to hear quiet guitar sounds. The first word from the singer's lips is "Clipside". Yesss! It's Inertiatic ESP, the first song from their first album. Tight hits on the intro with the whole band, with lightman getting in on it as well with white flashes, "Now I'm Lost...", and we are in! Explosion of sound erupts. The madness ensues. The sound is loud and abrasive and at first the guitar is overpowering and giving us these high harmonics, so it is hard to hear everything that is going on. But that gets better as the set continues. Cedric (lead singer) is belting out those inhumanly high pitched notes, and Omar (guitarist) is pushing the sound with his consistently masterful technique. Pridgon (the drummer) is already sweating on the first song it appears. He is SUCH a monster on the kit - he alone is worth the price of admission. About halfway through the show my friend wants to go up front so I follow him through the crowd and we make it to about 10feet from the stage. We are in the pit now. This is not a crazy elbow-to-the-face mosh, but people can't help themsleves. The music is so infectious we have to move. Everyone is jumping and pushing and it is chaos. Girls are in it too b/c is not too agressive. Just letting off some of that steam and it is so perfect. Cedric says something like "you are witnessing a Spinal Tap moment" when the backdrop falls to reveal a new backdrop (their painted backdrops are awesome, BTW). But it doesn't fall all the way and one side of it is held up - stuck - a tech dude has to climb a little ladder up about 50 feet to unhook it. Classic! Unfortunately they stop promptly at 90 minutes, with no encore. :( TMV shows are always frustrating b/c they seem so short. But if those guys went longer than 90minutes they would probably not make it through their tour. This is high energy rock, not for the light hearted. Certainly not for everyone, but for those who seek abandon through complex, aggressive music, sprinkled with sexy mellow vocal chants, this is IT.

  • Great show, but no encore??

by BenK on 10/8/09House of Blues - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

It was a good show, seemed a little on the shorter side though and there was no encore. They put the lights on and started taking down the set immediately so there wasn't even a chance! Kind of a bummer.. Does anyone have the setlist? Post it here or at setlist.fm!

  • Unbelievable

by Nickname91 on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This truly was an incredible show. I was expecting somewhat of a chilled out show with most of the songs from the new album, but they played 4 from De-loused which made everyone incredibly happy. Cedric sounded fantastic, Ikey was on fire and Omar lit up the Viscera Eyes solo. There were no weak points at all in the show, although they do have a tendency to stretch out the outro to Roulette Dares for a bit too long. Everything was spectacular though, and I can't wait to see them again. If you're only fan of their old stuff, there's still plenty of reason to go- they even played Eunuch Provocateur which was a huge surprise to me. Once again, unbelievable!

  • i heart the mars volta

    just simply amazing.

  • Mars Volta Rocks the House

by FishTank on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

A great show overall, but I thought the sound could have been better. The drummer definitley takes the spotlight. I was disapointed that they only played for 95 minutes with no encore.

  • Sweet but Short

by DVDDD on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

The Mars Volta is an amazing band to see live if you ever get the chance. I just wish they would extend their sets a little. The last two times I've seen them they played the mandatory 90 mins and left the stage. I want MORE!

  • The Mars Volta

by jsb3 on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The show was like a psychedelic trip from the 70's with a millennium twist. The lead singer demanded your attention with his Robert plant like charisma and his Robert Daltrey like corded mike tricks and his outstanding vocal range! but shared the lime light with the other members of the band a true professional . The drummer was simply amazing in a class all by himself .The back bone of the whole performance . The Mars Volta Is a well seasoned tight live band. Two thumbs up!!!

  • The Mars Volta = One of the best Rock Acts

by MattN308 on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This was my 5th time seeing the Mars Volta. I have to say that this was my favorite show that they played. Starting the show with the amazing Son et Lumiere and going right into Inertiatic ESP was the best possible way to open a Mars Volta show. They played a good mix of songs from each of their five studio albums, and even Eunuch Provocateur from their Tremulant EP.

  • I'm A New Man

by cicatriz283 on 10/8/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Mars Volta has been one of my favorite bands for the past couple years and this was my first time seeing them live. The last time they came to Boston was when they opened for the Chili Peppers waand they did not get great reviews. However, this show blew me away, their energy was incredible and each band member transcended the next in terms of skill, talent, and feel. Cedric hit mind-blowing falsettos over pridgen's ridiculous rhtyms and Omar's breathtatking solos. This truly was the best concert i have ever been to and I cannot wait to see them again.

  • Fell in Love when seeing them LIVE

by GeneousEntropy on 10/7/09The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

It was years ago and they were opening for APC. I respected them musically but was not fond of the vocals prior to seeing them in concert. I wanted to be up front for APC which meant being up front for The Mars Volta. They have an energy that is what i felt to be spiritual. The amount of emotion from the band members was stimulating, giving meaning to their album and its concept. It was a 30-45 minute jam session and the way they transitioned from one song to another was very fluid and did not sound like a compilation mixed tape. Concerts were a common weekend activity for me until i got older and I have seen many bands so, i must add that The Mars Volta is in my top 3 favorite shows. Not only was it awesome to listen and watch but it was life changing.

  • Mars volta in toronto

by StinaHyena on 10/7/09Kool Haus - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Aside from getting lost due to mapquest and being ditched, the Mars Volta are an amazing band comprised of very talented musicians. I arrived just when they were starting and they played for almost 2 hours. They covered a huge array of their catalogue of albums. I highly recommend seeing them or something. I even did not mind paying for 2 tickets just for me.

  • Best The Mars Volta show so far

by dsanchez on 10/6/09Kool Haus - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Saw them in Kool Haus, Toronto. They played songs from all of their albums up to Octahedron, and including Tremulant. These guys bring so much energy to the stage, it's unbelievable! I will definitely go see them again.
