Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. Ona mission to "honor our roots and honor our dead", The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return. Now-a year after 'La Realidad De Los Sueños', aluxurious 18-LP box-set compiling their back catalog, sold out its 5,000 print run in under 24 hours-The Mars Volta are back.
Throughout their career, The Mars Volta have brought played many famous venues to capacity, like Tabernacle in Atlanta and Terminal 5 in New York.

The Electric Factory show was incredible. I have never felt so alive from music in my life! The lights, the stage design, the crowd and band were just fantastic. I wish I could've made the Baltimore show, too!
The set was awesome, band sounded great, but waaaaayyy too short. I saw them at the same venue last year and the show ended abruptly as well, but it least it was two hours instead of an hour and a half. Once again I leave with mixed fellings, they were great while they were on stage, but the show just wasn't long enough.
this was the 2nd time ive seen the mars. the 1st time was in tulsa oklahoma, they played for 2 hrs and 40 mins str8. best show in the world, goin nuts rockin out. at the elec factory, they were dull, and only played for 1.5 hrs. i felt like i got robbed. we waited after the show for the band to come out. the drummer and bassist were madd cool, so was ikey. omar slipped out like immediately after the show and went in the bus and didnt say anything to us then cedrick came out with an entourage of guards and didnt even look at us as he got on the bus. he wasnt wrappin the cord around him self or doing anything cool onstage like he was in oklahoma. also, when i seen em the 1st time, there were like 12 guys in the band. the other night they had like 6. big let down, they didnt play their best songs...kinda sucked
It was beautiful. It's amazing how he hits those notes.
Amazing concert, it was a musical intercourse. TMV is a must.
A great mix of new and older TMV songs.
Amazing show. They took out all of the 'filler' from previous tours. Highlights were cicatriz and viscera eyes.
set list was amazing except for maybe one or two more frances the mute songs. excellent performance, background was very interesting. it was a great two hours but i could have watched them play a few more songs.
This was the 4th time I’ve seen the Mars Volta and the 2nd time it has been at the Electric Factory. It was an amazing experience. A fantastic set list that touched on their whole gambit of work as opposed to their most recent album. The band was smaller than usual without the horn players. They were missed but the band was still solid. I love to see Omar smile while he is playing guitar. You can tell the band is really having a good time. Cedric as usual looks a little sick, spitting in a trash can and sipping a tea that keeps being replenished by an assistant. They did not use the screens on the side of venue as they did last time I saw them. This was somewhat disappointing but I was still impressed. As usual, there was no opener but you do not feel gypped because these guys work hard. If you are on the fence I would advise you to go see them. Go with an open mind and just enjoy yourself.
The show was amazing from start to finish. It was too short though & no encore!! Well worth coming out for.
When I arrived at the venue I was kind of worried. It looked like a pretty scummy crowd, and the general area wasn't that great either. However when I got inside everything was fine, the venue was really cool and most the people around me were friendly and I met some cool people. When the band came out everyone went wild, and when they started playing there was a mad dash to the front. Much bad dancing followed. The energy of the band was amazing right from the first wave of awesome. I went with 4 other people and each of us had a different favorite band member because they were all just too cool. Cedric's vocals were a little hard to hear at first, but the sound guys eventually got on it and by the end his signature highs were glass-breaking. He has not gotten any less crazy and still does his dancing and jumps and microphone moves I love so much. Not only is he an amazing frontman and vocalist, but Cedric has the badassness to back it up. It's safe to say he was my favorite. Omar seemed a little peeved for a very short while, but by the end he was laughing and having a great time destroying sound with his guitar. His guitar skills were prevelant throughout the show. Ikey was completely absorbed in his playing and did a great job, and he gave the crowd these jazzy "what's good" looks during his breaks that one of my friends thought was the coolest thing ever. Thomas of course shook the venue with his rythmic mayhem, and he proved an inspiration to my drummer friend. Juan did his work with passion and provided us with an awesome bass solo. Marcel did his job flawlessly, though he was the hardest to notice of the 6 musicians on stage. Everything about the performance just blew my mind, and there is no doubt I am seeing The Mars Volta again. My only wish was that the show was longer. I would've rather the show never ended, but I definitely would've been happy to stay for at least another hour. They packed more than the capacity of their elecricity into their time though, and the experience was still worth more than I paid. There is no way I'm ever going to forget the show, or the piercing stare of the awesome Cedric Bixler-Zavala.
My friend Dougie told me that they were coming to play a show in Philadelphia. I never really checked them out before so I decided to go but was a bit skeptical. I went to the show and was captivated by the singer! He was able to effectively use visuals and props to dazzle the audience. After the show they left with grace not something you see from bands these days. I am going to leave soon to buy all their c.d's
I loved it, they were great, but the show was really short. I really really really wish they would have played Concertina or L'Via L'Viaquez :(
The concert last night Oct 10th was great. Cedric seemed to have a throat problem because he kept drinking hot tea every two songs, but he sounded good. Omar was amazing as expected. The show was loud and they played really good songs. Opening song was ineratic esp which was my favorite song of the night. The only bad part about the show was there was no encore. Maybe they had to get on the road or Cedric just didn't want to sing anymore. Overall it was a great show and I am so glad to have seen them.
Came on at exactly the start time. no opening bands. played for two hours non-stop. Amazing show. played everything from all their albums.
I can't imagine that anyone who can get their head around The Mars Volta would not have enjoyed this show. They played for about an hour and a half, and their set consisted of highlights from all their albums and their debut EP. I was sorry it was over, but it's good to leave the crowd wanting more. Their psychedelic backdrop and light show were impressive. The combination of visuals and music made for an incredible experience.
This show was no doubt the best that I have ever seen. The lineup of songs was perfect and the acoustics were amazing.
They sounded amazing. It was way beyond my expectations. Although the show seemed a little short (maybe like an hour and a half to two hours) but I would tell anyone interested in The Mars Volta, to go see them live. Amazing
it was awsome.
