Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. Ona mission to "honor our roots and honor our dead", The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return. Now-a year after 'La Realidad De Los Sueños', aluxurious 18-LP box-set compiling their back catalog, sold out its 5,000 print run in under 24 hours-The Mars Volta are back.
Throughout their career, The Mars Volta have brought played many famous venues to capacity, like Tabernacle in Atlanta and Terminal 5 in New York.
This was my first time seeing The Mars Volta live. The show was great and I really liked the venue, Soma.
Humans smile to show a face. Well, this concert made my brain smile. I wasn't smilling to show a face, it was something that my body and brain were reflecting. It's human at it's best form.
The Mars Volta put on a great show. They played a good mix from all their albums. The venue was a little unconventional but good nonetheless.
The Mars Volta played an amazing set at First Ave. I went in expecting to leave with my face melted off by their extraordinary shows I had heard so much about. Unfortunately, it ended in confusion for me when they went off stage and the time said 8:45 pm. Although they were the only band playing and they did play for a little over an hour, I still don't think that 9:00 is really an appropriate time for a show to end.
I have to be honest. I love The Mars Volta. They played almost every song i wanted to hear. The venue was modest and I was looking forward to them blowing the roof off of that place. They came with no opening band. I expected a wonderful evening with my favorite band. I got an average night with few shining moments. They played for about an hour and a half. They stuck to mostly their radio friendly songs and failed to swim in the progressive, improvasational ebb and flow that they are notorious for. The sound was lacking. I had never seen them before and from what I was told, I should invest in ear plugs. No plugs. No ringing ears. They did not come with the full cast either. No sax, no flute, no trumpet. What gives? I still enjoy their music and will continue to support what they do but in my opinion, you have to bring it live. They brought half of it.
Awesome show, after years of playing together they have become so tight that the performance was unbelievable. A must for any Volta fan before too long, gives a whole new dimension to how they are listened to.
All fans should have been able to stay up near the stage.
The Mars Volta put on an energetic show on September 19, 2009 at the Municipal Auditorium. It was so mind blowing i'm still recovering from the awesomeness. It was a dissapointment that there was no encore, but with what they played, everyone went home satisfied.
Absolutely unbelievable!!!! We've been to hundreds of concerts and had one of the most amazing experiences at the Mars Volta show!!!! They are incredibily talented musicians with a great mix of show appeal. Just with the control of their music, they can take you up and down with emotion. Everyone has to check them out for an unforgettable concert!!!!
Words cannot describe their stage presentation. Flawless playing, radical dances from cedric and omar, oh and nice bra and mexican flag that got thrown on stage.
I was sitting 4th row from the stage and by the time I left I had a ringing in my right ear that lasted for 2 days!!! TMV made sure there first headlining show in SA was worth it. And it was. Though it was a 20 minute delay they surely made up for it by showcasing there prog rock chops through a blistering set.
The Mars Volta show in SA was incredible. The size of the venue was just right and even though I did not have GA seats like I wanted, I had a good view. I would see them again next time they visit Texas.
The two hour show was amazing. There was on one song that had too much bass, but the rest of the show was amazing!!!!! They are a cross of Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd and Mettalica. They were great for all ages!!!
Awesome performance. It was a great show to watch I highly recommend seeing them this tour.
The Mars Volta is one of the few bands that realize, that music is a passion and not just some talent humans possess. They play to share their creations and advance intellectually. They are truly a wonderful, diverse, and intelligent band. To see them live, exceeds all expectations. Their Punctuality in performance of their songs is bullseye but it is embellished by lengthy solos and abstract improvisation.
It was truly amazing, It felt unbelievable to be there! Their energy was radiating through the audience.
True Musicians! Amazing performance, two or three strait hours of sycadelic rock.
The Mars Volta are great on cd, but simply amazing live in person. I would highly recommend eveyone should see them at least once to experience pure free form music performed at its highest level. I am still try to catch my breath.
AWESOME SHOW AT A VERY CLASSY VENUE, OMAR AND CEDRIC DO WHAT THEY DO BEST!!!
