About

Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. Ona mission to "honor our roots and honor our dead", The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return.  Now-a year after 'La Realidad De Los Sueños', aluxurious 18-LP box-set compiling their back catalog, sold out its 5,000 print run in under 24 hours-The Mars Volta are back.

Throughout their career, The Mars Volta have brought played many famous venues to capacity, like Tabernacle in Atlanta and Terminal 5 in New York.

  • Mars Volta in San Antonio

by Chapa4dia on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

It was more like an experience than a show. I loved it, it made me feel free for at least thoes 3 hours. They had so much energy and presence, Cedric whailed and the drummist never stopped. The Municipal has terrible acoustics, but you couldnt tell last night. I would love to see them again. Cedric Bixler-Zavala stated in an interview: “ The Volta is taken from a Federico Fellini book about his films, what he characterizes as a changing of scene, or a turnaround; a new scene to him is called Volta. Y'know, changing of time and the changeover. And Mars, we're just fascinated by science fiction so and it's something that ultimately looked as in anything I write, its meaning is always up to the listener. As the way we write songs and words, if it looks great on paper then to us it's like painting, so if it looks good meaning the second then people usually have a better interpretation than we ever would.[4]

  • Mars Volta Rocks SA!

by greeneyedlass on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was intimate, the backdrop was trippy, and Mars Votla shook the floors! While the auditorium was a bit echo-ey for this type of band, the performance was amazing. Seeing them live is an experience like no other.

  • Non-Stop 2 hours of serious rock

I was tired just watching these guys. Amazing musicians.

  • Brilliant

by dommmmmmmmmmmmm on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

If you can't help dancing to their music, don't worry you weren't alone. I find that these musicians push the envelope when it comes to live performance, it is really too amazing to describe how well they orchestrate their music together. Every one on that stage, the way they move, the depth of feeling they get into their performing, you just can't help but want to join in with their energy. I will watch this band a lifetime anytime they're rocking near my city! Devil's advocate: If you don't like music that can get out of synch and seem to have "weird" tempos and beats, i.e. if you are too used to listen to pop radio, I don't think you'll appreciate this music as you won't understand the flow of it. That's an appreciation you pick up from listening to a couple or more of their albums.

  • The Mars Volta delivered

by anamnesisNow on 9/18/09The Palladium Ballroom - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

They were great as I expected them to be. There were some mixing issues the 1st half of the show - the vocals were a little muddy and drowned out by the guitar but it was still great. The highlight of the show was Thomas Pridgen -- what an amazing drummer. Don't get me wrong, they were all great but Thomas stood out even amongst the other amazing musicians in this band. I would highly recommend seeing The Mars Volta if you have the chance. I just wish the venue had been House of Blues instead of the Palladium. The Palladium is not a bad venue but HOB has superior acoustics and it's not standing room only. BTW, kudos to Cedric for his comments on 9/11. We need an investigation (notice I did not say "new" investigation as there never was one.).

  • The Mars Volta is Fanominal

by ChadJackson on 9/17/09The Palladium Ballroom - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

These guys are crazy talented. Hearing them live is better then hearing their actual albums (and even their albums are amazing). They were enternaing. And I just had an all around great time. Definatly exceeded what I paid.

  • Mars Volta is the best, period.

    by FelixG1 on 9/17/09The Palladium Ballroom - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This event will be unforgettable. I've always loved the Volta, but never had a chance to see them live until tonight. Now...I love thier new album Octahedron, but they just COMPLETELY blew me away when they played songs from my favorite album Deloused, and even went a step further and played the widow!!! I almost lost it I was jamming out so hard. The bartenders were great and friendly, the process of getting a beer was quick and easy, even when the place got jam packed. Bathrooms were okay, never got too packed, and it was pretty clean for the most part. Overall, I can definitely say that The Volta completely rocked my socks off. They delivered, HARD. They sound JUST as great live, if not even better live. I love you Cedric and Omar.

  • Spoilers--Unexpected Set

by VoltaHead on 9/17/09The Palladium Ballroom - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

I was going to this event with every song on Octahedron on my mind, though they only performed less than a handful from the album. I was pleasantly surprised when they started playing singles from their previous albums such as Roulette Dares, The Widow, Inertiatic ESP.... very satisfied with the presentation.... I was hoping they would have played Since We've Been Wrong--I mean it IS the US single... but I LOVED IT! :D

  • Mars Volta was amazing.

    by baphomet91 on 9/17/09The Palladium Ballroom - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The band was explosive, Cedric's vocals were dead on, and they played some of their best songs. The only complaint one could have about the concert itself was the crowd surfers. Being up in the front, I noticed that Cedric was a little annoyed with the crowd surfers, as he should be. Be that as it may, one of the most amazing concerts ever, and I strongly hope they come back to dallas again.

  • Disapointment compared to past Mars Volta shows

    by Mac9641 on 9/17/09The Palladium Ballroom - DallasRating: 2 out of 5

Cedric was out of time for the first few songs. No Encore, Extremely short show! Only 1 hour and 10 minutes long. very disapointing. Mega points though to The Mars Volta for speaking out against 9/11 and standing up for FREEDOM!

  • Acid Rock Slays Crowd
