Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. Ona mission to "honor our roots and honor our dead", The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return. Now-a year after 'La Realidad De Los Sueños', aluxurious 18-LP box-set compiling their back catalog, sold out its 5,000 print run in under 24 hours-The Mars Volta are back.
Throughout their career, The Mars Volta have brought played many famous venues to capacity, like Tabernacle in Atlanta and Terminal 5 in New York.
THEY WERE INCREDIBLE. THEY NEVER DISAPPOINT. ROCKED-OUT!!
way too loud. not kinda my show to begin with but i usually like very show i go to once there but this just was too loud for me to even try to enjoy.
the band was real tight, but they only played for an hour and a half?? No opening band and no encore. Would have been nice if they just did one encore but they were taking down stuff immediately when they got off. Good show but slightly disappointed
This band is reinventing what it means to play....
My only gripe was that the show started sooo early. It was over before 10PM. And there wasn't an opening act. $35 for less than 3 hours of music was too much. I love Mars Volta and the show was AMAZING, but overpriced.
Last night's show was not what I expected. This was my second time to see them live, and my friend's fourth time to see them, and we both had the same complaints. The main thing that bothered us was that the show was only an hour and forty minutes long! What the hell! Last March when I saw them, they played for nearly three and a half hours!! Also, Cedric was not his usual animated self... hardly any microphone tossing, crawling on the floor, or climbing the speakers. Seeing Cedric act like a maniac to that beautiful music is amazing, and to see him stand there like a typical mainstream musician was a bit of a disappointment. The music was great though, just wish that there would have been more of it. Also, TMV just doesnt sound right without their saxophonist. I still love these guys to death, however I hope next time is better.
Mars Volta never fails to deliver an passionate show every time.
This was the best and most energetic show I've ever been to. There was no point in the show when I was not groovin'. Simply incredible.
This may have been the best Monday of my life. With no opening band to warm up the crowd, Volta came straight on and the show never seemed to lose pace. A perfect blend of the new album along with many of the classic tracks from the past made the night amazing. This was the first opportunity I'd had to visit The Midland Theatre after it's renovation. Simply awesome. The place looks great. Definitely check out the very top balcony. The circular bar is choice. If you get the chance to check out this beautiful venue - do, but do not ever pass up the chance the see The Mars Volta. Plain and simple.
I was lucky enough to see these guys twice in a week; once in St. Louis, then in Kansas City. Their music just blows my mind.. Seriously, these guys toghether are pure genious. They sound amazing live.....and I've got to see them 4 times now. It's a pleasure every time.
Amazing show, start to finish. Knowing the subject matter of many of the songs and listening to how trippy their music is, I was a little skeptical that the band might be a little too drugged out to play well live although I love their studio albums. I was COMPLETELY wrong on that one. Every musician on stage was completely in synch with everyone around them, and the engergy they projected electrified the whole crowd. I've never heard psychedelic freak outs that were so precisely integrated in my life. A++++!!!! My only complaint was that there was no encore, but I still feel like I got more than my money's worth.
Great, great show. I had seen the mars volta open for a couple different bands several years ago and their sound was horrible. This show the sound was excellent, band was on point and is a blast to watch. I also believe that their music sounds much better live than trying to listen to their cd.
The Mars Volta are great musicians who play together well live, but I left disappointed. After clocking in a little less than two hours of stage time, the band abruptly walked of stage without an encore. The crowd simply stood around looking confused for about 10 minutes until the stage started being broken down, when it was more than apparent that the show really was over. The time they spent performing was wonderful. The mixing was great, and the volume was perfect. They sounded phenomenal live, and played a great mix of songs from their portfolio. Would I see them again? Yes. Could it have been longer, though? Hell yes.
let me start off by saying that i have been hyped for this show for a few weeks, since octohedron turned out to be a decent album. that said, i've seen TMV several times and each time i was less than impressed. why did i even bother with this show? i'm clearly a glutton... the sound was terrible. either they didn't have their own techs, or the ones at the midland are completely deaf. the guitars were screeching, vocals overwhelming, and drums mic'd/leveled completely wrong. i never heard the keyboards (was i even supposed to?), and the sound effects were the only consistent part. sound guy - please turn everything down from 11 to 6 or 7. seriously, it wasn't kemper arena.
The Mars Volta was incredible the other night in St. Louis. Myself, being a drummer, am blown away by Thomas Pridgen every time I see that cat play.. so inspiring for me to get better at what I do. Volta has the best live show of any band I've ever seen and this time was no different. They are one band that I make sure that I go see every time that they are in town. From the psychedelic backdrops to the improv jam outs that can last up to 25 mins.. this band never disappoints. I recommend anyone looking to be blown away be an amazing rock band go see The Mars Volta next time that they are in town!!
The Mars Volta live show is an experience. It is hard to describe unless you see them in person. Their energy is through the rough and the ride is like going through Alice in Wonderland's rabbit hole. Do not pass up the opportunity to see them if you haven't seen them in person already.
THE SHOW WAS PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!! I HAD A BLAST!!!!!
There was a ton of energy coming from the stage and this band. Once the show started it was balls-on for 100 minutes and then it was over. No opening band, no encore, just 70s pyscho hard rock. The band uses an interesting mix of soundscapes from laptops mixed in with live music. They had more pedals on stage than any band I've ever seen (except maybe Adrian Belew) and often used drippy delay on the guitar and keyboards. It was kind of hard to understand the words but this is true even on the studio albums. I would recommend this live show to anybody interested in unique, hard rock sounds.
I first saw Mars Volta in 2004 when they opened for A Perfect Circle (awesome). I remember first listening to them to prepare myself for the concert. Their music was unlike anything I had ever heard, and they performed unlike anyone I had ever seen. Top-notch in playing, singing, dancing (frontman Cedric, mixing moves from James Brown, Mick Jagger and a junkie), and flailing about (again, mostly Cedric), they have so much energy that it's wonder how long they can keep doing this. Hopefully for many more years. They reportedly have their next album already in the can. Tonight, they played for almost 2 hours straight, I wanted more. They had 3 or 4 backdrops that were really psychedelic and 70s-ish, with things like Mayan faces/symbols, wings, eyes of all colors, skeletal fish, and pyramidal structures. Also, these huge backdrops had layers that lit up only in certain color lights (the strange Mayan face in red, the pyramids lit up only in green, etc.) The band kept getting better all night, along with the sound, which was muddled at first. Also, a special note to the MIDLAND. If anyone of interest to you comes to this historic KC venue, go see it. It's twice as large as the Uptown and five times more grand. Being in a place like this makes you a little more hopeful as to what humans can create. It was that beautiful.
The mars volta is one of the best band I have seen, the only think I didn't really like was that the drinks were to expensive @ the Midland and also I thought they would play a little bit longer.
