About

Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. Ona mission to "honor our roots and honor our dead", The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return.  Now-a year after 'La Realidad De Los Sueños', aluxurious 18-LP box-set compiling their back catalog, sold out its 5,000 print run in under 24 hours-The Mars Volta are back.

Throughout their career, The Mars Volta have brought played many famous venues to capacity, like Tabernacle in Atlanta and Terminal 5 in New York.

  • Best backgrounds ever

by cheechxg on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Between Omar's guitar skills and Cedric's voice, the backgrounds were the final straw to breaking the back. They weren't some digital expensive display but a simply canvas of different visions with certain look depending on the color of light hitting it, absolutely amazing. They simply have to be one of the best live performers ever.

  • The Mars Volta always rock out!

by fellowfreak on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

At this point, The Mars Volta have enough albums released to only play their best hits for a couple hours straight. It's thoroughly entertaining, but personally I miss the form of their earlier concerts in which they spent considerable time in between songs to just jam and solo around the whole band. It was at those times that the raw musicianship of the band's members really stood out. Still, it was an excellent concert and I have no real complaints. The light show and backdrop artwork was as crazy as ever. Definitely a must-see!!

  • cedric in the aisle- best show ever!!!

by just2MANYkicks on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

we got there super early, but saw nothing. Although i believe some of the crew went down to the jazz festival for fun because it was. The concert was the greatest. Our seats were very reasonable, i just wish people would have had the balls to bum rush and forget that their were (fold-up, removable) seats. We skipped around until the staff encounters became one too many and we were told to "stay in our seats or I'm gonna get the cop." When did it become wrong to want to enjoy a concert? during our skip around CEDRIC jumped in to the aisle and was singing, we all moved towards him. He was literally A FOOT away from me, AAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! That was the coolest thing ever, this has happened at other concerts i've been but the Mars Volta invokes a feeling in me that just makes me feel like i am one with the music. I LOVE THE MARS VOLTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by gigaslv1 on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I went to the mars volta concert held last night at the municipal auditorium in san antonio, tx it was an amazing show filled with light spectacles, great music, awesome solos from different members of the band, and unforgetable songs that only the biggest fans of mars volta would appreciate. I enjoyed myself thoroughly and I can't wait for them to come back.

  • we kept waiting for something to happen

by danishtexas on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

i expected a lot more at this show since it was held in a nice, and very intimate venue. didn't happen. there was a lot of mess going on in between songs and the musicians were just sloppy. we didn't have a good time at all and are sorry we spent so much on tickets. my fiance saw the mars volta 3 years ago in austin at a smaller venue and had a great time. he said that show was "amazing". my fiance and i spend every weekend at different music events and felt like we could've had a better time elsewhere. after the concert, we both agreed that we'll never spend money to see them play again.

  • The Mars Volta made my week!

by Jolene26 on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

The Mars Volta put on a GREAT show. Cedric kept the crowd entertained and even did a back bend at one point. The lighting on the backdrop was trippy and I loved it. My only complaint was that they didn't play one of my favorite songs, (Since We've Been Wrong).

  • Mars Volta was colorful and explosive

by zonbie on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The Mars Volta took the stage fifteen minutes late, but they stayed for a long time to make up for it. The lights went out and the huge manic art banner that defines them aesthetically began to sway dramatically back and forth. They opened with their trademark song - Intertiatic E.S.P., complete with Son Et Lumiere leading. Singer Cedric always seems to have his high points and low points when performing live, but he sounded great on this night. Guitarist Omar was the crowd favorite, as usual. Viscera Eyes allowed him to play one of his strongest, most confident riffs of the night. Ilyena broke down into a fifteen minute long jam, with Omar playing nearly deafening notes as Cedric whispered sweet nothings of doom into the crowd's ears. New songs from Octahedron were filtered into the set list and became more prominent as the night went on and their popular songs were out of the way and played. Teflon was introduced with Cedric ranting about dead presidents and White Houses. Drunkship of Lanterns, another flagship song of the band, sounded great and lasted a long time. Luciforms was probably the best song of the night because the band seemed to synchronize into a perfect unified sound in that moment. The concert was two hours long. Drummer Thomas tossed his sticks to the crowd and Cedric tossed a handful of ice. A young woman in a green dress ran on stage and tried to interact with Cedric, but his put up a hand in refusal and she floated away before security could grab her. This will be unforgettable for me, since it was my first time seeing them live.

  • mars volta made my ears bleed!

by strayrun33 on 9/20/09San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The show started promptly. The best part was no opening act. The Mars Volta played for about 2 hours non-stop. Did a nice mix of the old and new.
