About

Marcus King faces heartache, addiction, and mental health head-on in his music. Pain quakes below the vibrato of his voice, and his delivery weighs heavy with booze-drenched regrets and mistakes in lonely hotels. The GRAMMY® nominated fourth generation musician from Greenville, SC, started playing guitar at 8-years-old following in the footsteps of his guitarist Father and Grandpa. Logging thousands of miles on the road as "The Marcus King Band," he established himself with unparalleled performance prowess. During 2020, he linked up with Dan Auerbach and cut his solo debut El Dorado, garnering a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Americana Album." Between headlining venues, he performed alongside Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet, and Nathanial Rateliff in addition to gracing the bills of Stagecoach and more. He has launched various mental health initiatives, including a guitar auction collaboration with MusiCares. Now, his 2024 album Mood Swings feels like the moment of baptism when water washes away a life's worth of sins and degradation and all that's left is a revived, yet still real-as-hell primal scream. It's as if King strained raw soul straight from his gut up through that broken heart and on to the record under the watchful eye of Rick Rubin. Emphasizing his vocals front-and-center more than ever before, the trusty guitar he's so often associated with plays the sideman this time around (though there's no shortage of impressive shredding). For as dark as everything seemed, you can't help but feel a sense of hope in the power of Marcus's voice.

    Decibel Overload

by jc on 11/15/23Macon City Auditorium - Macon

Far too loud. Convinced that the sound techs didn’t check for levels nor distortions during the afternoon sound check. Artists were very talented; however, audience in the balcony couldn’t hear due to excessive volume and distortion.

    Underwhelmed

by LE on 11/14/23Macon City Auditorium - Macon

To start, I think Marcus King is a great singer and an even better guitar player. Unfortunately, the sound at this venue prevented those skills from shining through. I think this was partially because of the amps and partially because of poor acoustics at this venue. Additionally, the band seems to be very good, yet he plays over them constantly and doesn’t allow them time to shine. I would go to another concert of his to see if the live sound was better, but I wouldn’t want to pay much for tickets. All in all, I was pretty disappointed with this show.

Nacho ordinary stand and play show

by TA on 11/11/23Jannus Live - St Petersburg

This dude and his band like to jam and that is exactly what they brought. It was a special treat bringing out Betts and throwing down an Allman Brothers mash up. Highly recommend going to a Marcus King show. This will not be my last.

    Stage Presence

by RobinFL on 11/10/23Jannus Live - St Petersburg

Marcus King is dumpy, baby faced, was wearing an unflattering and not good looking outfit, and as soon as he picks up a guitar and opens his mouth you forget all about that. This guy radiates stage presence like crazy, shines like the brightest star. If you like his music even a little bit, go to the show. Way more of a live act than recording artist. Opening act Joshua Ray Walker also a recommend. Enormous guy with a voice to match and a big heart.

    Another great show by MKB

by Cpt. Lars on 11/10/23Jannus Live - St Petersburg

Once again, Marcus King and his band blew the crowd away with an unbelievable show. And having Dickie Bett's son Duane come out for the encore of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was nothing short of phenomenal. First act was solid as well, and the only complaint I have is that the show did not start until 8:05, which is a long time to stand in one spot when the first act was supposed to start at 7. Oh well, small price to bay for a great evening of true Southern Cookin'!

    Not great

by Deb on 11/10/23Jannus Live - St Petersburg

The Venue was oversold, I couldn't really hear the band very well where I was and couldn't improve my situation. Been to Jannus Landing for shows for over 30 years . I think that was my last if they are going to pack us in like that . I'm guessing the band was good

    He plays fast

by Steve on 11/10/23Jannus Live - St Petersburg

I went mainly to see Drew Smithers his "new"2nd guitar player. We were on the stage left side of stage & could barely see Drew as there was some silly light stack in front of him. I only really enjoyed the encore set when Duane Betts came out & played some AB tunes. There was also a loud humming coming from the PA system at Jannus Live. I hope they get that fixed by tomorrow as we are scheduled to see Blackberry Smoke there.

Best Marcus set in a while

by Support Live Music on 11/10/23Jannus Live - St Petersburg

He never disappoints. Saw him in Richmond with Charley Crockett 3 months ago and the show was completely different. Played old, current and not yet released music. Amazing set list. Venue was a bit oversold though for Jannus. Otherwise, couldn’t beat that for a mid week concert.

    Great Music!

by Katie on 11/10/23Jannus Live - St Petersburg

Marcus King and his opener were amazing!! Although, this will be the last time I attend a show at Jannus Live. The venue is consistently over sold and you spend the entire show getting stepped on, knocked into and drinks spilled all over you. People are rude when you try making your way through the crowd just to get to the restroom. Again, great show but would love if larger shows could be booked at larger venues.

    Disappointing

by G Funk on 11/10/23Jannus Live - St Petersburg

The sound man needs to be fired! The kick drum was twice as loud as everything else. The lower end keyboard and Bass was so muddy, I could see the bass players fingers moving but all I could hear was monotone mud. Someone on stage had a bad cord. I heard the hum throughout the night, while they were playing and in between songs. Finally, I could barely hear Marcus sing and his guitar was way too low in the mix. I walked out after 5 songs...
