THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER IN CONCERT:

Big Apple jazz fusionists and a cappella masters The Manhattan Transfer have been putting their one-of-a-kind spin on vocal music since the late '70s, and they continue to wow in concert with swinging sets full of playful covers and funky originals. After the passing of singer and founding member Tim Hauser in 2014, booming bass/baritone Trist Curless of LA-based a cappella group m-pact stepped in to fill his shoes – and he's a perfect fit. In concert the band is an electrifying embodiment of their upbeat downtown sound, bopping around while they deliver their pitch-perfect vocals and encouraging fans to clap along to the jazzy rhythms of their ace drummer. The group's signature guy-girl vocal interplay sounds fresher than ever, and ticket buyers lucky enough to see them work their magic will be humming favorites like "The Boy from New York City" and "Route 66" all the way home.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The Manhattan Transfer was formed in 1969 by Tim Hauser and an early lineup that appeared on the group's 1971 debut album Jukin'. Hauser parted ways with the band's first incarnation a few years later, and in 1975 he and a new roster released The Manhattan Transfer's self-titled sophomore album. The record was a critical and commercial success, cracking the Top 40 on the Billboard 200 and earning the group their first hit with the song "Operator." A string of popular singles followed in the late '70s and early '80s including "Chanson D'Amour" and "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone," and in 1982 The Manhattan Transfer became the first group to win Grammys in both the popular and jazz categories ("The Boy From New York City" won Best Pop Performance and "Until I Met You" took home Best Jazz Performance). The Grammy buzz continued in 1985 when their eighth album Vocalese earned 12 nominations, nearly beating Michael Jackson's Thriller for most nominations ever received by a single album. The group maintained a prolific release schedule throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 1998 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Hauser and company released six albums during the '00s including An Acapella Christmas and The Chick Corea Songbook, but in 2014 Hauser passed away from a heart attack. Singer Trist Curless stepped in to take his place shortly afterward, and the new lineup continues to honor the band's hallowed vocal legacy with rousing performances on tour.

    Incredible experience

by GSD on 10/15/22State Theatre - Minneapolis

No need to "cut some slack" for the age factor. This group is as vibrant as always. The Diva orchestra was pure big band delight and the smaller ensemble performed admirably. For those of us who have been fans for 50 years this concert reinforced our delight tinged with some regret that this is apparently their fine farewell.

    Vocal Jazz lovers retreat

by CMS on 10/15/22State Theatre - Minneapolis

The show was very well performed, well lit, and had just the right ambiance for each of the tunes this group did. I loved the Il Divo orchestra ( and all women instrumentalists!) doing the instrumental backing up for the group too! Thanks MT for the memories!

I grew up listening to The Manhattan Transfer and have loved them for years. That being said I went to the concert with some grace as they are older (so am I), but they did not disappoint!! They had GREAT energy and sounded pretty amazing!! If you get a chance GO SEE THEM! AMAZING!

    Manhattan Transfer-good as ever!

by Stevo on 10/15/22State Theatre - Minneapolis

Good concert -the MH still has the energy and voices that I last heard many years ago - We had lower level tickets -last row -not what l perceived from chart? The usher offered us , without us asking-seats further up In center . Appreciated ! The sound quality was good but the lighting guys just weren’t following the script - Late with spots to solos . Etc Good to be back at the State!

    Great show after the intermission

by mbholm on 10/15/22State Theatre - Minneapolis

I thought the sound mixing was terrible during the first part of the show before the intermission. It seemed the vocals were buried in the mix and had too much effects which just caused it to sound muddy. I overheard others complaining about it too during the intermission. "We came to hear the vocals" I heard someone say. However, after the intermission, the sound was much better and the vocals were clearer. The backing band was great and the DIVA Orchestra was also great. So, I loved it. Just wish I could re-hear the before-intermission part with the after-intermission sound.

    Somewhat Disappointing

by Judy on 3/31/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

Why did we come? Old Manhattan hits! Old hits were largely missing & new music was not so unappreciated. Those seated near me seemed to share my lack of enthusiasm. All were very disappointed that “Operator” was never preformed. A nice evening, but not memorable.

    Fabulous!

by Terry on 3/31/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

Everything from parking to the final encore went smoothly. The Parker is a wonderful place to see a show of quality music. The Manhattan Transfer were incredible. Every song was sung with their love of music attached. I wanted more. Then leaving via my car went as smoothly as arrival. No long lines to exit.

by R. S. on 3/31/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

Best I've seen in years. You know it's good when no-one is on their phone. Everyone listening to the music and watching the performance. The way it should be enjoyed

    Disappointed

by Kjh on 3/30/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

The harmonies were beautiful, obviously the voices are not what they were 30 years ago but still lovely. Very disappointed in the fact that very few of the well-known songs were performed.

Manhattan Transfer as Good As Ever

by Dollarbill on 3/30/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

They still have timing and flair for the dramatic at a concert at the Fort Lauderdale's fabled Parker Playhouse on Sunday, March 27, 2022. There was so much audeince anticipation and cheers for their favorite MT hits that it coiuld have been a Jimmy Buffet concert..all right .minus the wildT-shirts and other branded items. But the group sounded as good as their 10 Grammys wouyd suggest as they marked their 50th anniversary. The backing band of bass (stand-up and electric), drums and piano made you feel you were right in the studio with them. Fantasic performance.

    Good show

by Dflddon on 3/30/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

The show was good but the sound in the hall was not the best. They harmonized well and we’re entertaining while chatting in between songs. Very disappointed that they didn’t sing Operator!

    Great night!

by acapellover on 11/18/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

This was a great concert; a pair of stellar groups that worked really well together - Manhattan Transfer AND Take 6. MT and T6 sang separately and together. I think they covered most of their respective big hits. There was a lovely small group piece (2 from each group) that was perfection. T6's Mark Kibble is a standout soloist. Members of T6 even got on instruments at one point. The band was also skilled - in particular the pianist and bassist. VERY enjoyable evening!

    Manhattan Transfer

by V. N. on 11/14/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

I have seen Manhattan Transfer several times in the past and have always enjoyed the performance. In the past Take Six was the opening act for them. This time, Manhattan Transfer seemed to incorporate Take Six as it was part of the performance leaving the audience without Manhattan Transfer singing the usual amount of songs they have performed alone in the past. If this is going to be the way the future shows are arranged, I will no longer attend.
