THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER IN CONCERT:

Big Apple jazz fusionists and a cappella masters The Manhattan Transfer have been putting their one-of-a-kind spin on vocal music since the late '70s, and they continue to wow in concert with swinging sets full of playful covers and funky originals. After the passing of singer and founding member Tim Hauser in 2014, booming bass/baritone Trist Curless of LA-based a cappella group m-pact stepped in to fill his shoes – and he's a perfect fit. In concert the band is an electrifying embodiment of their upbeat downtown sound, bopping around while they deliver their pitch-perfect vocals and encouraging fans to clap along to the jazzy rhythms of their ace drummer. The group's signature guy-girl vocal interplay sounds fresher than ever, and ticket buyers lucky enough to see them work their magic will be humming favorites like "The Boy from New York City" and "Route 66" all the way home.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The Manhattan Transfer was formed in 1969 by Tim Hauser and an early lineup that appeared on the group's 1971 debut album Jukin'. Hauser parted ways with the band's first incarnation a few years later, and in 1975 he and a new roster released The Manhattan Transfer's self-titled sophomore album. The record was a critical and commercial success, cracking the Top 40 on the Billboard 200 and earning the group their first hit with the song "Operator." A string of popular singles followed in the late '70s and early '80s including "Chanson D'Amour" and "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone," and in 1982 The Manhattan Transfer became the first group to win Grammys in both the popular and jazz categories ("The Boy From New York City" won Best Pop Performance and "Until I Met You" took home Best Jazz Performance). The Grammy buzz continued in 1985 when their eighth album Vocalese earned 12 nominations, nearly beating Michael Jackson's Thriller for most nominations ever received by a single album. The group maintained a prolific release schedule throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 1998 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Hauser and company released six albums during the '00s including An Acapella Christmas and The Chick Corea Songbook, but in 2014 Hauser passed away from a heart attack. Singer Trist Curless stepped in to take his place shortly afterward, and the new lineup continues to honor the band's hallowed vocal legacy with rousing performances on tour.

    Manhattan Transfer

    by Terrin B on 1/16/23

Manhattan Transfer: (please let me preface this review with the fact that I am a semi professional musician ) my wife and I were sitting in the middle of the audience halfway back center stage. I felt like the seats should be pretty good for acoustics and right at the start of the show I could tell but the sound was not right. When you have a show that supposed to feature vocals to vocal should be out front and the band should be background. The band was either too loud or the vocals were not loud enough but you could not hear the vocals very well. You would think that they would do a proper soundtrack at a venue like that so overall I was disappointed in the concert even though the performance was very good. The musicians were excellent! All female orchestra was top notch and the rhythm section was really good as well. I am glad that we went for nostalgia because I was a big fan of Manhattan Transfer.

    - MT back in fine form

by Nigel on 1/16/23Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

They’re back! Nice to see Alan and Janis together again. The other two members filled their roles beautifully. The Diva Orchestra blew the night over the top. The first act had the most appeal to the original fans featuring almost the entire first album tunes from 1972. All the hits that brought this act to fame. The second act featured their vocalese jazz tunes and made the band shine. I think they would greatly benefit from a good choreographer and a costume designer. It would strengthen their stage appeal. But they were great! Happy 50th!

    Could of been better

by J.H. on 1/16/23Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

The group as always, was great. The issue for my wife and I, was the sound-board engineer. The 1st half of the show, (before intermission) we could not make out the vocals. Lyrics were unintelligible. Audio improved, somewhat, in the 2nd half. My wife stated that at the intermission, she overheard many women listeners in the restroom complaining of the same thing. It was shame, but we powered through it. The venue should really try to correct this, since we plan to attend future events there.

    50th Anniversary Tour is Great

by Peter on 1/16/23Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

Manhattan Transfer 50th featured a full production at the Parker Playhouse with a cast of 20 including the Diva Jazz Orchestra and some unique memories. Make no mistake, their acapella days are behind them, and age is showing, but if not at their very top, they are just a bit below.

    Manhattan Transfer in fine form

by Espoc on 1/16/23Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

This was one of the best concerts in years! The vocal arrangements were complex and stunning, their band is tight and spot on, the Diva Orchestra is faultless. The audio-visual retrospective was also very interesting. If I had to nitpick, I'd say the sound was less than ideal, a little muddy towards the back, next to the sound booth. A little more clarity and separation would've benefited the experience. On the whole, a fabulous evening!

    Good but not great…

by Luis J. on 1/16/23Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

The MT performance was excellent, no doubt the group is going strong with 50 years of success. The problem was the acoustics, the sound quality was not up to par (we were in the center of the theater…)

    Great concert

by JA on 10/19/22Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

This was the first time that I had seen The Manhattan Transfer in concert. They did not disappoint! Also, the between their vocals and the 14-piece Diva Jazz Orchestra was perfect. Congratulations to the sound designer and the performers for getting that right.

Great show, not so great sound

by TR on 10/18/22State Theatre - Minneapolis

The Manhattan Transfer put on a great show. They still have it! My only complaint is the sound system. The mix is what you'd expect at First Avenue for a rave - bass simply overpowering everything and the vocals nearly impossible to hear. I was in the 5th row - should be great seats - and regretted not bringing ear plugs. Who thinks to bring earplugs to a Manhattan Transfer concert?! The couple next to me left at intermission because they couldn't hear the actual singing. Really too bad.

First time seeing them and can't believe I waited this long. They did not miss a beat! Awesome show!!! Also, The Diva Jazz Band was incredible. Came home and downloaded their CD. They now have a new fan! First time I've been to the Centre Theater, and it definitely will not be my last.

    Acoustics

by Gus on 10/18/22Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

My listening experience wasn't great. I was sitting in the balcony seats and the sounds were indistinguishable. The orchestra overwhelmed the singers and I just heard a lot of screaming! After the concert I listened to some of their music online where, I realized, I missed so much due to the acoustics. Needless to say, I was disappointed.

    Great performance, dubious sound mix

by Rdwten on 10/16/22State Theatre - Minneapolis

I attended the Manhattan Transfer concert which was high energy and well produced in general. Sat the first half in the balcony, where the quartets vocals were almost completely buried by the instruments. In the second half moved down to the main floor, and the voices were very present in the mix. A story of two halves I guess.

So I thrilled to see my favorite Vocal Performance Group

by Val on 10/16/22Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

This is my third time hearing & seeing this multi-talented vocal group - The Manhattan Transfer. I was first given the opportunity to coordinate their Music Publicity for the William Morris Theatrical Agency in S. CA in the late 1970s. I’ve been a loyal fan of their’s ever since.

    Spectacular

by Gary on 10/16/22Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

This was all we could hope for in their 50th and final year. They sang all of the "oldies but goodies" and it took me back to the first time I ever heard them live. Enjoyed it immensely. Thank you for the memories Manhattan Transfer. ♥️

Music great, sound not so much

by Black Buffalo on 10/16/22State Theatre - Minneapolis

The Manhattan Transfer, their band, and the Diva Orchestra were amazing! Unfortunately, during the first half of the performance the sound engineer didn’t have everything balanced and the musicians were drowning out the vocals. Even several instruments were too load, overwhelming the other. Fortunately, after the intermission everything was corrected and sounded great.
