THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER IN CONCERT:

Big Apple jazz fusionists and a cappella masters The Manhattan Transfer have been putting their one-of-a-kind spin on vocal music since the late '70s, and they continue to wow in concert with swinging sets full of playful covers and funky originals. After the passing of singer and founding member Tim Hauser in 2014, booming bass/baritone Trist Curless of LA-based a cappella group m-pact stepped in to fill his shoes – and he's a perfect fit. In concert the band is an electrifying embodiment of their upbeat downtown sound, bopping around while they deliver their pitch-perfect vocals and encouraging fans to clap along to the jazzy rhythms of their ace drummer. The group's signature guy-girl vocal interplay sounds fresher than ever, and ticket buyers lucky enough to see them work their magic will be humming favorites like "The Boy from New York City" and "Route 66" all the way home.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The Manhattan Transfer was formed in 1969 by Tim Hauser and an early lineup that appeared on the group's 1971 debut album Jukin'. Hauser parted ways with the band's first incarnation a few years later, and in 1975 he and a new roster released The Manhattan Transfer's self-titled sophomore album. The record was a critical and commercial success, cracking the Top 40 on the Billboard 200 and earning the group their first hit with the song "Operator." A string of popular singles followed in the late '70s and early '80s including "Chanson D'Amour" and "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone," and in 1982 The Manhattan Transfer became the first group to win Grammys in both the popular and jazz categories ("The Boy From New York City" won Best Pop Performance and "Until I Met You" took home Best Jazz Performance). The Grammy buzz continued in 1985 when their eighth album Vocalese earned 12 nominations, nearly beating Michael Jackson's Thriller for most nominations ever received by a single album. The group maintained a prolific release schedule throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 1998 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Hauser and company released six albums during the '00s including An Acapella Christmas and The Chick Corea Songbook, but in 2014 Hauser passed away from a heart attack. Singer Trist Curless stepped in to take his place shortly afterward, and the new lineup continues to honor the band's hallowed vocal legacy with rousing performances on tour.

    Exciting performance!

by Dan O on 11/12/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

My wife and I really enjoyed The Manhattan Transfer and Take 6 at KCA. It was one of the most exciting musical events we have ever attended. Both of these groups are terrific. Great singing, outstanding harmony, enthusiasm overflowing, and a ton of talent. Also, the non-vocal musicians were also great. The mimicking of musical instruments with the voice was fantastic. And it was clear they were having a good time up on stage. I like the way the two groups complemented each other--and the competition/imitation shtik. The prices were also family-affordable.

by C DIVA G on 11/12/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

IT WAS A FANTASTIC EVENING EXPERIENCE OF TOTAL HARMONY. A NICE INTIMATE TIME WITH THE TRANSFER AND GREAT COLLEGE MEMORIES WHEN TAKE 6 CAME ON THE SCENE. A WONDERFUL EVENING OF "THE SUMMIT"!!

    Disappointed

by J. on 11/12/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

The sound balance was way off--the music was so loud and forceful that it was difficult to hear the Manhattan Transfer singers and impossible to make out the words to anything they were singing. I guess this type of music is better heard in a smaller, more intimate venue.

    Great Show

by Musiqlvr on 11/12/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

I have seen Take 6 several times, and they never fail to disappoint. Manhattan Transfer added a touch of the "Oldies but Goodies" flavor with a touch of levity. Thoroughly, enjoyed the show.

    A Wonderful Musical Experience

by D. T. on 11/12/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

The Summit: Manhattan Transfer Meets Take 6 was a wonderful musical experience. Manhattan Transfer was the first Jazz Vocal Ensemble I was exposed to and loved their harmonic expressions. Then Take 6 came along and took Vocal Ensembles to a whole new level. And to hear the both of these groups on stage together was musical heaven. When they took turns singing snippets of each others songs was excellent. I am glad I bought tickets to experience this Summit and hope that they come together on stage real soon!!!

by R. N. on 11/12/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

The show was wonderful. The seats and sightlines were great. Both groups performed together and separetly and the music was phenomenol. Brought me back 30-40 years. I have m,any original vinyl that I play a lot. No complaints. even the wine "sip cups" were great. Would recoomend the artists and venue.

    Not a good experience

by N. on 11/12/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

Poor sound system caused everything to sound too loud and muffled. Could not make out words or enjoy the music. Couldn’t wait for it to end.

    Joyful Performance

by Princess E on 11/12/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

Great to see both groups on one bill. Only downside was sound for Manhattan Transfer. Microphones for them made words almost unintelligible and music levels were too high further making it difficult to clearly decipher the lyrics. Only because of my familiarity with Manhattan Transfer’s songbook, was I able to follow the songs being performed. Although I did not mention this to my companion, he mentioned the same problem as we left the venue , so it was apparent to someone else as well. On the other hand, there was no such problem with the audio for Take 6. Their performance was was clear, the audio was well balanced and the band was properly modulated to support their voices. The sound check was not well done for Manhattan Transfer.

    Like a fine vintage wine

by Parisnoir on 11/12/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

The performers were excellent. They delivered the timeless tunes you remember just like they did years ago. Great energy and performance. Also the parking was perfect and the seats had lots of room.

    Great place

by Drea on 11/12/19Kupferberg Center for the Arts - Queens

First time at this venue. Bus stopped in front of the place. Easy to enter and exit with plenty of helpful ushers. Had an orchestra seat which was extremely comfortable. The acoustics were great and I was so amazed to see Take 6 for the first time. Been a fan since this first album. No complaints from me especially since the metro stopped right in front of the place

Great Night of Fun and Good Music

    by D. C. on 9/4/19Birchmere - Alexandria

The Transfer introduced us to their new CD by featuring songs from CD. Purchased CD. They took us on a musical journey from the beginning of their career up to current songs. Put a new spend on some old tunes. We enjoyed the new arrangements. The Transfer are always at the top of their game in their performances. This time was no different. They featured Chris in lead more this time and it was a great experience musically. The audience wasn't ready for them to leave the stage, we were having such a great time.

    The Great Manhattan Transfer!

by mememe on 8/27/19Birchmere - Alexandria

I had to wait an hour and a half in the rain to ensure I got a good seat number, but it was so worth it! We sat right next to the stage. The Manhattan Transfer and their backing band were absolutely awesome! This was a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience and we truly loved every minute of it!

    So entertaining!

by Fun! on 8/26/19Birchmere - Alexandria

The show itself was great! This group is so very entertaining! It is amazing what they can do vocally! So much talent! The Birchmere is a great venue for this type of intimate show. The only downside is the musty smell of the venue itself.

    Best Concert Ever!!!!!

by Cindy on 7/17/19The Rose - Pasadena

It’s difficult to express just how phenomenal this concert was. I’ve been a long time fan of both Manhattan Transfer and Take 6. But whoever had the idea to put the two groups together is an absolute genius. Their styles and sounds are unique, yet so similar that they blend seamlessly. The energetic rhythms, the flawless harmonies and the sheer joy of the music made this concert the absolute best I’ve ever attended. In addition, the intimacy of the venue made it that much more enjoyable. Only one negative comment: if I were to attend this venue again, I would not sit at a table. Sitting at a table comes with a requirement to purchase dinner. They don’t do dinner very well. They seemed rather unorganized. It was difficult to get questions answered as our server was not very knowledgeable. She would leave to find out the answer and then not return for 10 minutes. They were unable to accommodate simple requests, like extra bacon on a salad. Just a disappointing meal. On a scale of 1 to 10? Concert 10, dinner 4.

Too much Take 6, not enough Manhattan Transfer.

    by S. on 7/16/19The Rose - Pasadena

Terrible opening act, H'atin, not compatible with this music. MT was great, but not enough singing on their own. Take 6 was great also, but too much from them.

    Disappointing Experience

    by H. Robert Dittmer on 4/16/19Potawatomi Hotel & Casino/Northern Lights Theater/Event Center - Milwaukee

Thuis was the the sixth time I have attended a Manhattan Transfer concert. They are one of my favorite music groups as I am a big fan of vocal jazz. I had previously seen them at this venue, the Northern Lights Theater several years ago when they presented their holiday concert. That event was outstanding in every aspect, this one not at all. The majority of the problems centered on the sound mixing. Since I am a musician who has had substantial experience in music production, I was aghast at the horrendous mix produced that evening. The result of the sound problems was an entirely out of balance "roar". That was most unpleasant and completely diminished the vocal intricacies of the Transfer. I was sitting in the balcony as I was for their aforementioned previous concert when the mix was fine. I only hope that the first level patrons heard something better than I did.

    sound issues

    by C. on 4/14/19Potawatomi Hotel & Casino/Northern Lights Theater/Event Center - Milwaukee

Enjoyed the group--have seen them multiple times over the years! This venue, however, has sound issues--it was so loud that the table vibrated! but still had difficulty hearing vocal lyrics. This has been an issue at other shows I have attended at the Northern Lights Theatre. Too bad as I like the size and layout of the theatre but have had guests leave before shows are over to escape the noise. have tried sitting in different areas and it doesn't make much of a difference.

    Great show

    by StretchMeister on 4/14/19Potawatomi Hotel & Casino/Northern Lights Theater/Event Center - Milwaukee

After all these years they still hit all the notes. Well orchestrated show. Fast paced. Very entertaining from start to finish. Loved it.
