About

THE LAST SHIP is a new musical with an original score by 16-time Grammy Award winner Sting. Inspired by Sting's own childhood experiences, this World Premiere production features direction by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Wicked), a book by Tony Award winner John Logan (Red) and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal) and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Once).

THE LAST SHIP is set in the English seafaring town of Wallsend, a close-knit community where life has always revolved around the local shipyard and the hardworking men construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. But Gideon Fletcher dreams of a different future. He sets out to travel the world, leaving his life and his love behind. When Gideon returns home 14 years later, he finds the shipyard's future in grave danger and his childhood sweetheart engaged to someone else. As the men of Wallsend take their future into their own hands and build a towering representation of the shared dream that defines their existence, Gideon realizes that he left behind more than he could have ever imagined.

THE LAST SHIP is a portrait of a community so bound together by passion, faith and tradition, they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known.

    THE LAST SHIP Soars!

by Scottact on 6/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

I've been going to musicals for over 30 years (and have appeared in some as well) and I have not been so entranced and excited by one since I saw WICKED. Hands down, the first act of this show is one of, if not the, best first act of a musical I've ever seen. The music is terrific (and lest you think it's all new like I did, wait until the end of the first act for an old favorite that made me tear up in the way it was used). The story and book of the show is gripping and I loved all the characters. The acting and singing is superb and the choreography is right in tune with a piece about shipyard workers-very aggressive and masculine and never falls into musical theatre dance! The second act could use a little tightening. It seems to be a little bit of filler to keep the story going when it could be wrapped up much quicker. But, other than that, this is a great piece of theatre.

Overall, we were disappointed. First, our seats had been selected as "best available" and we're not labeled as "restricted view" when in fact the overhang was so low that we only saw the lower half of the stage. Disappointing. The quality of the acting/singing was good, which makes sense as a pre-broadway cast will be deeper in talent. My husband thought the choreography was juvenile, quality of a good high school group. The songs were rather disappointing. While they were original and an improvement over typical Broadway fare (which we typically avoid), there was too much boot slapping which almost looked like a Western line dance (which we also avoid).

    Hypnotic

by Doc3912 on 6/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

I found the music from The Last Ship living in my mind long after the show was over. As I am entering this review it is in my head. As we saw the show in preview, I know it will get cut a little here and there to tighten it up. I feel the core is present for an excellent run, but the edges are a bit rough right now. The voices are spot on and beautiful.

    A pleasant surprise!

by bolanga on 6/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Thanks to Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune for labeling this musical experience "interesting" so that I finally bought a ticket. It was a very pleasant surprise with great music and superb casting. The time flew by and I was impressed so many times by how well the play flowed.

    Last Ship Sailed!

by pcabd on 6/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Storyline was good, a bit slow in parts, but good. Music very "Sting" (which is a good thing), Actors very good, glad everyone stayed true to accents. Singing terrific. Been awhile since I have been around British accents, so not all "conversation" was caught. Choreography seemed a touch off - movements did not always make sense. All in all very enjoyable.

    Surprised and Delighted

by Kvalz on 6/14/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

I have to admit I was hesitant to go see The Last Ship. While I am a Sting fan, I just wasn’t sure if I would enjoy a production that takes place in a shipyard and a story about a community mourning the loss of their identity and livelihood. As I debated, I thought that I did enjoy Cats, which took place in a junk yard alley and is based around felines, neither of which I am fan of. So a shipyard and people seemed promising. I am so glad that I went, as this production was wonderfully rich and entertaining. It was a blend of beautiful songs and emotional journeys of characters that captivated us from beginning to end. The cast was amazingly talented. Loved “August Winds” and “What Say You, Meg?” “Show Some Respect” was fun and kept our feet tapping along. You won’t be disappointed, so go see it. I’m even tempted to go see it one more time before it leaves Chicago.

    The Last Ship was exquisite

by jen1128 on 6/14/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

I saw the first ever performance of Sting's new musical The Last Ship. I have seen many musicals and this one rates near the top of my list. Gorgeous and exquisite music, heartfelt story, all of the actors are hugely talented and gifted singers. A beautiful story from start to finish. Highly recommend. Sting is a musical genius.

    auspicious beginning

by 4Nsics on 6/14/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

first performance jitters and staging issues aside, The Last Ship promises to shape into a very Seaworthy and Broadway worthy musical. the songs by sting sounded great and included some old favorites as well as his new material. The story has all the elements that with a bit of tweaking (no not twerking) should tighten the story and narrative of the several plots. Some standout voices and acting make this nascent show well worth the investment and should be enjoyed by those who are not already familiar with Sting's music.

    The last bridge was great

by Shrimpershelley on 6/14/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The songs were good , sets a bit gray, but it was a ship yard after all. Was a tad long, almost 3 hours. But worth it!

    Story needs Much Work

by Culver on 6/14/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Vocal singing was lovely and masterful,, staging and lighting is fantastic, but the story is not poignant or memorable and the start of the second act is out of place and drags on. Men's group dancing is odd, slow and funny. With a supposed Irish casting, where was a gig particularly in the bar scenes?

Next year's Tony for Best Musical

by Dak22 on 6/14/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

I'm not normally a big Sting fan, but the music and lyrics were brilliant. The choreography was perfect, the acting and singing we're flawless, and it was truly an amazing evening of a powerful story told in music and dance. The show ended with an enthusiastic standing ovation, which I was happy to be a part of.

    The Last Ship was Fantastic!

by Roci94 on 6/13/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

From the moment the show begins the audience is engaged with the actors, the set design and the lighting. The score by Sting is wonderful and they have added a couple of his old tunes that follow the storyline. There was just one moment that felt awkward and that was late in the second act. Since it was opening night, I'm sure they will work that out. The ending was glorious!

    Excellent production

by Anonymous on 6/13/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

We went on opening night. Expected to be disappointed but was pleasantly surprised. The musical sounds like it would be depressing but had some light moments. Also, had some very touching moments. The acting and singing were wonderful. The only reason I did not give it five stars was because I thought it was a little long and I thought the actor who played Jackie White needed to portray his character with more animation and he needed to project his voice more. He was hard to hear at times. The set was awesome. The show has some big name backing and a highly acclaimed list of people working on it. I think they will continue to tweak it until it hits Broadway. Thoroughly enjoyed it!! See it while it is still in Chicago.

    Accent difficult to understand

by ChicagoBigEater on 6/13/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Lost in translation. This musical would be better understood by people living in Britain due to the accent and references to places that most American would not have heard of like Tenerife.

The Last Ship is a winner!

by DeltaForce61 on 6/13/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The Last Ship was a fun play with outstanding music and a cast that looked like they truly were enjoying themselves. I think the play was probably more enjoyable after watching Sting's PBS special on this, although many of the songs from the special did not make it to the play. The stage props were appropriate and the scene changes were done in a mostly non-obtrusive way. Father O'Brien was great and the other characters did a great job. All in all, a very enjoyable experience.
