About

THE LAST SHIP is a new musical with an original score by 16-time Grammy Award winner Sting. Inspired by Sting's own childhood experiences, this World Premiere production features direction by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Wicked), a book by Tony Award winner John Logan (Red) and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal) and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Once).

THE LAST SHIP is set in the English seafaring town of Wallsend, a close-knit community where life has always revolved around the local shipyard and the hardworking men construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. But Gideon Fletcher dreams of a different future. He sets out to travel the world, leaving his life and his love behind. When Gideon returns home 14 years later, he finds the shipyard's future in grave danger and his childhood sweetheart engaged to someone else. As the men of Wallsend take their future into their own hands and build a towering representation of the shared dream that defines their existence, Gideon realizes that he left behind more than he could have ever imagined.

THE LAST SHIP is a portrait of a community so bound together by passion, faith and tradition, they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known.

    Thank you Sting!

We had the best time at The Last Ship! The music was amazing as were the actors. Bonus was that Sting came on stage afterwards and talked and sang.

    Lovely and Poignant

by SBXmugcollector on 7/16/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The music and storyline tugged at your heart from the start to the finish. You felt as though you could relate to this town of people who didn't want to leave their heritage for future changes in their lives. Before the curtain call, I was already planning to give this show a glowing review. To top it all off, Sting appeared out of the pit and welcomed Chicago to his masterpiece and performed for us. I would see it again gladly.

    The Last Ship was exceptional

by Triumphant1 on 7/16/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The music was very, very good and I am not a fan of musicals, on the whole. Interesting story, well told, well played. All the sets were simple but extremely effective. I admit that I went because my wife wanted to see it, but I was won over myself on its own merits and overall experience. Very interesting story and it didn't hurt that it was based on real life.

    Fabulous show

by MMMCole on 7/16/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

We LOVED the show. After some fine-tuning I'm sure it will be a huge hit on Broadway. It coould probably pare out a song or two. I didn't find Gideon a very sympathetic character, but that made it easier to be happy when Meg stayed with Arthur. Tom was terrific; his harmonizing with Gideon was magic. The priest stole the show whenever on stage. We'll see it again when it opens in NYC. The cherry on the top for this performance was when Sting appeared on stage after the show, thanking the Chicago theatergoers. Very heartwarming comments. Terrific music, fabulous staging, great cast. Really loved it.

Entertaining show. Nothing really great, no show stoppers, but a good show. Cant wait to see if they make changes for Broadway. Effects at the end were excellent.

The Last Ship, engaging new musical.

by ANori on 7/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The Last Ship kept even my teenaged boys interested and singing the songs on the way home. A slow introduction number quickly turns into feet-stomping pieces with beautifully choreographed ballads.

    The Last Ship was Unforgettable

by PCOFF on 7/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Our group of twelve loved the play. I am surprised the reviews have not mentioned the Catholic priest and the centrality of the community-life, nourished by scripture and the priest. It isn't often that a priest is a likeable figure in the media. The music and pace of the show was also excellent. Best wishes as you move to Broadway!

    The Last Ship was exceptional

by Schrody on 7/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed The Last Ship. In my opinion it started out a little slow but soon had me pulled into the story and music. I gave the show a 4 star rating because I don't consider it the best show I have seen. However, my wife would give it a 5 and thinks it is the best if not top 2 show she has seen. The story line was not totally predictable which kept your interest and the music by Sting was wonderful. Very enjoyable and we would definitely recommend it to others.

    The Last Ship: Bland

by AlexinAurora on 7/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Although the music in general was good, the story dragged. It needed more emotion. There was a sense of dispair for the shipyard being closed down. However, you never got the sense of renewed purpose for building that last ship. The characters don't really help the story. There was no emotional buy in to building the last ship; they came off as wishy-washy. It just seemed like building the last ship was something for them to do to pass the time. The lead character Gideon had a lot of baggage and no real purpose. He doesn't inspire the town people, he just has the experience of how to navigate a ship. The character of Meg is torn between her teenage love Gideon and her current boyfriend Arthur, which she really doesn't seem to have very deep feelings for either of them. The shipyard's union leader Jackie gives the impression he is dragged into buildiing the last ship. His leadership for building the last ship feels more like he was elected as a jury foreman than a man with a purpose. The character of Arthur was confusing. It felt like the writers didn't know if they wanted people to like him or hate him. The best character is Father O'Brien. He was the only character to have some sense of purpose. If they can make a few tweeks in the characters and flow of the story, it can work. For this run in Chicago, it was bland.

It's a great show, really more like an opera. The voices are very good. -- The staging, also, was very strong.

    The Last Ship was amazing!

by Chicagomusical on 7/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Only been to one other prebroadway show in Chicago and was disappointed. Needless to say that one never made it to Broadway. With that in mind, I did not have high expectations for The Last Ship. I had heard the reviews and my daughter saw it first. She came home and said it was one of the best musicals she has seen. We got tickets and were not disappointed. We saw it the day before it left Chicago. The score by Sting, actors, sets, lighting and choregraphy were spectactular! I am still humming a few of the tunes in my head. Looking forward to hearing the reviews in New York in October. Can't wait until the cast album comes out. (Hopefully soon!) Broadway quality!

    The Last Ship

by Robwht on 7/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

We travelled from OKC to Chicago to see The Last Ship because we enjoyed Sting's album. Having read a good amount about the production, we expected that the show would have a different track list than the album. We were not disappointed! Meg's journey was the heart of the story. Her relationships with Young Gideon, Tom, Arthur, and an older sometimes-wiser Gideon wove into a compelling story. Until the last moment, I was unsure how her story would resolve. Then, I cheered! The community of shipyard builders was bound by purpose. As the shipyard was closing, they were brought together by the faith of Peggy White and Father O’Brien. There was tenderness and joy amidst a good deal of sorrow as the men faced the loss of work that had defined their town for generations. Special effects were wonderful! I could almost smell the beer! And I definitely smelled the welding torches. Sound and light were seamless. The simplicity of set design was enhanced by the energetic climbing of the actors, and minimal gimmicks. Choreography was energetic and authentic. The Shipyard Builders moved well in their boots but never abandoned the brawny stance of men who worked hard every day. It was a treat to see women of a variety of body styles on the stage! Do not miss the post-intermission treat! I wished for more time with the Priest and Peggy—maybe just one more conversation? The music was spectacular! Among haunting notes of longing, there were threads of calypso, Stan Rogers, bawdy drinking songs. Some of the best moments were irreverently heartfelt soul-searching Catholic themes that have so long been a part of Sting’s songwriting which were brought to life by Father O’Brien played by Fred Applegate. If I could change one thing, I would ask for a line of dialogue in the first act that explains or sets up Gideon’s sudden change of heart. I hope to having the chance to see how the show between its Chicago closing and the Broadway stage! Side note about the Chicago Theatre--The patrons around us were enthusiastic theatre goers who welcomed us into lively discourse about the show! Thanks for the fun, guys!

    The last ship was suberb!!!

by boysma3 on 7/15/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

I decided to attend the show at the last minute by myself and was super hyped about going. My seat was less than spectacular but I didn't care because I was there to drink in the music that was ALL Sting. His talent and that of the cast permeated my every musical pore. I was swaying back and forth, trying to sing along and didn't want the show to end. Only one musical number seemed to lack the power of all the others...if she loved me, was not my favorite...a bit off. No worries thought because the cast, their voices and abilities were all that I had hoped for. I only wish I could see it in NYC.
