    Not a puzzlement!

by JPaulZ on 6/29/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

As someone who grew up with the Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr movie version, I was a little hesitant about seeing a stage version. My hesitation was unfounded. The casting, the staging, and the performances were wonderful. Rodgers and Hammerstein productions were meant to be seen live onstage. Do yourself a favor and buy tickets.

The King and I - Broadway in Chicago

by Snoopy73 on 6/29/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

This was an amazing production of The King and I. I had seen a production of The King and I when I lived in New York City and enjoyed it back then. The costumes and sets were amazing. It really captured the essence of the Classic American Musical experience. I loved the music and the story. I would highly recommend this production to anyone. Since there are only a few more days left here in Chicago, I would suggest to go see it before it leave on July 2. The King and I is a Must-See!

    Beautiful Show Ruined by Audience

by LexiRachel on 6/26/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The King and I is a beautiful show and this touring company did a terrific job making sure the material wasn't dated by making points on colonialism, and abuses of unchecked monarchy. Anna also seemed stronger in this direction of the show. Much of the set was very good, but I thought the palace would be more lavish, and some unnecessary props on stage somewhat diminished the big dance number "Shall We Dance." The cast was great, particularly Manna Nichols (Tuptim) and Joan Almedilla (Lady Thiang). The dancers in the ballet were fabulous. However, the theater staff allowed several people to come in late, and at different times repeatedly disrupting the first act, and there was a man behind me who was singing along, and talking through most of the show. The ushers did nothing.

The King and I...(sigh) - loved it!

by ValpoTheaterLovers on 6/26/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Wonderful performances by the whole cast-the scene changes were seamless as most of them happened in front of the curtain. Was so glad to share this classic with my daughters.

Could follow the story line especially well because of the open captioning. Performers, costumes, scenery were excellent.

    King and I shall dance!

Great production! A must see if you know the original. They are not Yul Brenner and Debra Kerr but they were great!

Leads are great-costumes and sets grand

by ShawnShawnShawn on 6/23/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Really strong cast, especially for a touring company. Only one soloist couldn't seem to hit the notes.

    Delightful!

by SBXmugcollector on 6/22/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I was very excited to see this show, as I always loved the movie as a child. I had high expectations going in, but the performance far surpassed what I imagined. The sets were lovely, the children were adorable, but the lead performers were fabulous. The King just made the whole show for me. Loved the humor. So happy that we went, even though I actually missed Father's Day with my husband!!

    Underwhelming Production

by Runs262 on 6/21/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Sadly, this production was lacking in set design. The opulence of Siam in the movie was not conveyed in the theatre. The King was also mis-cast. In the play, the King was short in stature and he had hair! Not anything like Yul Brenner in the original musical. The music was slow. In fact, I would call the entire production sleepy.

    Fantastic performance

by PhilH17 on 6/21/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

My wife LOVES "The King and I", and this performance was as good as any she had seen. The humor and lighter tone was welcome, and the voices were incredible.

    Splendid!

by VisitingGina on 6/21/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Looked for something special to do for our anniversary and this was it. I've always loved the musical and was a little afraid it wouldn't live up to the movie. But, it did that and more. The King was just great as well as others. The voices were terrific. It was long, but I'd never have known it. I was so caught up in the production it seemed to just fly. Well worth the price of the tickets!!
