About

East London via Southend-On-Sea band THE HORRORS have come along way since 2005, when they graced the cover of the NME with eye-linered eyes, big hari, an eff-you attitude and barely a single (the spiky ‘Shenna Is A Parasite') to their name. Their live shows were a riot- often literally- but did what rock n roll is supposed to do: energise, excite, divide and polarize. Three records on, they're all grown up and the hype has evolved into almost universal respect. Skying is a wide-ranging, shapeshifting album with an overarching pop sensibility (see: unklikely hit single ‘Still Life'). They headlined the Laneway- curated stage at London's Field Day in July and we guarantee that they're as thrilling as ever.

    The headliner over by 10pm?

by unhappyHorrorsFan on 4/20/12The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

Let's see, The Tickets, all ads, even the Marquee listed the Horrors as the headliner, Imagine my suprise to walk in one hour after the published start time to find them ending their short set, because at some point, It was decided that the Black Angels would headline. I can't tell you how unhappy i was.

The Horrors & a very bad psyche band

by ThomMMmmmmm on 4/20/12The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

We went for the Horrors, We are huge fans of theirs and have seen them numerous times including opening for Florence & the Machine in England recently which was not disappointing at all. We enjoyed the show minus: A. all the people who apparently go to big shows to talk about themselves the entire time and try to passive aggressively push you out of whatever spot you may have found for yourself.....while never shutting their uninteresting traps for a millisecond. B. The Black Angels went on after the Horrors and were awful (just my opinion as I have heard their brand of rambling psychedelia too many times and it bores me to tears). Not that big of a deal except there were no horrors encores. Bottom line?...The Horrors did their new album and it was excellent and we got to get back to Santa Barbara at a reasonable hour.....would have enjoyed some of our faves from the Horrors first and second albums....

The Horrors were AMAZING! I love this bands albums and seeing the live only made me love them more. The Horrors are my favorite new band. I think they should be as big as Radiohead soon.

Absolutely terrible! The sound was terrible and they couldn't have cared less about the audience or their music for that matter.

    The Horrors in BillyBurg Mix-up

by Superfox on 4/11/12Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

The one star is perhaps unfair. The truth is that I will never know how good or bad The Horrors were. The reason? The mixing was so utterly diabolical that I simply couldn't tell. There was a guy whose fingers kept zooming up and down the fretboard of his six-string; but what sound it produced, I couldn't tell. There was a guy fiddling around with a keyboard; but, except for occasional deafening salvoes of noise that sounded like an out-of-control Stylophone, I would be utterly at a loss if I was called upon to explain to a jury what he was doing. There was a bass, yes. And drums; yes, there were drums up the wazzoo! And a guy crooning -- though it mostly sounded as if he were singing through twenty sheets of White Cloud. So what did I hear? The Good Lord only knows. There were a few songs that I recognized at the start. But this gig managed to notch up a first for me in a concert-going career that now spans four decades -- the mixing actually got worse as the gig went on. And it's not as if The Music Hall of Williamsburg is a difficult venue -- it's not cavernous or echoey, and it fills up nicely with nice, warm, soft bodies. So, lads! The message is clear! Sack the losers on the mixing desk and, next time, I might be able to form a view on what your gig was like! (And, yes, I stood right next to the mixing desk.)

    Horrors

by showdude84 on 4/11/12Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Overall, the show was ok. I was more fascinated with the effects the band was using. I don't necessarily think the band is hiding behind the electronics but it's great to see Josh interact with all his pedals. I think they have a great sound. Reminiscent of 80's with a twist of early 90's shoegaze rock. They try to make noise which is cool but going to so many Sonic Youth shows, The Horrors attempt at noise just can't compare.

    The Horrors

by NavR on 10/6/11Webster Hall - New York

I was bored. Perhaps the sound system in Webster Hall was at fault??? I'm a huge fan, but I didn't feel the live show at all. I was hoping the vocals would pick up eventually...but it didn't. Just to compare...I would probably see them again - but not in Webster Hall.

Excellent! Band rocks out while playing w/ sound!

by Matt8 on 10/5/11Brighton Music Hall - Boston

Seeing a band of this level of musicianship, innovation, and stature in tiny club was an amazing treat. They are top notch musicians playing with passion and precision. There was a thick wall of sound, layer upon layers of textures, rhythms, and sampled sounds to make it a real sonic delight. I expect really big things from these guys - they are the real deal! The concert featured them playing mostly from their last two albums, both of which are excellent. Among the songs were Sea within a Sea (an absolutely gorgeous rocker with multiple tempo changes and climaxes) , I Can See Through You, Still Life (the single from the new album) and the highlight of the show - Moving Farther Away. This last one was just glorious - building and cresting, cresting and building, with lots of lovely sonic layers and surprises while also rocking at a very high level. The drums (Joe Spurgeon) and bass (Rhys Webb) really set a fabulous foundation, leaving the guitar (Joshua Hayward) to move in lots of different directions, while the keyboards(Tom Cowan) reference everything from 1960's era organ glissandos to 1980s pop to cutting edge sonic experiments. And the vocalist - Faris Badwan - may be the star of the show. He has a very haunting, and yet emotive voice that focuses it all into a powerful, sum is greater than its parts, experience. The tiny club limited them in some ways - not much of a light show or anything else. The sound was good for a small club, and the crowd was warm, but didn't seem like they were very familiar with the band. If you get a chance to see these guys, do it! Pretty soon they'll be selling out big stadiums.

The horrors, the Horrors, THE HORRORS!

by Driffidius on 9/18/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

This was my first time seeing them. The night started out with me meeting two of my oldest friends from high school for sushi and bento and then went to the the theater around 8. The show didn't actually start for an hour so we walked around Wilshire. At 9 we got in line to see the opening band. They sounded great and their presentation on the stage was a nice series of projected visuals on a scrim behind them. I did think they were kind of a strange paring opening for The Horrors (my friend texted me after a few minutes that the Stepkids should have been adopted and should leave the stage immediately!) After about 40 minutes opening band left the stage and the sound engineer for The Horrors stepped into the sound booth. We stood next to him the entitre time and could easily see the set list for The Horrors. (kinda cheating) At 10 PM sharp The Horrors took to the stage! They opened with, surprise- "Changing The Rain" and from then on they alternated between songs off Skying and their second album, Primary Colours. They ended with my favorite track off Skying, "Moving Further Away". I was a tiny bit disappointed that they didn't play anything off Strange House, but overall they were amazing. It was nice to see them live finally; Farris is a born frontman and the rest of the band all looked like they were having a blast up there! A perfect evening to be sure!
