About

The Guess Who are a Canadian rock band formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The band released eleven studio albums, all of which reached the charts in Canada and the United States. Their 1970 album American Woman reached no. 1 in Canada and no. 9 in the United States, while five other albums reached the top ten in Canada. The Guess Who charted fourteen Top 40 singles in the United States and more than thirty in Canada.

The band found their greatest success in the late 60s and early 70s, under the leadership of singer/keyboardist Burton Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman, with hit songs including "American Woman", "These Eyes", "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature", and "No Time". With Randy Bachman's exit in 1970, Kurt Winter joined the band and The Guess Who would go on to release the band's top selling album Share the Land. Songs such as "Hand Me Down World", "Hang On To Your Life", "Albert Flasher", "Clap for the Wolfman", "Runnin' Back to Saskatoon", "Star Baby", and "Glamour Boy" would follow.

The Guess Who officially broke up in 1975 with the exit of lead singer Burton Cummings. Cummings. Members of The Guess Who reunited a number of times over the years, with their last concert being in front of 450,000 at the Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto SARS benefit concert.

With Randy's powerful guitar work and Burton's distinct vocals and keyboard mastery, the duo continues to capture the spirit of what made The Guess Who a household name. They are more than just former bandmates -- they are ambassadors of Canadian rock, whose influence can be heard in countless acts that followed in their footsteps. Hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Guess Who were pioneers who dared to dream beyond their borders--and succeeded on a global stage.

  • Band great - venue weak

by Gasdad1 on 9/9/12Twin River Event Center - LincolnRating: 4 out of 5

Really enjoyed listening to the Guess Who & hearing some interesting facts & history about the group. They sounded awesome & put on a good show. I would not recommend Twin River Center for a concert though. the seating area was flat and thus hard to see the stage. The chairs were not too comfortable either.

we most definetly was duped into believing thant the backman brother and and cummings would be there.they did not sing all there songs and no way sounded like the guess who or bto. what a shame. did not sound or play instruments like the originals

  • The Guess Who...nothing to guess about!

by JukesLover on 9/9/12Twin River Event Center - LincolnRating: 5 out of 5

Hey, listen: I saw them when I was 14 years old & through my life, in diff lineups, as well as BTO & Randy solo, with Ringo, etc. It's simple: "It's All Good". Derek isn't a good front man: he's great. I was attending with folks who'd never seen TGW & they loved Derek. So...the 'brand' is in good hands with Derek out front. Shame Jim wasn't playing, but as usual, Gary lent the 'history hand" & of course, efficient, perfect drumming. Leonard; What can one say, he's been a great addition for years. Laurie & the fillin guy for Jim: perfect. Folks, there was not a dull moment, the audience participation was lovely and it was a solid, solid show.

  • Best concert evah!

by The0Wanderer on 7/3/12Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

I was looking forward to the concert with my 50 year-old dad and 20 year-old sister, but none of us really expected The Guess Who to be as amazing as they were. The concert was incredibly personal, the band was lively, and the music quality was really high. It was like listening to a CD of The Guess Who live! I really would say that this has been the best concert experience evah.

  • The Guess Who rocked!

One of the best shows I've ever been to! Heard all the classics as well as some songs i hadn't heard before.

  • Worst performance ever

by Haiggy on 7/2/12Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 1 out of 5

We were duped into thinking we would see the original Guess Who. What a rip off!! No Randy or Burt. Some new kid trying to sing the songs. This was nothing but a "head" banger concert. Don't display their pictures if they are not going to be there!! We left after 1 hour and as they were about to take a 30 min.break. We will be more careful about what we are buying tickets to. Melody Tent was deceitful on this one. Shame on them. Everyone was complaining and I'm sure there will be more backlash on this one!!!

  • Great show!

Was a fun trip down nostalgia lane! The band played all their great songs with a lot of energy and musicianship. Was really neat to see these guys belting out their tunes after 50 years!

  • Unexpectedly great show!

    by Stu56 on 8/4/11Deschutes County Expo - RedmondRating: 5 out of 5

Great show! I was more than a little concerned that without Burton Cummings that it would flail around a bit. Derek Sharp did a phenomenal job as the front man. He doesn't quite have the deep baritone growl that Cummings was able to affect, but he made up for it in his range, and showmanship. Derek made a connection with the audience that really brought the energy up and engaged them to like I've seen few front men do. They all really seemed to enjoy being up there! Much more relaxed than the original Guess Who shows I remember from the 70s and 80s. Jim Kale at bass and Gary Peterson on drums (the original two left) seemed to be doing more than earning a paycheck, and it was obvious that through the years they still enjoy playing before an appreciative crowd. Laurie Mackenzie was great on lead guitar with Derek backing him up and trading riffs on some songs. Leonard Shaw on keys, flute, sax, shaker and vocals, was a likewise amazing addition and really helped the band to shine. I would go as far to say that the overall musicianship was of a quality higher than the original Guess Who. Burton hates the thought of this band out there traveling around and being quite successful at it. I think mainly he hates them being successful. I really wish Burton would have been there playing and singing, but life moves on. He could have been there if he wanted to be. It's a bit of sour grapes for him. He is still getting royalty and probably contract money when this band plays, and when the band helps promote and sell, The Guess Who music on iTunes. Their sound man (Howard) did a great job at FOH, the mix was in stereo, and the line arrays did a very good job of covering the venue. I was very close to the stage, and didn't feel like I was being passed over by the sound. I couldn't tell if the Nexo cabinets in front of the stage were front fills, possibly so. and if they were it was an appropriate enough fill. Side note; Kale and Peterson were using standard monitors, Mackenzie a mix, the rest of the band was using in-ear monitors which was a statement more on how some stick with what they are comfortable with and the others move into the future. In-ear monitors not only are more accurate for the band but reduce stage noise bleeding into the house, which is what makes for a very clean mix and vocals that were spot on. The lighting rig, were all PAR 64s and some panels to flash the house. So that part of the show was definitely from the 70s. The lighting tech seemed a one-off, not really knowing the songs that well, which would have helped a wee bit. Not a wiggly light, mover, or IL, to be seen anywhere. Still not a distraction at all. People of all ages were really enjoying this show, singing along, and were very appreciative of this iconic band. Great job guys! I'd see this band again in a heartbeat!

  • Guess Who

    by Jack61 on 7/18/11The Meadows Racetrack & Casino - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

If u are a guess who fan.. by now u know many of the original guys like Bachmann left the group years ago.. this was a group that sounded like a cover band even though there were 2 members who were the original driving force.. ... the band sounds ok but not like the original group. That said , the guys put on a great show lead singer and keyboarder were very entertaining. .

  • AMAZING!!!

by Phoenix on 7/17/11The Meadows Racetrack & Casino - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best concerts I've been to this summer. Even though only two original band members were present, Jim Kale (bass) and Garry Peterson (drums), the sound is still like it was back then. The new lead singer, Derek Sharp (who also plays guitar and keyboard), sounded so dead on it was unbelievable and Leonard Shaw (keyboard, flute, saxophone, and tambourine/shaker) was truly a Jack of all trades!!! They were so nice to the crowd that by the end of the show it felt like you've known them your whole life. The best part was that they stayed after the show and signed autographs!!! Almost nobody does that anymore...it was a first for me! Overall, amazing show and I will definitely see them any chance I get!!!

Too loud and too much just LOUD guitar music. They were not what I remembered. I did like the songs they did that they had recorded.

  • The Guess Who Rock!

    by Bobster1 on 7/12/11The Meadows Racetrack & Casino - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The Guess Who concert far exceeded expectations! Four of us, fans since the early 70's all thought the former band members still rock -- and the new additions have only made them better. I purchased the CD and have been listening to it every day driving back & forth to work. When I get to work, I feel happy - and when I get home, I feel happy. That's the effect of their great music. From a musical family myself, I can attest that they have both great musical and singing talent. Can't wait to see them again!

  • Sould be called, The Guess Who Tribute Band

by Bluejayflyer on 7/12/11The Meadows Racetrack & Casino - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

It was a good concert but misleading, with- out Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman, it was disappointing.

  • No Guessing who!

by Pigeye on 7/12/11The Meadows Racetrack & Casino - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The Guess Who sounded much like themselves despite only 2 originals. Let me pose a question though. Is it a law that says that every concert starts 15-30 minutes late? It was hot in that son fellows! What was the delay. If I have to be at work at 8PM; I start work at 8PM. The concert was enjoyable and the lead singer terrific. There was however too much guitar "Jamming" and many songs were extended too long. The apparent newly recorded songs did nothing for me nor the crowd. It was the oldest crowd of people that I have ever joined at a concert anywhere, Perhaps because it was at a casino ; the younger crowd was not legally welcome. The older folks came to hear the hits. I doubt that any of them will be downloading the new songs on their Ipods as the group seemed to encourage. Many in all likelihood may not know what an ITUNE is. It was hot in the stands, the group started late and there was the frequent "wiff" of horses from the distance. I guess that is to be expected however at a racetrack. In general the concert was good but could have better without the intervening variables as mentioned.

  • Awesome time

Brought back all of our past memories, loved all the old songs and the new ones were great.

  • You didn't have to "Guess Who"

    by Rustym38a1 on 7/12/11The Meadows Racetrack & Casino - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

If you closed your eyes you would have thought you were back in the 70's listening to a younger band. They didn't miss a note. The songs sounded as good as the original recordings. Derek Sharp does a great job as lead singer.
