    Porgy & Bess

Excellent production! The only thing missing was the goat cart, which seems to belong to the very last scene as Porgy starts out for New York.

Audra McDonald, Norm Lewis and the rest of the remarkable cast delivered a performance that was beautiful and moving. They did justice to an American classic. I would urge anyone to go and see this soon.

    Ah loves you, Porgy!

by SRFrancie on 5/4/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

This performance was remarkable. I have loved this music since I was in middle school - that would be for about 50 years. I had never seen the musical before nor did I know the story, and was very deeply moved by how pertinent the theme still is, and the emotion of the story and performances. All singers/actors were spectacular. Audra McDonald and rest of the cast have mostly impeccable voices and timing. I heard that A McD often does not show for performances but she had been nominated for a Toni that day so fortunately she showed up! A diva is a diva. My husband said he was disappointed that it was "so operatic," and I do have to agree that some of the female vocalists had too much tremor/vibrato (when this trend began, I cannot surmise, but what a detriment to really good vocal work) so that the words were not understandable at all. But the acting and choreography were also excellent and I was totally caught up in the story. Combined with the timeless melodies, I would call this a don't-miss event.

This was probably a great play, but I could not identify with the characters, felt it didn't build up properly. Also the style of singing was difficult to understand for me.

    Porgy and Bess

by TheaterLover95 on 5/3/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

This show was absolutely incredible. The voices in this cast are powerful and everyone contributed to the overall picture. A must see. However, sometimes it was difficult to understand what the cast members were saying, I think that was more a sound issue than a seating issue.

    tremendous

by Brez000 on 5/2/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

Great songs, great voices, powerful drama and Ms. Audra McD. Very beautifully presented, walking the fine line between operatic and theatrical, jazz and gospel tinged, everything you could want from a performance.

I loved Audra MacDonald, but was very disappointed in the up-dated version of the show. Porgy and Bess is a classic. Why mess with it??

    Porgy and Bess was extraordinary

by friarmichael on 4/26/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

one of our favorite scores over the last 50 nyears, Porgy and Bess was performed by a troupe of the most talented actors. great dancing, voices, acting, emotion took my breath away. Audra McDonald is truly a treasure and I hope she never tires of the stage. Herr voice and the emotion she brings to the roll are beautiful to behold. Norm Lewis gave a heart wrenching portrayal as Porgy. David Alan Grier made Sporting Life his own, a tall order given the legends who performed his numbers over the last 70 years. Phillip Boykin, Nikki Renee Daniels and Joshua Henry bring their talent and energy and I am out of superlatives with which to do justice to their performances.
