About The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway

The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway sits across a highway from Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, right next to the Morrison Motor Car Museum (for those who love all things cars) and just a 20-minute drive northeast of sparkling downtown Charlotte. Like the speedway itself, The Dirt Track is referred to as America's Home for Racing. The clay oval track covers four-tenths of a mile and can seat close to 14,000 (usually highly enthusiastic) fans at capacity.

The Dirt Track proudly hosts a variety of rowdy events that thrill entertainment-seekers who like things loud, adrenaline-filled, and (of course) dirty. Notably, The Dirt Track hosts the Can-Am World Finals, a once-a-year championship event for World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars, World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Models and Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds. The Dirt Track has also brought Monster Trucks and motorcycling stars from AMA Pro Flat Track to North Carolina with a championship Monster Truck spectacular gracing the track annually.

Lug Nut — with a shiny silver head shaped like, you guessed it, a lug nut and a suit of glimmering blue spandex — is the mascot for Charlotte Motor Speedway as well as The Dirt Track.

History of The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway

To the excitement of many of its regular attendees, Charlotte Motor Speedway announced it was building a complementary dirt track in 1999, and The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway was completed in May of the following year.

Auto-racing promoter H.A. Wheeler, who previously served as the president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, collaborated with late promoter Earl Baltes on the track's design. Baltes was named the grand marshal for The Dirt Track's inaugural event. Greg Walter was promoted to executive vice president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway in October 2018 and oversees operations at The Dirt Track.

    Fun and could be better

by Monster truck mom on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

This was our first Monster Truck show and we loved it and would return another year but here are a few improvements: The directions weren’t clear that the event was at the Dirt Track and not the Speedway. The speaker in front of our seating area was cutting out and we couldn’t hear. The track needs more lighting. The middle was dark and it was hard to see. Food vendors in the stadium would have been great so I didn’t have to miss the show. My husband waited in line for 30 minutes for dinner. It seemed all the vendors were slow.

    Room for improvement

by Gma55 on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

There was too much lag time between events. The food vendors ran out of food early, and the lines were too long. However, my grandchildren loved the bouncy houses. That’s where they spent most of their time. They are 8 and 6.

    Fun

by Steve on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

I think overall the kids had a great time. I am not sure why we delayed the start though. That only meant that we all got that much wetter and we had to leave because our kid was falling asleep before it was over. I was also a little disappointed at the souvenirs, only one tent had trucks and the lines were ridiculous. Next time you will want more trucks for the kids to play with while they are waiting for the next event and more tents for souvenirs. Overall good show but poor execution.

    Limited Show

by JS on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

I have been to this event in past years and truly enjoyed it but this year we were let down. I understand it rained which delayed the event but they shouldn’t have cut out parts. People paid money to come see a full show. The racing was cut to a short side by side race instead of utilizing the whole course. They also cut out all the extracurricular events that usually go on in between the main events.

    Awesome time. Loud and exciting!

by Gayle on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

Even in the rain, the monster trucks were amazing. Saw some great flips and tricks. Definitely a fun night out!

    Soso

by LK on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

I understand the weather was an issue but the communication and updates from the track were horrible. Once the event finally got started, it was good. I feel like the event was maybe cut a little short though.

    Shorter than Anticipated

by JT on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

Although it was fun to watch the program, overall it was much shorter than I had anticipated. Twelve trucks ? doing jumps for maybe 3 minutes each at best? Started with one on one races that lasted 15 seconds? Slow to line up, the kids were questioning, “is it over” multiple times. Probably won’t be going again.

Not as good as years past

by Monster Truck Mom on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

Just like 2019 we had storms in the area which is out of the events control. This just means the gates can not open as early but if you have purchase a ride along it means it eats into your show time. In 2019 we watch the show until the did last call for the ride along, the line was so long we didn’t want to miss the show. This year when we entered the line was considerably shorter so we got in thinking it would take no time but we were wrong because people were holding spots and more and more people would get in front of us. They were bypassing the check in location and coming around the back to get in line. By the time we got our ride and started to walk the stairs to our seats the show was over. My children were so disappointed and so was I become I had spend almost 300 dollars to not see a minute of the show. I would also argue that the show was shorter then years past!

    Horrible wait time

by KMiller on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

The line to get into the racetrack was utter ridiculous. It should be a better system in place. We stood in line for an hour in the rain just to get in and we didn’t have any bags to check and we preordered our tickets! And then once we got in we had to stand in line for 2.5 hours to do the ride a long. One of the staff told me that they had 1400 preorder ride alongs. There should have been a cap or a first come first serve for the ride a long. I have to paid $30 while in line for the ride along for myself because my some was under 10 years old and couldn’t ride by himself(which while purchasing the tickets I wasn’t informed about the age limit). We missed most of the show from being in line. Overall it was an horrible experience and they was my first purchase with ticketmaster.

One of the best experience I’ve had

by Henryblackwell on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

This event was 10x better than any monster jam event I’ve been to in the area only downside was the mic would keep cutting in and out near the turn 4 side of the track but I would 100% recommended the monster truck bash to anyone

    Rough

by Compton on 8/17/21Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

There was weather delays and that’s fine. However there were only a few trucks competing and several of them went out before the events started for mechanical issues. The guest service folks kept giving conflicting information on umbrellas in the track and grandstands. No one inside took cash as payment. The track PA system was constantly faulting so often we couldn’t hear the announcements and the sports caster. The show itself was okay, but I probably won’t be going again.

I paid how much for this?!

by Tawnieeee on 8/11/15Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

I spent almost $100 for THREE TICKETS. THREE. One child, two adults. The email claimed tickets were $25/adult and $10/child. In reality, they were $35.50/adult and $12.50/child. Monster truck ride tickets were $10 a piece and the ride itself lasts not even a minute and a half. In 2014, the show itself was great. I'm not a monster truck person at all and I enjoyed it. However this year, not so much. It seemed this year was all filler -- did I really pay that much to see a bunch of people do the Hokey Pokey? With EVERY BODY PART?! The majority of the show was making people dance for "talent scouts...." yeah right! The other filler was a very redundant motorbike skit where the two riders did the same the tricks over and over and over and over and over. Then they brought them out again for another 20 minute repeat. The "half-time" special was a very poor, cheap version of what you see at Monster Jam. The finale did not meet expectations of the build-up. The show itself? The monster trucks were mediocre this year. The free-style is usually the best part (the rest is "qualifying and racing") but this year was not as exciting and energetic. Maybe I was holding high expectations? In 2014, there was a lot of destruction and wrecking, flipping on their sides and trucks falling apart. This year was no destruction or crazy stunts. It wasn't worth almost $100 nor the hour and a half ride this year. My son - who is a monster truck enthusiast - wasn't even impressed in the least bit. Next time, we'll stick to Monster Jam.

Circle K Back to school Bash sucked! !!!!!!

by Anonymous on 8/11/15Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

My son and I go to as many Monster Jam events as we can, both indoor and out. This one by far was the worst. The trucks sucked, the Freestyle was horrible, seen better in some indoor events. The Motor Speedway had issues. .. just not a good event all around.

Circle K back to school dust bowl

by Ducatirider1098 on 8/11/15Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

Expected to see trucks doing back flips and the crazy obstacle like you see on T.V. because of the size of the track, this didn't happen. They raced around in a circle with just two big jumps . The dust wash terrible , you couldn't even see the trucks sometimes. I was red when I left. And the speakers were so loud I needed ear plugs for them not the trucks! I will never go back and don't recommend this to anyone.
